Hi,
I had this test recently. In the weeks leading up to it I googled it and read lots of scary stories about. Women saying they were in agony, experiencing excruciating pain etc etc. As a result I was absolutely terrified when I went to have it done. I took 2x Ibruprofen and 2x Paracetamol about an hour before the test and I can honestly say I felt no pain what so ever. It was much much easier than a smear test. I wanted to post this because I think people often only write things online when something is wrong or a procedure doesn't go well.

So please please don't assume it will be really painful just because of what someone has posted online.

Same here - took 2x paracetamol an hour before and it was fine. Worst part was the speculum (but that always hurts me so not related to the test!!). Glad it was ok for you too.

Thanks so much for this girls. I have my HSG tomorrow so it's very reassuring to read your posts. All I've been doing is Googling and working myself into a frenzy.
Hopefully I can report back with a post similar to yours xxxx

Don't worry Spockette...just remember people are much more likely to post about a bad experience than a good one! Good luck...and take a couple of painkillers an hour before - more for peace of mind and to help calm nerves than anything else!! xxx

Mrs.B, Im the same too.. The only part for me that hurt a littlewas when they inserted the speculum in but thats like always because Im a chicken and get nervous therefore the muscle gets tensed but as for the actual HSG process was finee

I had my HSG done last October and I too read all the terrifying stories. I was pale as a ghost when I arrived to my appointment! The worst part for me was waiting while they got everything set up. The procedure itself was fine. I didn't experience any cramping or pain. Plus it was over in about 5 minutes. I wish I had never read all those stories and got myself so worked up.

Great idea about posting this!!!

Thanks girls. My appointment got cancelled. I got the call this morning and was told the consultant wasn't in. I am gutted. I worked myself up into a frenzy, then psyched myself up, got into the right frame of mind and BANG! Cancelled! :nope:

Oh well. Have to wait until next month......

Thanks for sharing this ! I also have read and done alot of research about it . I am still terrified tho I am allergic to a few things so I plan on taking some benadryl before and Ib and tylenol. Mine is on Monday

Sorry it got cancelled Spockette - might be worth ringing each morning to see if there are any cancellations - I managed to squeeze in because of a cancellation at very little notice.

Good luck for Monday Ruskie - good idea taking benadryl if you have a few allergies.

Thanks hon. Think I may have to wait until next month as I'm very near ovulation at the moment so everything is so sensitive in there :haha:

I had a hsg in january. I was ready for it to hurt a lot but it was ok. The only discomfort for me was some cramping during the test but i did have one blocked tube so that is probably why as the tube was in spasm. I got a bfp that same cycle! Unfortunately i lost my baby girl at 14 weeks to a chromosome disorder.

Xxx

MrsBroodyP - Im sorry to hear your the loss of your baby, I hope you get pregnant soon with a healthy baby! x

My HSG felt ok at first (mild cramping, but bearable) and then the radiographer thought open of my tubes was blocked, so she used a (different?) catheter and then the cramping got pretty strong. It was over quickly, though.

I actually forgot to take my paracetamol and ibruprofen, so maybe that's why the cramps were so strong!

My HSG was fine too. It felt a lot like a pap smear. One tube is clear, the other "might be" closed, but they can't tell for sure... so, who knows.

I did take some naproxin before the test and an anti-anxiety med. It wasn't nearly as bad as the internet would have me believe.
