Ok...so ive got a home birth planned, midwife is happy to go for it.

She came round to my home the other day for my 36 wk apt and told me that women who home birth can get a prescription of dire morphine from the doctor for the labour, she said that i would have to store it at my home and take it back my self if i didnt use it, great i thought!

So... after ringing constantly for half an hour at 8.30 this morning i managed to get an appointment to see the doctor to arrange this prescription, when i asked the doctor he actually LAUGHED at me and told me that if i wanted pain relief i have to have a hospital birth!!!! Also said he couldnt give it because he doesnt know if im over reacting with the pain, then carried on for a further 20 mins giving me the whole home birth isnt safe and my wife had our children in hospital talk.

Needless to say i didnt get the prescription and was told i need to speak to my midwife. (which i thought i already did)

I could of cracked him one there and then the patronizing git!!!

Got home and burst into tears, just wait until i see my midwife!!!

Has any one else had this or did they get the medication ok??

Gosh, he was pretty rude.

His terrible manner of saying it might have done you a favor though, morphine during labor is not recommended anymore because it crosses the placenta and can depress the baby's nervous system.

I'm not in the UK but in the states you don't get any prescriptions to do a home birth - part of the joy IS the freedom from medication! I am sure you can do it! :) Be confident! You sound like a really strong lady so what do you need morphine for? :)

Lol thanks, what gets me is that had i not been told about it, it would of never crossed my mind, i guess its knowing that its there really.

Bloody men doctors a!!

x

I know what you mean, once she brought it up, of course you asked for it and then he acted like an jerk.

Anyone who laughs at a 37 week pregnant woman FOR ANY REASON, let alone doing what your midwife suggested, is pretty much risking a smack. You'd think an obstetrician would be familiar with that rule... :)

I would be making a complaint about him. All this crap about homebirth not being safe is personal opinion and not based on fact or steady research.
Personally I don't think I'd have held back and made it perfectly clear that not only was he being inappropriate but I couldn't give a flying watsit how or where his wife birthed their children

I got a prescription done for my home birth through the hospital. I had to collect the drugs from the labour ward.

My midwife told me that although I could get a prescripion from the GP it wasn't something that she recommended. She said that if that level of pain relief was required then she would be happer if I was in hospital. I too was a little cross about it - but she had been so supportive of a home birth, that the more I thought about it, the more i felt she was right. Gas and air was provded, but I never used it. I would have been cross if she'd worded it like that though. You can do it without drugs :)

It's nice to have the drug options as back up. You might not need them but they are a good safety net.
