Hi

Here is what has been going on so far with my baby...

He is 8 weeks old.

He started feeding on cow and gate 1 milk, but wouldnt settle day or night, only had 2oz each feed and wanted feeding every 2-3 hours. We got bigger teats in case he was struggling getting the milk out, but he stayed the same.

We changed him onto hungry baby when he was 2 weeks old. He was sick alot with rubber type substance and really constipated, screamed day and night for the few days he was on it.

So we thought it might be cow and gate that didnt agree with him, so we started him on sma gold, again didnt settle woke up screaming like he was in pain and barely slept longer than 1 hour at a time, was still awake constantly through the night. even after feeding, change and winded, he still screamed like he was in pain, even when being held.

over the last 8 weeks we have tried him on gripe water, infacol and dentinox, but none of them seemed to help him settle.

so we then put him on tommee tippee anti colic bottles, and sma hungry baby. still no change, crying constantly, wanting a feed every 2 hours, and again constipated.

so at 7 weeks old, HV said to try cow and gate comfort milk. Doctor also gave him some colief. He is the worst he has every been.

an example... last night we fed him 5oz over a 2 hour period and put him in bed at 9pm (thinking a full belly he might sleep longer). He woke up at 10.30pm and had another 2oz, then woke again at 12.30am had another 2oz, and would not settle. kept screaming and going stiff as a board, sat winding him and trying to calm him down until 3.30am, he then woke again at 4.30am screaming again but refused a bottle. Put him in his cot and he whinged until 5am when he screamed again until 6.30am, I ended up putting him on my chest in my bed just so I could get some peace.

He is like this pretty much every night. It doesnt bother me feeding, changing him etc, but he continues to scream even after i have done everything i can possibly think of to help him. I get so stressed and tired, that it takes all my strength not to shake him to shut him up:cry:. I am exhaused and cry all the time. my doctor and health visitor dont seem to think there is any thing wrong.

I have 2 other children and none of them were like this.

My dad said I had alot of problems with feeding when i was a baby, and ended up on soya milk. But dont know if this would be the answer for him.

I have changed his milk so many times and nothing seems to help. He is now on dr brown bottles and still no joy.

Any advice please, I am at my wits end :(

Firstly big :hugs:
How long do you keep him on a formula before changing, it just seems there has been a lot of change happening and his system may have been disrupted a little.

I was told you will only noticed a difference with milks after 2 weeks.

Can I ask about the rubber substance, do you mean like a mucusy type thing, if so this sounds like could be reflux.

It also sounds like lo could be feeding on demand and snacking, does he fall asleep after 2oz?

Have you tried swaddling and also look into the Prince Lionheart Slumber bear (there is a thread on babyclub). I have 2 other children, who were very bad sleepers but I never swaddled them or had that bear. Millie sleeps through for about 10 hours at the moment and I really do put it down to the bear and swaddling.

thr rubber substance was like cottage cheese but hard. we had to hoover it up because there was so much of it and a cloth didnt absorb it.

he never falls asleep after feeds, he just cries. i really dont know what else to do. i have tried exprressing breast milk to feed him with that, but because it has dried up I have only managed to get 1/2 oz.

I tried swaddling but he has a paddy and struggles to get out of it. we have a light show thing that goes on when he cries, but that doesnt calm him down either, he is a little stress head, he is never happy:(

If you wanted to express to feed him, you would need to build up your supply again, either by expressing throughout the day probably at first every 1-2 hours. How is your little one on breast milk?

Sounds like it is reflux, have you taken your lo back to the gp and explained nothing is working?

Most little ones don't like being swaddled at first but if you can do it, you will find it beneficial as they flail there arms at around 20 mins into their sleep and wake themselves up, also the bear isnt like a light show it works on the principle of white noise.

I will look into the bear. I have tried everything else! doctor said it souded like colic, but has taken a stool sample, results will be back this friday, if I can cope that long. I dread night times as I know they are going to be so difficult. I will try swaddling again tonight.

My LO was like this. Would only take a certain amount every 2-3 hours and would be stiff as a board with wind. We put her on cow & gate comfort milk for colic and constipation along with infacol and was feeding her in the tommee tippee anti colic bottles with the vaules in the middle.
It never got better right away but after a week or two of using the same thing over and over again gradually she got better with her wind and was able to sleep at night. [for a while anyway haha]/

my advice to you would be to try the infacol again. How long did you use it? cause maybe he didn't give it enough time to work.
Also the same goes for the bottles.
But as far as the milk goes, i'd put him on whatever you think is best for that. Only i know the cow and gate work wonders for us untill she was 6months and we switched her to the 6months+ milk

I'm sorry you having such a hard time, i've been there and i know its not easy. hope it gets better for you though :hugs:

With regards to swaddling, have a look on youtube, Dr Harvey Karp, he swaddles a different way, with hands down rather than across. Good luck hun, its not nice.

i do wonder if it's reflux or a lactose intolerance?
out of interest, where in manchester are you?
xx

we are in radcliffe. i am tempted to try soy milk but they said to give the comfort milk at least 2 weeks, i just dont know what to do for the best :(

I had the same problem with my son when he was a baby! We had to go through all the "try this, try that" and eventually my gp prescribed a baby gaviscon which worked wonders, not right away but within a couple of days and all along he had had reflux. I hope you get it sorted soon ((hugs))

Mine has been the same over the past few days, told not to give hungry baby as its not good for her being 5 weeks old...even tho it says for birth onwards.
Dr says she has reflux and we use gaviscon, seems to have helped but noone told us it makes the milk thicker and the no.1 teat (TT) is too small...meaning she will take more air as she tries to pull on the milk! We had to buy size 2 today and hubby gave her a feed with no gav and she is fine so Im going to try with no gav but if she sicky, use no.2 teat.
Im also going to give her the aptimel 1st milk as per HV and she will take as much as she needs. When she is older say 2-3 months...maybe use hungry baby if she not filling up.

Good Luck hun, do get gp advice re reflux, someone must listen.
I know how you feel, Im exausted and depressed with lack of sleep with bad nights, I get a lump in my throat in the eve and a nervous tummy not wanting to eat, feel anxious knowing whats coming.

firstly - I know how u feel we had and still kinda have same problem.

We started LO on Aptimil after bfing for 3 weeks, she was constipated at the change and a bit colicky so we changed to comfort - it was hell. Made her so windy and she -screamed with pumps so after 3 weeks we changed back to normal aptimil with colief and things improved. She still has wind but its much better. She is also sick a lot too, as you say the cottage cheese and I do think she has a touch of reflux too but it doesnt bother her all the time so Im not bothering giving her anymore meds (we tried gaviscon and im not sure it helped just made her constipated. We also tried the gripe water, infacol, detinox ect)

It does get a bot easier as they get older - I wouldnt try soya milk I bought some and then read up on it and decided not to give it to her as research suggests it should be only be used if really needed and with medical advice. Babies fine it hard to digest lactose and the colief is an enzyme that breaks it down xxx
