Sorry I hope you don't mind, I have popped over from WTT to just ask you pregnant ladies a question

Does anyone suffer from IBS? if so how did TTC affect it and how is pregnancy affecting it?

After suffering a pretty nasty episode of IBS this weekend, it has made me start worrying as I know I won't be able to take my medication once pregnant

i have verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry bad ibs chick, didnt stop me getting tubbed and apparently in pregnancy you can go one way or the other, it will either subside and settle down or get worse, i have the latter :(

as for medication my doc just put me on immodium, but depending on what medication you already have you may be able to use it after the first trimester (check with docs)

immodium or peppermint tea is all you can take.

nah the registrar at the hosp prescribed me some tablets which he said would be safe to use their called metoclopramide im starting them tomorow so dunno if they work yet ;)

I was one of the 'it gets worse' people. Saying that, it went at about 24 weeks I think so maybe I just needed to hit a higher hormone level. I have to say, the worst was the hormone surges (mainly the trimester tranisitions). When I went from first to second trimester I was really ill for about 3 or 4 weeks. The doctor gave me codine for the 2nd - 3rd tri transition but I didn't need it fortunately. I've been using fybogel for general pregnancy constipation and it seems to have made the world of difference.

i'v suffered with IBS since i was 11, it flares up from time to time, but nothing the doctor gave me would help me any, so i learned what foods to avoid like what made me have an upset stomache and what would help with not being able to go, the hardest part is the pain if i make a mistake by eating something that didnt agree with me, or the rushing home to make the loo etc. during pregnancy mine gets worse but i still wont take anything for it as its never worked in the past so i try and get on with it. sorry i cant be of more help.

I was diagnosed with IBS 7 yrs ago. We fell pregnant first month of trying. I am not on meds for my IBS and control it with diet (haha) I have found since falling pregnant my IBS has been pretty well controlled. Recently I have found BH pains make me need to go to the toliet. I have spoken to my MW and she says she has never heard of anyone else having the same problems, but she is not surprised.

I fear my BH making me 'go' mean I will definitely poo during labour. I am trying to get used to the idea, but I am not overly happy about doing it in front of the MW's and H, especially on the delivery bed.

i seem to be a 'better in pregnancy' person... although that said, ive had hyperemesis so havent really been eating much, i found the colpermin capsules fab, and as far as i know they are pregnancy safe.. i was prescribed the metoclopromide for my hyperemesis at one point.. it didnt do much for me tho so went back to the cyclizine

Oh and to say, we weren't actively trying but we weren't preventing either and caught in the first month. I was on Mebeverine and stopped taking it when we started having unprotected sex and the doctor told me it was the right thing to do. However, I then saw another doctor and he said it probably wouldn't have been the end of the world. The problem is that none of the drugs have been tested on pregnant women (cos obviously no-one wants to take the risk!) so they can't actually say what, if anything, would happen so have to air on the side of caution.

I've had IBS since I was 14 and I dont take any medication for it. I know the trigger foods and I try to avoid them altho I do tend to give in to them once in a while but I really pay for it!
As for my IBS in pregnancy, with my first I really had a bad time with constipation, but I seem to fairly ok so far with this one *touch wood* I've had the odd bout of constipation, a few uncomfortable IBS cramps and occasional "softies" but nothing really out of the ordinary.
I will say tho that my wind output has sky rocketed! I used to be a good farter and burper before, but I'm 100% worse now! It's like the wind I get when I'm on my period. Deadly

i went to the docs last summer with pains, she thought it was IBS but wanted me to have a pelvic scan to get checked out, waited until Jan and didn't hear from her so went back and she booked me in for the scan, my pains had started to go, didn't think anything of it, then my period didn't show and i found out i was pregnant

asked another doc if i should still go to the scan and he said that he didn't see why i shouldn't

but because baby is now there they couldn't see anything

since learning i've little sproglet inside me now i've not had the pains that were put down to possibly having IBS, the only pains i get now are stretching ones which i much prefer

before i fell pregnant i had read that symptoms of IBS can disappear during pregnancy, so now i dread the weeks after giving birth and hoping that the pains stay away otherwise i get to have another lovely internal ultrasound! (it wasn't too bad the first time as i got to see baby, but the next time it'll be just all me inner bits :( )

its weird, when people say they control it by diet i find that hard and its touch and go, for example a salad can really set my ibs off... running to the toilet in the middle of asda 10 mins after eating it (only to find the toilets have people in and i cant go when theres people there, its loud pmsfl) whereas a really spicey curry will be the only thing that will settle it

i too have the fear of it flaring up while im in labor, when i get the cramps i end up rolling about sometimes from them and am wondering how to tell the difference between contractions and cramps lol

has anyone been given a reason as to what may have triggered their ibs? i mean has anyone had investigations done? my consultant asked me if i had and i havent it was my gp that diagnosed me and stuck me on immodium

thankyou so much for all your replys, I am still suffering from a nasty bout of IBS, anything remotely carb related is setting it off big time, i think i need to quit eating anything for 2 - 3 days to give my insides time to recover!

I have got some peppermint cap's, i am going to give those a try as i have been hammering my IBS medication recently and really want to cut down before we start TTC so we are gonna try other things to control it ready for then

ive had ibs since i was 10! And tbh its calmed down since being pregnant have to take my fybogel everyday and watch what im eating etc but all in all im ok!!! xxx
