Hi Everyone,

I am a first time Mum to be, 17 weeks pregnant today and I am already terrified of what is to come with the Labour and Birth.

I have been hearing so many horror stories about what can go wrong and it is scaring me stupid. I even have bad dreams!!

I would love to hear some nice stories as everyone I speak too seems to only have bad things to say.

Has anyone out there had a fairly pleasant labour and birth??

Thanks
Krystale

I would try to relax some. Although I haven't done it myself I have no fears on the subject only because all I think about is the end result of finally having my little girl in my arms. Just try to think of all the good things that will come and not to dwell on the negative. :hugs: I'm sure everything will work out perfectly fine for you.

i have to admit, labor was hard--BUT i knew it was not going to be easy. i had a wonderful and positive experience even though i had an induction. the contractions hurt, but the pain has a purpose. i am SO looking forward to giving birth again this time around. i have NEVER felt more powerful! good luck, you will do great!

I was in early labour for 3 days and retained the placenta after birth but other than that my labour was GREAT! Really painful yes but I would do it all over again!

Thanks everyone.
I know it is going to hurt....a lot! theres no getting away from that.
I also know I need to stop worrying because it is undoubtedly not helping!
I just want my baby girl here and hopefully wont have to go through anything too traumatic.

Has anyone had an epidural? Id be interested to hear peoples thoughts on that??

My labour was lovely :)
Dont be scared, its alllllllll worth it to hold your baby x

LOVED my epidural. it was a must with my induction. biggest thing to remember is to hold absolutely still. after the epidural i was able to relax enough to dilate to 10 cm in about 15 minutes. i was able to move my legs, and had enough sensation to know when it was time to push. i was able to push very effectively (less than 20 minutes) and the baby was very alert and breastfed within 15 minutes of being born. if i have to be induced again, i will for sure have the epidural again.

**the only scary part was i dilated so fast, that my daughter kind of "dropped" into the birth canal (i physically felt her drop) and she had the cord wrapped around her throat a couple times. her heartrate dropped for a short period of time, but they had me turn several times, stimulated the top of her head and she popped right back into a regular heart rate.

i know some women have side effects from the epidural, but i had a wonderful experience.

Thanks for that aj11. I am considering an epidural and its nice to know that it can be done so you still feel 'involved'. I have heard people say they couldnt feel a thing and didnt know when to push. I dont really want that, I just want less pain! ahhhhh

although I am scared I am looking forward to it in a different way, being with my partner and meeting our little girl....i know it is going to be the most amazing thing i have ever experienced!

Thanks for sharing your experience with me :D

hi hun, i just went through it all almost 2 weeks ago and it was my first. my plan of a all natural labor went out the window as soon as i was admitted to the hosp. i was 2 days over my due date and went in for some contractions because i missed my app that day, babies heart rate was dropping and they decided to induce me. after having the pitocin my contractions were getting stronger and i DID decide i wanted the epi before i couldnt handle the pain anymore. just remember the longer u wait to get the epi the harder it will b to get because your already in pain. also it wears off more towards the end so its easier to feel the contractions so u can push. i liked it that way because i skipped most of the pain untill it was push time. i even got mine topped up because i could still feel contractions and move just like normal the first time. if your calm and dont let it get to you i think it makes it sooo much easier. this was my first baby and i had a 13 hr labor and 45 min delivery. after having the epi i dialated pretty fast because my body was more calm if thatmakes sence

thanks SMA1588 and congratulations!! very beautiful pic :)

i am edging more towards having an epidural, probably as soon as i am allowed! i like the idea that it can relax you so it may help you dilate quicker. my stepsister was in labour for 48 hours and is scaring me silly every day with her horror stories.

i am sure you are enjoying your beautiful baby so much, i am jealous...cannot wait for mine and i still have over 5months to go.

can i just ask, did you have any tearing or cuts that had to be stitched, thats another thing i am terrifying myself with!!!

i told the midwife i didnt not want to be cut and if possible help me from tearing so as baby was crowning i felt her kinda streatching me with her fingers around babies head. the only tear i got was a small labia tear and it couldnt of been that bad because she said she had to look inside to see if i tore. i think i only have about 4 stiches.....yes just to let u know the thing they sew u up with looks like a fish hook but right after having the baby u really dont feel much. i honestly only remember the back pain i had at 9.5 cm then it was time to get her out. i didnt feel the after birth much just kinda felt like a big blob falling out lol. i wanted no epi and only pain meds untill i talked with the anisteasiologest (sp?) and he told me the epi goes to the nerves not in the blood stream of me and baby so i chose the epi. baby came out fine and did very well..... ure more than welcome to PM me if u want

I had a pretty bad birth but is it any consolation that I would do it all over again at any given time just because of the end result?!

I too was terrified throughout pregnancy about labour and considering I had a really, really bad birth (I won't go into detail) it really wasn't as bad as I thought it was. Your body goes into fight mode, yes it is quite painful but the pain is blurred because your focus is on getting your baby out safely. It's a strange experience and one nobody could understand unless going through it themselves.

Let's put it in prespective. The hard part is pregnancy, that lasts 8 months of pain, hormones & all together can be quite stressful. What the hell is 9 months compared to a few hours of pain? Honest to god, you will cope with it because your body is designed to :). Every single person in this world got brought here the same way, people are delivering babies as we speak, you can do it and you WILL do it & it won't be as bad as you think!

I felt like superwoman the day after I gave birth, I done all of the months of pregnancy and brought something that is priceless into the world. :)

so heres my long story short, first one 2 weeks early had to be induced twice, all i had with him was demoral, but it was all front labour, second one three weeks early, induced as well, i had such bad back labour i decided 4 hrs into it to get an epidural. best thing in the world, i think i am just gonna opt to get it this time too, made it so much easier and less painful, but both labours were about 6 hrs maybe 8 at the most from start to finish.... i had tearing with the first one, and then they cut me with the 2nd the tear healed quicker then the cut. hope this helps GL and dont worry, it will all fall in to place and you will know what u want and dont be affraid to get the epidural if you think you wanna go with out every womens labour and pain tolerance is different

Thank you for sharing with me everyone :)

Its nice to hear other people are scared, a lot of people have said to me they werent and I think how can you not be!!

Its nice to hear positive experiences with epis, I think this may be the way forward!!

Im sorry to hear there has been some traumatic experiences aswell, but like all of you have said it will all be worth it for the end result. Its not like going throught pain for nothing, at the end I will have the best thing thats ever happened to me and I so cant wait. I dont know how I am going to get through the next 5 months!

Thanks again everyone.

Everyone's scared and you'll get more anxious as time goes on but we're all here cos we got through it, it's a small event in a very big adventure. Once it starts you can't go back so you just get by however your birth goes and before you know it they're here :)

couldnt be more true! there is no way around it so i might aswell just stop worrying as much, atleast for now since i have so long to wait!

maybe i need to stop being such a baby :baby: haha

thanks again everyone i feel much better now!

I just thought I'd let you know about my mom.. My mom had my brother first and she said it was the most wonderful thing. She was very fortunate to have the labour pains and childbirth all happen within one hour. Then once I came along she had about 2 hours of labour and birth to bear. So you definately have the slight chance this will happen with you as well! Although we all fear new things, remember that its normally mind over matter. I am currently expecting myself (still a long ways away but itll get there!!) and the thought has definately crossed my mind as well.. I asked my mom about the labour and pains etc and she said although it was a little painful, it doesnt compare to the feeling when the child is born. The greatest feeling you will ever experience and you instantly forget about all other worries and pains. Good Luck to you and yours :) I'm sure if there haven't been complications yet you will get through this like nothing!!

Thank you so much for this, such a nice thing to hear! So far I have had no complications so fingers crossed you are right and labour will be the same!

Good luck with your pregnancy and hope you take after your Mam in the labour department!!

i honestly wasnt scared at all more in shock i think . i kinda learned how to not get myself all worked up over something new and scarey after going to so many schools and working differnt jobs. i just take things as they come and it makes it a whole lot easier

My labour/birth was awful. Thick meconium, emergency forceps and I tore into my bowel. That all being said it was so worth it for my sweet little boy xx
