Jax is nearly 10 wks & has quite bad reflux, Was at hospital a week ago with him for it where consultant gave gaviscon which after 3 days i stopped giving him as it was making him worse & choke!
Anyhoo back to the doctors & they refused to give any other meds saying there wasn't anything they could give him other than gaviscon.. even though the consultant said there was 3 diff meds to try so we left the doctors with nothing but an earlier appointment to go back to the consultant.
Well i bought some sma staydown for reflux & though whats the worst he can do.. be sick again? So yesterday i gave him his first bottle of it .. 4pm & he supped 7oz! Where as the last few wks its been 2oz . He was so hungry its unreal between that 4pm & 11.30 he supped 19oz of the darn stuff & not 1 bit came back up.
He just seemed so hungry that i () cried realising how hungry he must of been, I cant believe so far not 1 bit has come back up & he's calmer, not upset at all, no straining, no arching his back,no crying just my happy placid baby ! He's actually slept during today for the 1st time in god knows because he wasn't straining, I've had so many smiles i keep just hugging him.
I've got this wave of guilt though that i should of changed milk sooner but i didn't know there was sma staydown & the docs even said nooo keep him on sma gold.
Some of you knoe from my facebook ive had a rough time with jaxon lately & now i'm so so pleased to have a smily happy lad!
sma staydown is the absolute bizz !!! (so far anyway))

great news babe...maybe you can even get a good nights sleep too! xxx

What a wonderful story hun, (although there is obviously a sad too that there was such a simple solution and both you and Jaxon have been suffering). This just reaffirms my belief that we should rely on our own instincts more often. You thought it was worth a try but the good old dr's say no don't do that - and guess what, mum was right all along!!!

Really really glad you have your happy smiley boy back :)

Yay for Jax!!! :happydance:
And yay for you too hun, getting those smiles are priceless!
I still havent tried Evie on the comfort milk yet (I think it's along the same lines as the SMA staydown stuff) cos she's not been too bad these last couple of days so gonna wait another few days and see how it goes.. but this gives me hope! :hugs:

you got me considering this now - alexs reflux seems to be beating her again slowly!

i cant believe how useless the doctors were, i think some of them just dont believe its a proper problem. Glad you got it sorted though x

The cow & gate comfort milk isn't for reflux, its mainly for constipation to help the tummy carry on as natural as it should, but that sma staydown is defo working wonders for him. Last night he drank 10oz (took an hour) & he slept 7hours 10pm - 5am !!
During day he's feeding less often but 5oz is average feed now, takes a little longer to sup it but i'm not fussed, he keeps it down that's all im bothered about x

Hi I have given Lexie her first feed of SMA staydown lastnight and this morning although she still fetched a little back and she seemed to have a little tummy ache but overall she seems alot better :)

My question is why do we have to have the water chilled and not at room temp!!!

Do you chill the water?

Thanks Sxxx

^^^^ i read that too - the instructions are very confusing because it also mentions being no cooler than 70 degrees.

I think its a case of reading it again, because each time i read it i get a different answr -i'll have a look once alex is finished her feed.

This stuff has enabled us to drop the gaviscon and we finally have normal nappies! thank u diz xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

argh, thats messed up like. Refridgerate the water BEFORE adding formula. I thought it was said that formula was not sterile? Thats messed up!

Edit: SMA says this
Q2: Why do you have to use chilled water; what about the 70 degree rule?
As SMA Staydown has a precooked corn starch added, it is not possible to make up Staydown with water at 70oC. The Department of Health is aware of this. It is recommended that it is made up using strict hygiene conditions, by practising good handwashing and sterilising techniques, the introduction of bacteria will then be minimised. It is recommended that if possible each feed is made up individually with refrigerated water when required.

Thats what I was thinking too!!!

I read also on there site~

Q4: How do I give night time feeds of Staydown?

You can take the bottle of water out of the fridge before you go to bed and then add the powder to the water when the baby needs a feed. Feed at room temperature.

So therefore the water does not need to be chilled!!!

Also thought I would let you know if you dont already know, that you can get this milk free on prescription, I went along to baby clinlic today and doctor has done a repeat prescription for us:happydance:

Good bye Gavison:happydance: FX

Thanks Ladies:hugs:

Hi am new to site but to answer the question why has water to be chilled.
It's not that the water has to be chilled to make up the feed as u can make it up at room temp. However if u try to make it up at 70 deg it thickens in the bottle same will happen if u heat it up to much. You can slightly heat the milk for feeding i find using bottle warmer on setting 1 best although it is a pain works a treat.
The reason for chilling the water is because u need to rapidly cool boiled water and refrig to stop bacteria forming in the water

It was a miracle for my son too. The change in him was instant! We didn't have refrigerated water for Toby. We uses cooled boiled water and HV said that was fine. You can't use hot water as it makes the milk too thick. It's fairly thick anyway and so Toby was on Dr Browns size 3 teats

Glad your son is happy!!! X

I got cow and gate carobel to add to LO formula as it thickens it and made a big difference as well. Such a relief to find something that helps and it's not colic as HV says!! :flower:

My son has been on sma staydown since he was 4 weeks old and is really good for his reflux!

Prepping his bottles (4No) - I put boiled water in his bottles, rapid cool, then put them in the fridge. When needed I remove from fridge and add the formula then heat it up in a jug of boiling water until it's hot enough for him to drink, never over heat as it's goes lumpy! And always roll the bottle in your hands, never shake as this causes lumps too

fab news, my DD is also on stay down, some doctors will put it on prescription for you!!
