While on vacation my OBGYN called to say my blood tests showed a *slight* hypothyroidism. I was at the cross line between first and second trimester so she isn't worried and said it could be because of gestational age and is okay with waiting until my next monthly appointment to retest. Sooooooo of course I am panicking.

What are the symptoms? I had hyper and hypo during my teenage years very briefly but haven't had any episodes since then (haven't been on meds for them for years either).

i would be worried especially if you been diagnosed with it before..the thyriod is something not to play around with especially during pregnancy..

can you go to an endo and be checked or your reg gp? I would be just as scared. im hyper/graves...even slightly off needs to be checked...

Apparently during the first trimester testing for hypo- or hyperthyroidism is tricky because of the fluctuation of hormones and the tests can be thrown off.

I'm looking for someone who has experienced hypothyroidism symptoms. I have enough worry about it :) Thanks

wow, anyway your welcome..sigh

i went hypo for a short time...

i felt tired and sluggish....alot of the symptoms are the same though, so its hard to tell....

as having had it at some point in your life i would think you would want to get it rechecked to make sure you are ok..
you asked for help...i tried too......what you gave back was not called for..:(

i wasnt trying to SCARE you .....but honestlhy the thyriod is something not to be pushed aside....I would would want another looking at...

then again that is just ME.....

HOPE YOU find your answer

ps my mother, aunt and grandmother are hypo so i dont think im unversed in thyroid...

I've been hypo before, too. Some symptoms are:

increased fatigue
paler, pastier, dull looking complexion
dry skin
constipation
less appetite

And I now it's not what you want to hear, but I second what JustHoping said. It's not something you want to mess around with in pregnancy. I'd get a second opinion about getting it treated now. (sorry!)

I am hypo, have been for ages. I take medication for it and as soon as I found out I was pregnant I contacted my endo who didn't even bother seeing me, he just called in a prescription for an increase in dose (we discussed increasing during our last visit because I started feeling symptoms again) and he told me that pregnant women who are already hypo always need to increase their dosage during pregnancy.

If you don't want to take meds, borderline levels arent toooo terrible unless you feel symptomatic. If my TSH is over 2 I feel symptoms and I prefer to keep my levels at around 0.5-1. Depending on your lab they may have the cutoff at 3 or 5 but I would say a lot of it depends on how you feel.

If you prefer all natural thyroid supplements there is naturethroid and armour if you can get a doctor to prescribe them. Doctors tend to favor synthroid. I am on a combo of cytomel and tirosint.

Symptoms include brain fog, forgetfulness, fatigue, dry skin, scaly skin (for example, my elbows are always terrible when I dont have enough thyroid hormone), hair falling out, thin, dry or brittle hair, gaining weight easily even when you don't eat much, difficulty losing weight, joint pain, puffy eyes, mood swings, depression. The symptoms are different for everyone and many don't experience symptoms unless their TSH is very high while some notice it right away.

I am very sensitive to any changes because I've been on the thyroid hormone for so long that I notice feeling different right away and some people will have symptoms and be told they are fine with normal TSH levels but even though its in range it isnt right for them.

Unfortunately many of the symptoms are similar to pregnancy symptoms so its difficult to differentiate which ones are due to the thyroid and which arent but I know right away after I start taking the thyroid hormone that I feel a ton better.

Also, all thyroid medications, as far as I know, are Class A for pregnancy and totally safe.

My mom, sister, aunt, and several other female family members are hypothyroid. The symptoms really do vary. My sister's hair went grey at age 14 and she developed permanent white patches on her body. She was also tired and in general just not feeling well. My mom's levels got so low for so long her body almost shut down. She could literally not get out of bed some days. Finally, her OB tested her thyroid and she felt better within a week once on medicine.

I am hyper-vigilant on the symptoms because it can run in families. I get tested on a yearly basis at a minimum and whenever I'm feeling bad without explanation. Extreme tiredness, hair loss, weight gain, etc. can all be symptoms.

Personally, I'd get tested before the next appointment to see if there is a trend. It's easily managed and something you don't want to mess with.

hey hun, how are you feeling? I wanted to apologise for me getting a bit snippy in talking to you about thyriod..
something happened, NOT YOU and it rubbed me the wrong way and instead of dealing with it, it came out so wrong...and you where on the other side ;(...i been feeling god awful how I spoke to you since and I didnt want to leave my post to you like that.....
Im so sorry again.....

I do want to say i am a bit worried about you with the thyriod as all the girls are right on here....and even if your just alittle of with the thriod I would get it checked a second time to see if its true...and for the doc to keep an eye on it...
i would also see about what meds to start..if you feel more comfy with the natural, i would ask the doc if that is something for you..

the thyriod hormone take care of so much of your body....so its not just all those symptoms you need to worry about...
your organs can actually shut down and you can end up in the hospital very very ill, and that is just from your thriod being alittle off for more then alittle bit of time. So you really do want to get it under control and looked after proper by an endocronologist. Expecially because it can hurt your bABY too......

Im nogt trying to bully you at all, im just very concerned expecially since your doctor blew it off while your pregnant....

I wish you all the best and again im very sorry if my old post seem snipy....:hugs:

please update us if you do see someone about your thyriod...it would be so wonderful if it was a lab glitch and you wouldnt have to ever deal with this.....thinking positive thoughts for you hun...:)

During pregnancy, hyper is more dangerous than hypo.

Also, you need to get results from your ob. Several times I have had an ob or other doc tell me I'm hypo because my tsh was very low BUT low tsh indicates hyper not hypo. Low t3 and t4 indicate hypo.

Finally, it's perfectly normal for you to have low tsh in the first trimester.

I have hypothyroid (actually hoshimoto's, but thats a whole other ball game) and have been since I was 21. Im now 29. My symptoms are premature grey hair like mention above... got my first grey hair at 21! thank goodness for hair dye! Also fatigue, depression (many people, unfortunably not me), weight gain (due to your metabolism slowing down).

Since being preggo by thyroid has gone up and down. My OB says this is completely normal and TONS of her patients are treated for thyroid when they never had problems before. Your hormones are going crazy... including thryoid.

I asked if this hurt/harms the babies. I am on a high dose but my levels are only a little out of range. She said this would not harm the baby in any way just make me feel like crap. She was more worried about the way I felt than anything related to the baby.

I know everyone said quite a few different things... but thats my experience with it.

Tthis can be helpful...its explains both diseases and says what can happen to mother and child.....its a very interesting read..

Tired, trouble with weight, cold a lot. Those are only some I can think of right now. I have hypothyroidism and it likely caused my miscarriage last time (it was not diagnosed prior to bfp). I would suggest trying to get a referral for an endocrinologist. Your body needs up to 50% more thyroid when pregnant, and like a pp said, it isn't anything to play around with. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I called my endocrinologist and he upped my dose without even seeing him.

I guess I am an exception as i was on a really high dosage of synthroid but my dosage has decreased since i got prego. I have had hypothyroidism since I was 16, I am now 36. My symptoms are extreme fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, thining. I would say a lot of symptoms can mirror pregnancy symptoms. It is important to get checked but I would not stress about it if your numbers are only off slightly. It is more of a concern if your numbers are way out of wack. It is important to stay on top of it though as my kidneys and ovaries had just about completely shut down before I was diagnosed. Now that I am prego I have to get it checked monthly to ensure it stays in the normal range.

your welcome...i dont google much and there lots out there that is bs..hard to weed through it you know..

but this seemed decent enough and accurate....i enjoyed reading it as it broke down both diseases bit by bit..explaining what its all about..

i give it a A plus :) lol

i been sick with hyper for yeaRS..a few months i did go hypo out of noplace and your not supposed to do that with graves...but i did...goes to show everyones hyper and hypo is actually uniqually there too...not everything is by the book...but one thing with both is you need to keep on top as it can cause damage to your internal organs.....now that scares me more then me with my grey thin hair...oh yea,..

im grey and my hair is thin too....alot of symtoms are very much alike....

either way its just good to keep an eye on both

Just to update: my thyroid was fine! It was as my OB said, that during a period of time between first and second tri, the TSH fluctuates drastically and can give false hypo- or hyperthyroid results on blood tests.

I'm 20w now and baby and I are both very healthy and fine!
