The health visitor has just called as i've been quite worried about my babies flat spot he has on the left side on his head, she has advised these things happen and to give him more tummy time. While she was here i asked her to measure his head out of curiousity.Turns out his head has grown 7cm in 5months.At birth it was 38cm now 45cm,she looked concerned but said not to worry.Obviously I AM WORRIED,his head is now in the 98th percentile and googling really hasnt helped as im now convinced he has fluid on the brain:cry: .I have health anxiety as it is and now im very worried.Any one else been in a simple situation? Please?

If you check the new charts his head was on the 98th centile at birth also; so its not a worry. Its only a worry if they jump full centiles on the chart. If your baby's head had fallen centiles in HC this could also indicate a problem so following the same centile is great. Maybe the HV was looking concerned because you looked worried? xx

Please do not worry. First of all please do not google, it won't help and it won't apply to your baby. If Bradley had fluid on the brain there would be other indicators and she would refer you (I think they can feel some rigid parts or something, sorry I did know but can't remember now). Our baby's head grew lots, probably more than your babies in the first few months. I know that his head went from around the 25th percentile to the 98th percentile. However, placed in context it made sense because he is also on the 91st percentile for length and just under that for weight. I panicked when the doctor at the six weeks check put him down to be 'observed' but the HV came every couple of weeks and because it was in line with his height/weight they stopped observing it.

and by full centiles I mean the lines on the chart, not individual centiles-so if a baby jumped from 50th to 75th this may indicate a problem (then again all of mine have had this and it has been a genetic thing and not a problem) xx

Oh and I forgot to say that when he was born his weight was also in line with his head around the 25th percentile, so it all then grew in proportion.

There was a thread on here about a week ago about head circumference and lots of people seemed to have babies with high head measurements. Have a look through it because I think you will feel really reassured.

Dont worry!!! My lo head is 91st centile. We even had a stay in hospital in december as at her 6 wk check the monday the doctor measured it then she had to be seenon assessment unit on the wednesday regarding reflux and they measured it then and found I think a 2cm difference so made us stay in incase of fluid on the brain but it turned out the doctor on the monday had measured wrong!! My head was big as a baby and I had to have it monitored regularly, hubby also has a larger head although I dont see an issue with it! Lol.

Please dont worry hun!

xx

Yeah, it's quite complex. They look at the babies measurements as a whole too (I did a little research on this when I was concerned), so you have to look at it in context.

Thanks for your replies ladies, just feels like theres always something to worry about, and now i cant stop looking at his head.Ive just looked at the chart again it appears his head was 38cm at 6 weeks making it the 50th percentile and now the 98th!!:o thats even worse right!?

Honest opinion ladies do you think his head is out of proportion.

Not at all, he's bloody beautiful.

He looks perfect to me!! Don't stress he is beautiful and I'm sure if she thought something was off she would have said something about it. xx

Your boy is perfect!!

Otter has a GIIIIIIIAAAAAAAANNNNTTTTT head. He was born with a slightly big head -- 36.25cm and by 8 weeks it had grown to 44 cm. Seriously. That's the truth. When the pediatrician looked at what the nurse had written for that (and she checked it 3 times!!!) his eyes buldged out and he immediately started feeling all over Otter's head with a look of worry. He simply couldn't believe his head could be that big with nothing wrong. Right freaked me out! But he said every seemed fine and we'd just see what happened.

It continued to grow like crazy and has always stayed well off the upper end of the charts. However, it has followed the normal curve shape that all centiles follow -- which means it has slowed at the right pace, just remained big. Now, at 2.5 his head is somewhere around 53cm. He can fit, barely, into a large size hat for BOYS (not tots), but can also wear a size small for a MAN! He's 2!! :dohh:

But you know what -- he's fine. Better than fine. He's crazy smart. They moved him into Preschool 6 months before the age they normally would because he already knew everything all the kids in Pre-School knew. He remains super advanced with just about everything. Big heads house big brains. ;)

As long as the shape is normal and it stays on a general growth CURVE (centile matters less), then he is fine. :hugs:

The funniest thing about Otter is that his big head sometimes gets the better of him. When he's learning new motor skills, you can tell he is at the mercy of that big head -- it throws him around! :haha: He's so top heavy that it can be hard for him to learn to compensate sometimes, which is quite funny. He'll be running at full speed, turn a corner, his head won't coperate fast enough and you can see it start to pull him over.

Here's some pics of Otter to compare for you. The first is at about the same age as your boy now. The second is more recent. Still has a giant head!

Please don't stress about it hun! I've finally come to terms with Leos huuuge head and wish I'd never worried! Your LO is absolutely gorgeous and his head doesn't look too big at all! Leo was born with his head on the 98th percentile and 2 weeks ago (22 weeeks), his head measured 47cm and is on the 99.6th percentile! I can tell his head looks slightly too big for his body but he' my gorgeous baby boy so who cares?! Turns out me and my OH have big heads too haha

Here's a pic :cloud9: xxx

(Oh and he can now sit unaided and is great at tummy time so having a big head hasn't held him back at all!!)

Thanks so much ladies,i feel so much better, maybe he just has a big head and thats fine with me aslong as he is healthy. Thanks for all the kind comments he is a lil cutie and such a lil character.

Otter and Leo are little beautiecuties!xxx

My Los head grew 10cm from 25th line to I think 98th we had to have a ultrasound scan but all was fine they said maybe his head was a bit squashed inside me and has caught up with the rest of his body. They only really worry if he isn't developing in other ways like he should. I know it's hard but try not to worry and don't google it freaked me out too!

Gorgeous baby! I'm sure his head is fine. My guy is a candy apple -- 99th head, 30th weight. The dr sent him for a CT, nothing was wrong. Just a big head. Loads of brains.

Looks perfect to me and Im so glad you posted this. My LO's head is just off the scale and the stupid health visitor made me worry - my whole family have big heads and my LO seems absolutely fine, very alert and very happy and like your LO, his head doesnt look out of proportion at all, its just because its a weird shape at the moment where he only lies one way! Try not to worry, easier said than done I know but I am in exactly the same boat x

Please do not worry!! :hugs: Nolan's head has always been off the charts, it scared me for the longest time. He is now 20 months and perfectly fine- with a big melon. :haha: He also had flat spots (pretty severe) but once he started sitting up and being mobile, they rounded themselves out.

As long as they follow the curve (even if it is the high curve) that is a good sign.

Here he was at 4 months-

Even if his head was on a lower centile and jumped; 99% of the time it isn't anything sinister. Its usually of more concern if a baby drops a lot of head centiles as it may indicate a growth problem, as happened with my second eldest-his head stopped growing at all for several months in his first year but thankfully by the age of one it started growing again. My second youngest his head was off the top of the charts and is now bigger than many adult women and probably some men as well-he is 4, nothing wrong with him he is just a big thinker. Still there was a time when he was younger than his head looked alarmingly big and I kept thinking it was something wrong xx
