My husband just came down with a bad cold and my LO is only three weeks old. Should I be worried about him getting sick when he's so little?? I am breastfeeding full time and was told that baby will receive antibodies through me so hoping this will help....I reeeeally don't want him to get sick!

Also, does your immune system remain weak for awhile postpartum?

Try your best to keep him away from the baby. If its just a cold it won't harm him to get it. I got sick somehow when baby was four weeks and she got it right from me. She mostly just had a stuffy nose that I constantly had to clear out. There's not much you can do if they get sick, its just hard to deal with.

My lo had his first cold at 2 weeks old thanks to his big brother!! It's actually not been as bad as I expected, he's very snotty and we've had 1 bad night where he was up every couple of hours but that's it. It's taking a while to go though, he's still snotty now even though I'm over it (I also caught it) and he's breast fed so getting my anti bodies.

My husband had the flu when dd was 2 weeks and she was breastfed. She never got the flu.

The immune system of babies are very weak so just be careful . Also you have to make sure you don't fall sick. Since you are breastfeeding your LO .If you fall sick or catch fever your LO would get it from you .

We had five colds go through our house in the first nine weeks of my LO's life (2 for toddler, 3 for OH). Neither LO or I got a single one. I reckon it's down to vigilant handwashing and surface wiping, and keeping a bit of distance. BFing helps for sure too.

Thanks for the replies!

Larkspur, your poor family :( It looks like my two year old now has the same cold as my dh:dohh: Guess I'll be hiding out in my room for the next while! I am a frequent hand washer and careful not to touch my face so praying we stay healthy.

I'm not sure this is true. If you are breast feeding then your baby gets your antibodies through your milk. So if you do get sick, the very best thing you can do is keep breast feeding!

Yes, the original statement is definitely not true! If you do get sick, your body produces even more antibodies than usual, so breastfeeding becomes even more protective!

With my first i had a terribly nasty cold whilst she was newborn. She was ebf too. She didnt catch it, she had her first cold at 9 months. First time took her to docs when she was 18 months..i put it down to breastfeeding. It really helps

Make a bed for your hubby on the sofa away from the baby. Tell him to sleep there until he feels better just to be safe for the both of you ;)

So far, so good! Both of us are *knock on wood* still healthy!

Nb babies still have antibodies from when they were in the womb...plus from you bm...so if you get sick your lo is ptryy much protected. If youre going to get sick, youre going to get sick! Sometimes you cant always prevent it! Youre doing all you can with bfing your lo:-):-)
