I really liked the name Maia... but thought it was pronounced 'May-ah/uh'. I have since been informed it is meant to be pronounced 'Mia'... which I do not like at all. :nope:

Is it silly to really like the name still even though I would want it pronounced differently?? I once knew a girl called Cuillin who pronounced her name 'Ku-lan' even though that is not how it is normally said so I know these things do happen but I was just wondering what you lovely ladies opinions were??

Also, can you roll names with the same first letter? Or does that sound 'weird' too? As in Maia Megan Rose... then surname??

Or, if you ladies have the time, how would you order the following names: Persephone, Maia, Megan, Rose, Pandora... in either 2 or 3.

I am getting in quite a pickle now and sorry if this has been quite confusing. ](*,)

Pronounce it how you like hun. I would pronounce it either May-uh or My-uh personally... I would not say it said Mia though...

XxX

I would pronounce it as My-Yah. I think that it is a lovely name :flower:

Really pretty and quite common name in sweden. It's pronouncedand "May-ah" and I would think most english people would say it like that as well :)

I was thinking of Maia as a middle name and DEFINITELY pronouncing it "MY-ah" not "ME-ah." I think it is almost impossible to make Maia into Mia (which is a real name too, like Mia Farrow). Any name I pick has to also work in Italian and MY-ah would also be the Italian or "traditional" pronunciation of the Roman goddesses name. Rhymes with Gaia too. Not GHEE-a. Whoever misinformed, ignore them, as long as it isn't your husband!

I pronounce it the correct way :-D My-ah! It's dds middle name! I get so many comPliments on it n just correct people if they wrong haha x

I have a few friends whose daughters are named Maia, and they pronounce it and "Maya" like My-uh. Very pretty name!

I may be biased though, as my favorite poet is Maya Angelou, who wrote "Phenomenal Woman".

My step sister is called Maia and its pronounced May-a or May-ah

I prefer Maia pronounced as "May-ah" and Mia pronounced "me-yah"

I would say may-uh hunnie

OT but where near bath do u live? I live in Frome :) xx

My-ah! Maia is also on my list! thats how we would pronounced it in finland so thats why its on my list as it would sound same in english and finnish but now i have second thought when i read how ppl would pronounce it lol but defo not me-ah!!

I think Maia's a lovely name (a family member has a little girl with the name). I would always pronounce it My-ah! If I wanted the child to be called Mia I'd call her Mia!!

btw I think Maia Megan Rose is lovely xx

when looking at that name i first said - may-ah. dont think many people would read it as mia so wouldnt worry about that x

I would have pronounced it "my-ah" BUT love it pronounced "may-ah"
GL!

Thank you ladies, am much relieved to find it is pronounced both ways. Hehe!!! WOOO!!!:hugs:

I do believe that it's typically pronounced 'My-ah' I'm sure you could pronounce it May-ah and it'll be fine too. I would never ever pronounce it Mee-a though, not in a million years.

Mai is pronounced May
Maia is pronounced May-ah

This definitely!
When I was a teacher, I had various children in my class called Mia, and Maia and they were pronounced completely differently.
Mia = My-a or Mee-a
Maia = May-ah

This was initially on our list, due to the pronunciation.

I love Maia too, it's on my (very long) list :) It's Latin, and is def pronounced My-ah/May-ah - think she was a mother goddess type in ancient Rome - and the month of May is named after her. Maybe the Greek version is pronounced Mee-ah but im going Roman all the way! :)
