I had a Obgyn appointment this morning for the first time in years. (I finally got insurance.) I specifically went to a OBGYN that is supposed to deal with infertility a lot because my hubby and I have been trying for nearly 3 years and I suspected that I have PCOS. I am severely overweight, and I have been eating a 1200 calorie a day diet and exercising for 2 months with no weight loss. The doctor did a trans-vaginal ultrasound and did some blood work. He has confirmed that I have pcos and I saw many cysts on both ovaries.

I asked the doctor what my next step was and he said weight-loss, I explained that I have been tracking my calories and everything and he said the only thing he could do is prescribe me birth control! Wth? I asked about Metformin and he said there is no evidence to support that it actually helps with PCOS.

Now I just feel so broken and confused, I don't want to take birth control. I already track my cycles and BBT so I know that I'm not ovulating. Any advice would be much appreciated.

massive hugs sweety has your doc tested to see if you have thyroid (sorry cant spell it hope you know what i mean) propblems as reserch shows that haveing thyroid troubles can make weight loss very difficult or in some cases impossable its worth asking

I'm so sorry!!! I would look into misswaiting said, I've known people with Tyroid issues and cause of weight gain.

I know you said you are tracking everything you eat so that a very good start. There is this website that I did when I was trying to lose weight called LiveStrong and it really helped. I lost over 50lbs in about a year!!!! I did train for many triathlons and 5K's to keep me focused. But what helped the most is that I put how many lbs I wanted to lose a week and it told me how many calories I should be eating i even entered the excercise I would do. I think there are others as well out there that could help.

Maybe you should get a second opinion? I know it's easier said than done but hang in there and don't give up!! There is a reason and only God knows. Hang in there! hugs

definatly get a second opinion, its the most awfull thing when you have been trying so hard for so long to be fobbed off again and told to go away and loose weight, there are lots of overweight women on metformin to help with the side effects of pcos, they also find it easier to loose weight while taking it.
im not saying this is absolutely what should happen in your case but surely if there is something that can assist with the pcos and weight loss, it should be an option for you to help you move forward to the next step.

dont loose faith in the dieting and the excercise hun, it will eventually start to pay off. GL to you :hugs:

Hi

I have been ttc now for 2 years and i have only just recently been put on metformin, i have had to get my bmi down from 46 to 39 though and its been a struggle to get it, like you i feel like i have been fobbed off most of the time and told to go away and loose the weight, (i have pcos too) and yes its very very hard, so i would definatly get a 2nd opinion hun xx

hi sweetie, first of all, huge :hugs:

i totally agree with misswaiting and PR&TR. just remember, not all dr's are created equal! when we first started having trouble TTC, we both went to a OBY/GN. She was horrible. It took us 7 more months to decide to find a second opinion.... And we found two dr's that are great.

the first thing my dr's did was check my thyroid levels, and i had no signs of having an issue. it is a very simple blood test. fortunately, my levels were normal. it seems like a basic test to do to rule out issues that can cause fertility issues (as well as other issues like weight loss problems etc).

keep up your weight loss routine. you are taking great care of yourself and that can only help! keep it up!
