I'm 6 months post partum ad have just been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I have been so hungry and eating so much but still losing wight, if I don't eat every few hours I get dizzy and shaky and my hair is falling out. I should have gone to the drs as soon as I stated having symptoms (3 months pp) but I just brushed it off and been tired and a new mother and breastfeeding ect.

ATM my dr doesn't want to start medication and he has taken more bloods to check for auto immune disease(graves disease maybe) he is going to write to a specialist for advice and he wants me to make an appointment again in a month. He also stated that it might just go away. Anyone any experience of this?

Is there anything I can do in the meantime to help myself? Good diet maybe? Anyone else been in a similar situation?

wow..see another doctor asap...hyper is dangerous..i went down from 167 post baby to 110 in less then two months...

i ended up with graves in the end but its the same meds...he needs to get you started on meds asap to get your body under control...

i was flopped around to after i had my baby until one doc finally took control and within a week i saw so much improvment..lost half my hair waiting and my weight i ended up a skeliton...(not to scare you) but this waiting this..

go to an endocronologist...call one if u have too and tell them what is going on..

you really need to start the meds before you get soooo sick...your already sick...but it can get worse and fast with hyper...9(hug))

Ive got an overactive thyroid was diagnosed end of august last year. My symptoms were weight loss, heart paulpations,Feeling panicked and couldnt keep still really fidgety and my periods all over the place as well as diarehhea. Im on a med called Carbimazole and been seeing a specialist every 3 months. At first i felt very poorly as i was suffering with a flu type virus which i was told probably kicked the thyroid issue off. But now after trying to get it to settle down after 3 months of trying with high doseage meds it did settle now im on 5mg of carbimazole a day and its ok. But they do want me to have raidoactive drink eventually to enable to me to have a scan which will show what the problem is. Graves diease has been ruled out though its come up negative on blood tests.

hyper and graves you end up on the same meds except they want me to do chemo to kill my thyriod which i wont do....ill end up on the same meds anyway so why bother

And were you able to breastfeed on the meds? And I want to ttc #2 next may and I'm worried that all this will effect this.. :(

Agreed!

As far as I'm aware you can't stay on Carbimazole (CBZ) or Propylthiouracil (PTU) indefinitely, so if your thyroid gland doesn't cop itself on and start working properly within a year or two, they will have to do something - either RAI or a thyroidectomy (partial or total).

And were you able to breastfeed on the meds? And I want to ttc #2 next may and I'm worried that all this will effect this.. :(

You definitely CAN'T ttc if you're on Carbimazole, and I don't think Breast-feeding is advised either.....so if ttc is in your long-term plan be sure to mention this as soon as medication is mentioned, and ask to be put on Propylthiouracil (PTU) instead.

im on tapazole for 5 yrs now with no problems my mother is onher med for i dont know 20 plus yrs now..

so yes you can succeffully stay on your meds as long as there is no problem  tapazole is neither of the meds mentioned above and i have breast fed on it without problems as well.

Sincerely not wanting to stir a hornets nest here...but I can't talk for tapazole...I've never had it given as an option, and I'm not even sure its even available in the UK or Ireland?

but there are plenty of articles and research papers out there to indicate that long-term use of anti-thyroid drugs is not recommended.

It is my understanding that CBZ and PTU shoudn't be used for more than 2-3 yrs, due to liver issues and possible affects on WBC counts.

I dont know anything over there, was only treated over there for a short while, but I only know from being a nurse on what I do and learned and what I deal with , with my family members who have it and myself. Tapazole is avail over there I took it, My mom is on synthroid. Either way nobody in my family has yet to stop taking there meds for any reason no have I, its not stiring hornets nest. I know guildlines here and there can be different but from a person who has been on it long term and family member as well I would say there really is no problem as long as your own body has no problem. But that has to do with any meds and problems really too..
