Huh...have been told my toddler is obese?!

Ppsshhhh he looks fab!

My boys are solid and stocky - 50 percentile for height and just 75 for weight (were both 95 for weight until their 2.5 weigh in) it's always been a concern of mine for Sam as he has joint issues and only just started walking but I was always told not to worry its just his build xxxx

He certainly doesn't look it. Fin's only a couple months older and was weighed Thurs and is 28lbs also, the extra couple months makes it 75th for Fin's age. They said it was spot on for him. I wonder if the focus is more on the fact that Thomas has gone from 25th to 91st percentiles in a shortish time rather than the actual weight? I notice Fin weighs the sam as Thomas but has actually dropped a percentile as he was always 91st from about 5 weeks old. So that could explain why we've not had it mentioned as a negatie but you have? I dunno. Either way neither look overweight at all, let alone obese xx

He is by no means 'obese' in my eyes! My toddler is 19 months and weighs 28.5lbs and he's quite tall (we are 5'9 and 6ft) and he's at the top of the charts for both weight and height and I have never been told he's obese. Most people think he is 2 because he's so big! And he weighed 9.5lbs at birth and 25lbs at 12 months! I have a big boy! Try not to let it bug you, he looks perfectly healthy to me :)

I think its just your misunderstanding. May be that's because of you care for him a lot.

He looks perfect! A bit of padding is good at this age although he doesnt look like he has much padding really. Ignore them. Society has become so obsessed with weight and obestity that we are calling a toddler FAT!!!!! crazy. He looks like my son xxxx

Thanks again for all the positive replies. I know (most of you anyway I assume) aren't medical professionals, but it's reassuring to get support from other parents of toddlers.

The jump in percentiles is the part that worries me too. His height does the same thing - he'll be 25th percentile, have a growth spurt and be around 75th, then no growth for a while and fall back to the 25th again.

When I look at his body, he's just like me as a kid. Small shoulders, slim arms, pot belly, and big bum and thighs. I know a toddler can't be muscly, but his bottom and legs are very well shaped and firm. That is the most solid part of him. His dad and I enjoy weight lifting, and he loves to copy everything dad does, so we let him lift little kettlebells, and he does squats (we don't make him do anything, he just wants to be like his dad).

I just find it so ironic that I've moved to where my MIL lives, and every time she sees Thomas she's so concerned about how "tiny and skinny" he is, she harps on and on about it! She thinks because he's not in size 2 clothing that there is something terribly wrong with him. Every time I see her she pulls a sad face and sighs about how small he is.

His dad has a BMI above normal even though he's got very low body fat, he's very muscular with a flat stomach and abs, so I don't take BMI as being something to really worry about...well except mine as I know I have a lot of weight to lose.

It's funny, as a breastfeeder I spent his first year worrying he wasn't heavy enough, now I'm worried he's too heavy, ugh.

My son has the little pot belly. pretty much every toddler i know has it! As far as i'm concerned thats normal. And BMI is only one way to measure whether you are overweight... muscle weighs more than fat. xx

he's gorgeous! A perfect size and shape :)

Obese???? Are you kidding me? DS is 86cm and weighs about 13kgs too but everyone says he's skinny! How crazy for the doc to say that to you. :dohh: He looks healthy, strong and very cute.

I notice our LOs are similar age and we are similarly pregnant - boy first time, girl 2nd time. Snap! :haha:

Yeah, Fin's not yet in age 2 clothes... In fact only just went up to 18-24 bits so how anyone could think his size is too big is stupid! Xx

In theory he is obese - purely because of the disparity between his height percentile and his weight one. Hopefully that will even out as he gets older and as your son has a pretty healthy diet then it shouldn't be a problem. I think that they mention it to you as something that needs to have an eye kept on it because if the child keeps putting on weight at the same rate then it would actually be a problem.

He doesn't look overweight at all so i don't think you have a problem on your hands :) I think the problem is that there are actually too many obese children around and there are a lot of problems related to weight and the medical profession are really trying to help combat this problem but they've cone to the extreme and are targeting children when they are too young.

No way is your son obese! Pay no attention hun he is absolutely gorgeous and looks the picture of health!!!xxxxx

Maybe there is something wrong with him though? MIL put the idea in my head that he's got a heavy tumour in his stomach, as she claims her boys never had pot bellies as toddlers :(.

Hun, my toddler isn't chubby but isn't slim at the same time. Some will say he's 'petite' but i can still see chub. He still has a pot belly! Alot of kids have pot bellys.

And in no way at all does he look obese. That is pathetic. He looks perfect to me. Don;t listen to people. They can have you thinking all sorts. Believe me, some of the things my family has said i could just slap them!

I would not worry at all!! My daughter has a little "pot" belly and most babies/toddlers have them! :)
Your son looks absolutely perfect!
My daughter is 20 months and weighs around 28-30 pounds
and 40 inches tall but I have never been told she is obese or overweight even though she is off the charts.

Nope! He looks like a gorgous little man! You must be one proud mummy -- he is perfect hun x

1. He's gorgeous
2. He doesn't look even slightly pudgy let alone obese
3. The health service are going to create a generation of eating disorders.
4. Grrrrr

Our hv wrote down the wrong weight for H and put her into the obese range. She wrote 17kg - it was actually 14kg - and started lecturing me but also saying it is probably ok as H is tall and that she didn't look overweight. They have their ridiculous one size fits all chart, not taking account of any discrepancies like build etc.

Take no notice - it's all cobblers.

WHO told you he was obese? An idiot, or a pediatrician? I doubt any qualified doctor specializing in children would say that.

When my daughter was 3 months old a pediatrician told me to put her in a room shut the door and let herself cry herself to sleep because she ate more than the average amount for her age.

:growlmad:
