i really dont want to sound dumb but im a second time mum i breastfed both my babies for first week and then on to formula! with my dd1 i used to pre make feeds every morning but with my new daughter i want to make fresh every feed! ive bought a milk powder dispenser for when im out but not sure how to do this lol. i know i can put fresh boiled water in the sterilised bottles but how long will the water last? wat if it goes cold? if i goes cold do i need to re sterilise bottles and put fresh boiled water? a bit of advice would be really appricated, thanks xxx

If baby will take the milk at room temperature that is brill because you can fill your bottles & store them in the change bag...alternatively buy a flask and fill it with the boiled water, sterilised bottles in change bag & take powder in your dispensers. The water will be fine for a good 8 hours if not longer! x

I make each feed fresh when needed too.

Having freshly boiled water to add powder to while out is difficult unless at we are at someones house so we just take a couple of cartons and a couple of sterilised bottles.

Water in sterilised bottle will be fine for up to 24hrs - the bottle too if you decided to just empty the bottle and put newly boiled water in.

Hope that helps:winkwink:

It's recommended that you make the formula with near boiling water, because that way it's sterilised. But TBH with the best will in the world, many mums end up making it other ways out of ease.

You can take pre boiled water in bottles, allow them to cool and add the formula when you need it, but when you add the formula, you should only keep it for a further 2 hours.

You can take boiling water in a thermos flask, and dispense into the bottles when needed, but you need to plan ahead with this because it will need time to cool down before the feed.

You can take formula already made up, but as stated, you shouldn't keep it for more thna 2 hours.

You can buy the ready-made formula packs from the shops and open and pour into the bottle when you need it.

If your LO is happy having milk at room temperature, then you can do what you prefer, but some babies are fussy, so you would either need to use a thermos or heat it up when you need it. I don't know for sure, but I think boiled water gone cold is fine for up to 24 hours or so.

Yes they do, I've got one! I also use a similar set of dispensers.
Evie is one of those fussy babies that hates her milk at room temp! Believe me, I've tried getting her to have it cooler but she wont drink it! And besides, it seems to make her sickier afterwards, so it ALWAYS has to be warm, so this flask is a godsend when I'm out and about

oh thank you for the advise, i will deffo get one of the flasks when i get some money! so i have been using serilised bottles and then adding my powder from avent dispenser! which is fab she loves it when its freshly mixed she eats so much better then re heated milk, just to check even when the water is at room temp its ok to mix the powder with? sorry im so thick just want to double tripple check as i dont want to harm her. xxxxx thanks ladies

When I sterilise Erin's bottles, I fill them 2 thirds full with freshly boiled water, and leave them on the side to cool down. If we're at home and she needs a feed, I then just top up to the right ammount with fresh boiling water, and add the formula. This way the powder is going into hot water to sterilise it, but not so boiling it's too hot for her to drink, and so there's no waiting around for a bottle to warm back up.
When we're out we do exactly the same, but with a flask of boiling water. We use the Tommee Tippee flask, and I would recommend this, as even when we've been out all day, when I empty the remaining water from the flask it's still too hot to put your finger in!
Hope this helps:thumbup:

I do exactly the same with my 4month old LO's feeds.
Last thing at night I make up 6 bottles with water so they last through the night feed and into the next day so whenever he needs a feed i can just top up with boiling water. My HV advised that this was perfectly fine to do. I'm also going on holiday next week and luckily my LO doesn't mind his milk at room temp, so i can just take the bottles I need for the airport and the flight and take a powder dispenser for when i need the feeds. My HV also advised that its ok to make the bottles up with room temp water, you don't need to have it hot! To be honest, although I am very cautious with sterilizing and making up the bottles, I do think alot of the advice surrounding formula is scare tactics to make people breast feed rather than bottle feed - but the fact is breastfeeding simply isn't for everyone, and if I ever have another baby, there's no way i'm going to feel guilty for only BFing for a few weeks like i did with LO No1!

Ooops sorry, went off on one then, lol!!

Laura xx:blush:

brilliant thanks every1 i am using room tenp boiled water and topping up with fresh boiled! ur so all so smart thanks alot xx

I either go with a carton of premade, or if I know it will be used roughly in 2 hours I take a freshly made one with me. A thermos is handy if you know you can't access warm water for heating up.

I also use a formula dispenser. I put water in the bottles and mix as needed. LO has taken her feeds at room temperature since I quit BF. She also took her EBM at room temp as well.
