Im supposed to have an HSG on the 11th of Aug, please tell me of your experience and if there's anything I can take to minimize the pain....

My experience of a HSG wasnt as bad as i expected. I took some painkillers about an hour before.
I was so nervous before it, but it was fine. I had a lovely nurse who chatted to me while it was being done, and i think that helped me relax. I didnt find it painfull at all.
After it was done the doctor who performed it showed me the screen and explained his findings.
Afterwards i had a few mild cramps, but they went within a few hours.
Good luck, hope it goes well for you.

Thanks Jennie, Im so bad with pain and have a really low pain threshold (i have to mentally prepare myself to have blood drawn), and I have read about people having really bad experiences during HSG so am getting really scared, i have also read that you become really fertile after the HSG, is this true?

You will be fine, and you will have answers. Im not good with pain either, i was expecting it to really hurt so was relieved when it was over and hadnt been as bad as id expected.
I had mine done, and i never got af that month and finally had my bfp.

Im having a HSG scan in october bit nervous too!!
Will they be able to tell u there if your results are good?? Are you looking for the dye to flow out which means your tubes are not blocked??
xx

I had this test recently. It was fine, try not to worry. It wasn't painful, rather it was uncomfortable. I took ibuprofen beforehand. I had lifght spotting straight after but nothing else. I had a verbal report of the findings (no blockages - phew) but the detailed report will go to my consultant.

Try not to worry in my experience it was no different than a smear test. Plus you can look at your insides on the screen which is a good distraction from the procedure!

I had the test done as well, just make sure to take some pain killers 1 hour prior to your test, my doctor herself preformed my test and she told me on the spot what she was doing and if there was a problem, luckily my tubes were clear....but yeah you have a bit of cramping after and some may get a bit of spotting, but all in all it was nothing, I thought it was gonna be WAY worse then it was....

Good luck and I hope it goes well!

So are you more fertile after the HSG? xx

Can you get referred for one by your GP or does it have to be by a FS?
Thanks

I have heard something about beinf more fertile after HSG but I'm not sure this is anything other than anecdotal evidence.

I was referred for this test by a consultant. But I had an internal ultrasound first which was ordred by my GP. It probably depends on the GP - I would much rather have a specialist review the results of this kind of specialised test.

I got referred for an ultrasound from gyno and also the HSG is referred by the gyno.. Just heard alot of people say they seem to get BFP not long after a HSG scan!
x

I have heard that you can be more fertile after the HSG because youtr tubes are getting cleaned out!

Hey hun, thought i would share my post from my journal when i went for my HSG testing..lol..I was super scared and didn't know what to expect!!! But here it is!!!

I had one done too just a week ago and I was recommended to take 2 extra strength advil (ibprofen) one hour before. It wasn't terrible pain but a brief moment of intense cramps. One thing I had read online before I went was to take a pad to wear after cause of leaking after........I didn't have much but I recommend it.

Best wishes.

I agree that I also had intense cramps for a moment, but it wasn't as bad as I envisioned. The test is relatively quick. They showed me the monitor and could tell if my tubes were clear immediately after the dye was inserted. My Dr. said that some people are more fertile after the test, but it unfortunately didn't help me. I spotted for a few days afterwards, so don't be alarmed if the same happens to you. Good luck. xx

Hey honey

I had a HSG about 8 days ago, I'm the worlds biggest wimp, I have to take DF with me just to get blood taken :haha:

I took 2x500mg Paracetamol and 2x500mg of Ibuprofen about 45 mins before I went, generally it was ok, not comfortable but not that bad.
Mostly it was like a smear
The worst pain for me was when he had to re-site the catheter and re-inflate the balloon (it moved the 1st time he tried to remove the speculum) it was a sharp crampy pain that did die off after a minute or so.

TBH as soon as they insert the dye and you can see it on the screen it takes your attention and you kinda forget the pain as you watch the tubes light up!!

I didn't have any really bad cramps afterwards, nothing worse than mild period pains, nothing choc ice-cream couldn't cure!
The dye did keep coming out for about 3h and it did make me bleed a little, but again, nothing to bad and nothing they hadn't warned me about.

Good luck honey, you really will be fine

Thanks Farrie, thanks everyone, I really appreciate, will make sure I take some painkillers before I go. My gyno says she will give me a shot for the pain and that I shouldnt worry....which has me worried anyways....

You'll be fine chick
Trust me its worth it for the peace of mind that both tubes are ok

As for the increased fertility, there is indeed anecdotal evidence that conception rates do peak after a HSG, but a lot of that will depend on your OH, no amount of flushing will help stationary :spermy:
If his swimmers are ok then it might help you :hugs:

I took 2 tylenol and 2 advil and still had the worst pain of my life... I was told I must have an oversensitive cervix... came within seconds of passing out from the pain. Don't want to scare you but no one told me how bad it would hurt they all said it was like a pap but it was nothing like a pap. I hope it goes well for you though, some say it's not bad.

hi, had mine done in april, was really scared, but didn't feel a thing! Smear was worse! I had to turn on my side to get the dye flowing through my left tube, as we lost some of the dye on the way in (it leaked out). No spotting or cramping. i took 1paracetamol 2hrs b4 and an ib 45min b4. Take your own pad! The hospital stuff is horible! Not sure if it really helps with fertility ...it probably has a placebo effect, but many people would probably disagree. I read a number of clinical studies and they all say dif. things.... those who say it works say you've got 3month increased fertility window.... Didn't work for me.... Good luck and let us know how it goes. X
