Hello,

I am not considered LTTC yet but I want some advice of handling HSG..
I had one before we started IUI two and half years ago.. and I have to say it was awful for me.. DR seems to think both my tubes were blocked but the force of the dye opened on tube.. it was close to the worst pain I have ever felt.
Now that we have been TTC # 2 for 10 months now I am considering returning to my DR again but I know the first thing he will order is a HSG.
Is there any way I can lessen my fear or at least numb the pain better this time ??

I have my HSG script and haven't gone yet so I'm interested in advice too. Did you take anything before the first one? Do you think your first HSG helped you get pregnant?

Mine was also the most horrific pain I have ever felt. They weren't able to complete it - she said my cervix was closed. If I end up needing to do it again I will be sure they do it on the correct days (mine was day 1 of my cycle), will take some type of medication before the test and will have a full bladder. A few of my IUIs have been painful but with a full bladder it is better. I believe it straightens out the cervix.

Good luck to you

Ask the dr to prescribe you something to take prior to the procedure. Either Ativan or Valium would be good for the anxiety of it and maybe something stronger for pain like Vicodin or Percocet? Most dr. will prescribe something if you're that scared and since you have a history of having such a bad experience prior. Just explain the situation to him, and I'm sure any caring dr would give you something. I was given Valium and took 800mg of motrin prior to mine, while it wasn't pleasant, it wasn't as bad as I thought. Good luck!

I am not sure if the HSG helped me get pregnant or not.. I am pretty sure it did since I think both my tubes were blocked.. but I didn't conceive on my own or right away after the HSG..
I had IUI with clomid & pregeon six months after the HSG.
All I took before the HSG was Advile..like the dr told me too..
It was brutal for me and the nurse had to hold me down to keep me still.. but I didn't find the IUI that bad.. I cramped the same afterwards but the actual procidure wasn't too painful..
I have called to make an appointment to "talk" to my DR about it.. if he says he won't give me something to ease it for me..I am going to go to another DR..
I can't willing go through that again..

Sorry that your HSG was so painful and the anxiety was so bad.. I actually had 2 HSG's. I didn't feel like they were that bad but everyone handles it differently. I will say that tensing up because you're so nervous is probably one of the worst things you can do. For my 1st one I was so nervous that I was shaking. I was really tense. For the second one I had the Dr perscribe pain meds which didn't really help but I think i was able to relax more and not tense up which really helped.

After 4 years NTNP and a year and a half TTC, I am booked in for a HSG on the 16th aug... I'm a strong believer of positive thinking, and have the frame of mind that, it may hurt, but ill be closer to knowing what the hec is wrong with my lady parts and maybe closer to the BFP! Iv suffered bacterial vaginosis ever since an abortion when I was 17, and I am almost certain BV has blocked my tubes, as all other tests I have had, bloods, untrasound etc have been normal! Good luck :-) xxxxxx

Oh good luck rachel with your HSG.. I hope everything in clear for you (((HUGS)))

Thanks for your kind words futurenuman.... I am extremely scared that something as simple as bacterial vaginosis may have ruined my tubes and will prevent me from being a mother! But I have to stay positive until I know my results :-S harder said than done! I will keep you informed! Xxxxxxx

I just got home from mine. I took 2 over the counter aleve about 2 hours before and it did hurt but was nowhere near as bad as my period this month. (which left me vomiting and having cold sweats on the bathroom floor) I was terrified throughout and it was crampy and sharp pain but it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected - it was hard to lay still though because when I have period cramps I'm always moving around & stretching or rubbing to try and get comfortable.

So I would say -even though they didn't tell me to take anything take whatever works for your worst cramps before you go and it will be okay.

Take 3x motering ibuprofen 200mg an hour- 1.5 hrs before. I had my Sono done sem but they put saline into your uterus instead of dye. I didn't even feel them touching the cervix, it was like it was numb. I am booked for a HSG next week and will do the same for that. :) I was so shocked that I felt next to nothing. And I had the balloon too

Mazzie, couldn't they have a look at the tubes while they were saline through your uterus ???
I have never heard of that before and I was never asked to do it !!
I went to my DR last Friday and discussed my options since we have now been "trying" for 10 months..
He never mentioned the HSG but suggested I try one month of 50 mg of clomid plus temping and if that didn't work we would try another month of 100mg of clomid and temping.
If that still didn't work.. off to IUI we go..
I'm not sure we can afford to do the IUI again since I didn't return to work ( and it was my coverage that afforded us the opt. to do IUI to have Emily)

I agree with what the others are saying. Take plenty of ibuprofen ahead of time, and ativan or xanax would be good too to help you relax. Mine was pretty painful but not unmanageable. We got pregnant the same cycle of our HSG last year, but unfortunately it was not viable. HSGs do help to clear the path so to speak! Good luck and :dust: to all of you.

I've heard varying reviews as to how painful people think HSG is, but personally mine was excruciating. I took 800mg ibuprofen prior to the test as I was directed, and I have to say I've never felt worse pain. People also say that the pain is dependent upon who administers the test, some people have had multiple HSG's and one was very painful, another just uncomfortable. Sorry I don't have any advice for you, but maybe your doctor would be willing to prescribe something for pain for you. It's worth asking!

I just had my hsg this morning. I took 2 aleve an hour before the procedure, but I don't think it helped much. I will admitt that it was quite painfull, but the pain was only for about a min or two. My ob and a radiologist were in the room with me. I was able to see the whole thing on the monitor screen. My right tube was completely blocked, which may explain why it hurt so bad. Really wasn't expecting this kinda result.....but i am ready to pick myself back up and move on to the next step. Followup appt this friday with ob/gyn.

RD, I also have only one tube and it shouldn't really hinder you fertility too much but I understand how your feeling right now (((HUGS)))

Just wanted to say.....the hsg was well worth the pain. Found out I am pregnant today! :happydance:
