Now I need to just find out exactly what they are made to do.

Are they for when you can't fasten your normal trousers and they go over the top?

I tried on some maternity trousers which fit me perfectly around the bump but the legs were so wide, they just made me look dumpy.

I use them just to cover my belly button because I had an umbilical hernia which has caused me to have an outie my whole life so my belly button is just HUGE now and actually hurts when anything touches it. The bands have multiple uses. They can also be used, like you said, to hold up non-maternity pants.

I wear mine when I've got leggings on that I push under my bump - makes me feel a little less naked (although I obviously have a top on as well to below my bum, not one for showing off my jiggly bits!!), and I also wear with "normal" jeans, so I can unbutton them if they're digging in too much. I also find if I've got a tight top on, they make my belly look nicer - my belly button seems to have gone massive and I hate seeing them though tops (it's an inny but looks weird, like a cave!).

I use them to hold my normal sized trousers up, and also they round my belly off a little better as it can look rather B shaped at times xx

They are also handy if you want to wear a normal top too but its coming up slightly short, the bump band will stop bump appearing underneath!

I wear them with my regular jeans that can no longer zip-up anymore. also you can wear it to create the layering of your tops effect, so if ur top is short wear it under it and pull down a little an it looks like your wearing 2 tops.

asda are doing maternity skinny jeans online atm! i use the bump bands so i can still wear my normal tops (for the time being!) without a bit of belly being on show out the bottom!
