My son went for his 9 month check this week and he weighs 30lb. 4oz and is 31 inches long. The doctor was pretty shocked and decided to order blood work to get done (sugar, iron, thyroid). The blood work all came back great but he wants my son to see and endocrinologist because of his weight. This doctor is not an actual pediatrician. With our insurance, we don't have many choices for doctors in my area. This doctor is a family doctor. Anyway, the doctor said that there is probably nothing wrong with my son but he just wants a specialist to take a look anyway.

Does/did anyone have a very large baby and there were no issues? My son is still breastfeed and does eat some solids (not very much). I make all the solids. He eats all green veggies, corn, carrots, chicken, pork, turkey, sweet potato, squash, beans, oatmeal, yogurt, and all fruits. He eats nothing out of a box. I buy all organic.

So is he just a big boy? My sons father is 6'2 and 250 lbs. He is all muscle not fat. My brother is 6'6, my Dad is 6'3. My brothers son is 15 and is 6'2, 210. We have a lot of big people in our family. I think that is why my son is big. He is a very happy baby. Doesn't cry unless he is overtired. He is definitely a joy to be around. He has never been sick and hasn't had any health issues at all.

My son was 31 inches tall at his 9 month checkup, although he was only 24 pounds. His height has always been off the charts tall. At 16 he is now 6'6. While I'm average height, my husband is 6'4 and my brother-in-law is 6'10.

If everyone in your family is tall, it's probably genetic and he's just going to be a tall guy. Because my son's head was also over 95%, the doctor tried to make me take him for a series of head x-rays for no real reason. He's just turned out to be a very big guy with a very large head.

He certainly is very large. Whether or not it's a problem is up to you. He's the average weight of a boy 2 years and 8 months old and height a boy 1 year and 2 months old. His weight isn't proportional to his height, so he's tall but still very heavy for how tall he is. If he were more like 22-23lbs then he'd still be large but more in proportion.

I've got a daughter who has always been far too heavy for her length, so I know what it's like when doctors freak out. In a baby I probably wouldn't give it much thought. It sounds like he eats very well and has some large relatives. Your son was born just above the 75th percentile line according to the WHO growth charts for weight and way off the top for length so it sounds like he was a big baby at birth? Very long anyway! My daughter has obesity issues but she's only like 6lbs heavier than your son and will be 3y 5m tomorrow.

I think that your son is just going to be a big boy.

I'm 5'4" and my partner is about 5'9", so perfectly average, and both of average weight (though we do both put weight on relatively easily if we are not careful), yet our daughter is really tall and slim for her age. I had no idea where she got that from - both sets of grandparents are average height and weight (except MIL who is very overweight). Then I realised that the only tall person in the family is my brother, who is well over six feet and slim - if those obscure genes can have popped up in my little girl, then I find it very likely that your son has received the 'big' gene too with his direct family links along the male line.

Remember it's not just about body size/fat - a child's head, if on the larger side, can be pretty heavy, and bone/muscle size and density play a part too. My kid was born at 8lb 15 oz! 55 cm long, a great big head and little body fat. She's the same now ... she probably weighs somewhere in the 20s these days. She dropped nearly 3 centile lines in the first six months after being born on the 91st and has stayed there. I was worried - but now I can see that that is right for her. She is very, very active.

I dunno if he's mobile yet, but if not, once he gets moving more he will probably slim down. It can be hard for chunkier babies to get going. He clearly is eating a lot of good foods and body-building proteins, and as you say, is a happy and no doubt bright little boy, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Have the tests, of course, to be sure, but I doubt they will find anything. Some babies have to be huge - if not, we wouldn't have the growth charts that we do.

I wouldn't be worrying just yet especially as your OH is pretty big. My cousins baby was about the same size at that age, he's now two and still weighs about that although he is a lot taller. The weight dropped off once he started walking although he's obviously still head and shoulders above most toddlers his age. He's just a big, tall baby. In contrast my DS is 11 months this week and weighs all of 17.10lb he's just a short slender baby. They come in all shapes and sizes 😄.

Hmm, not sure. My 4.5 year old is just a few pounds heavier than your kid, but he is on the skinny side...Why not look at it as "better safe than sorry"?

Thank you for all of your responses. Yes, I am definitely going to get him looked at by the specialist, I just wanted to hear of others experiences. I don't have an appointment until May 25th though :( Oh well, maybe by that time he will be walking and lose a bit of his chubby :)

My son was 25 lbs and 29 inches tall at nine months... He started walking at ten months and started slimming down a bit.. Now he is a little over 50th percentile and perfect. Wouldn't hurt to get your son checked but chances are getting is fine :)

is this him in the avatar? if so he really doesnt look out of proportion at all!

I wouldnt be too worried hun, some babies are big, some babies are small. They have to come in all shapes and sizes or there would be no chart to go by :) my sisters kids were all quite large babies (i dont remember weights though) and theyve slimmed down as theyve got older.

Yes, that is him as my avatar. I think he is definitely proportional. Big and tall like all the men in my family ;) I'm not going to worry, I will just see what they say.

Wow! Big boy :) so long as he's in proportion I wouldn't worry x

My DS2 is a big baby. 99% percentile for weight and height at 1 year check up. Not worried as both me and hubby are tall and if he is anything like my DS1 he will slim down later.

And congrats to you for managing to carry him:thumbup: He does look awfully cute, btw (my firstborn was a chunky baby too, my second so skinny at times, after he started on solids, that we were told to see an endocrinologist, and we had to add fat/oil to his foods - yet all was well! He is still skinny.)

I wouldn't worry. My nephew was born at 34 weeks and came out 6 pounds 5 oz. By 9 months he was in 18 months clothing and he is 2 in 4t clothes. His dad is a big guy too, boys with big dad's are just big like their dad! :)

Hi I wondered if any of you with large babies could post what weight yours were when they were approx 18 weeks as I've had LO weighed and she started on 98th centile at birth but last two measurements have taken her over growth chart for height and weight. Today at 18 wks she is 21lb 6oz. My middle one is exceptionally tall (about to turn 5 but fits 7-8 clothes) so I'm wondering how phoebe will develop and whether she may be even taller

At around 18 weeks my son was 20 pounds and 26 1/2 inches. Looks like you have a pretty big baby too!
