Ladies please help me because i'm having a craving for the first time ever lol.

I really want some raspberry ripple ice cream so bought some before from morrisons but it says its soft scoop.

Now I know we are told to avoid Mr Whippy and Mcflurry because they are soft serve & we don't know how often or well the machines are used and we can't have home made ice cream because of the raw egg but would soft scoop ice cream from the freezer in the supermarket be ok (the ones in tubs from morrisons, tescos or asda etc)? The ingredients don't mention it contains egg but everywhere I have looked on the internet it only mentions avoiding soft serve ice cream from Mr Whippy & Mcdonalds so i'm confiused and getting annoyed because I really want the ice cream that is in my freezer but too scared to eat ha. I also know that normal supermarket ice cream is ok but the one I bought specifically says soft scoop on the lid.

Thanks

Soft scoop is fine its soft serve eg mcds that is bad

Thanks you so much. I've sat here all night wanting this and it's a bit too late now so will have it tomorrow. I didn't know there was a difference between soft scoop and soft serve so how thick am I lol

Why do you have to avoid soft serve ice cream?

I was told to avoid soft serve (mr whippy & macdonalds etc because we don't know how often the machines are cleaned so they could be full of bacteria.

It's so confusing

I've eaten mcflurrys and I'm still here and baby fine!

I think as long as the machines are regularly cleaned it shouldn't be a problem. I don't think I'd get soft serve from an ice cream van though.

I'm sure they're pretty strict about the cleanliness of Maccy D's machines. My step brother used to work in one (a McDonald's, not a mcflurry machine) and they got spot checked for kitchen cleanliness all the time!

I used to work at macsdonalds and i would strongly advise against eating shakes or flurries!!!! There are rules but there not often checked. Theres cleaning methods for all equiptment but theres also quicker ways to do it!!

Its the listeria risk - so theres every chance you'll be fine but for sake of an ice cream i would risk it

Every time i'm pregnant i crave ice cream, especially the whippy kind! And for all 4 pregnancies i've had loads of it from various locations and i've never had a problem. I think some rules are made to be broken ;) lol Sometimes these restrictions are just a little over the top for my liking, i'm pretty sure they just tell you these things even though the risk is absolute minimum just to cover their backs.

I had no idea that I 'shouldn't' be eating ice cream from the ice cream van! :haha:

I don't think anyone's making rules to 'cover their backs'. There is a risk of certain foods - for example soft, whipped Ice cream - can contain harmful bacteria which could be dangerous to unborn babies. Yes, it's a small risk, but many people would rather not take even the smallest risk for something like an ice cream. The professionals tell us about the risks because that is their job and they would be badly letting us down if they didn't. You can absolutely choose which advice to follow, though.

As for your 'soft serve' supermarket ice cream - enjoy! No risks there as far as I'm aware, so long as it hasn't been melted and re-frozen.

Iv never been told about the soft serve ice cream danger but I did always wonder if I was supposed to be eating it so I must have read it somewhere or something before to put that doubt in my mind

Mr whippy type ice-cream is fine IMHO. If you want to get paranoid about listeria you also need to avoid:
- Cold meat
- Leftovers
- Salad
- pre-made sandwiches
- Butter/marg!

I asked my friend whose a national MaccyDs manager for the "dirty" on their cleanliness procedures and he said he would stake his life on them! The ice-cream and shake cleaning procedures are so stringent with no shortcuts, only performed by the store manager etc. They apparently get those things cleaner than you could hope to sterilise your kitchen at home.

Funny how people regularly will get a bad tum from their local Chinese/curry house and keep going back without concern. I've never know anyone, whose known anyone, whose known anyone who got sick from a McFlurry.

I personally have been and will be chowing down! :)

Im sorry but your friend is talking crap, for so many reason:
- store managers are well and truely gone from work hours before the shake machine is even turned off never mind emptied
- its a very messy and wet job which yet again a store manager wouldnt do
- yes there are rules - no they are not stuck to!!!
- there are procedures to clean it its very easy to bypass steps - it will look clean but it isnt
- no one at mcds cares, they just want it to look good so they can go home

basically when you clean it its scrub rinse sanatise - but if you want it to be done quick you can just rinse it and unless you wait till the machine is back on for an ice cream sample theres no way of knowing if its bacteria free just rinse it it will look like it has been scrubbed and sanatised but its no way near clean

Wow ok that's quite a strong response. I did actually try argue with him and say exactly as you do - nobody who works at Maccy Ds cares etc. etc. But then again nobody who packages and sells stuff in a supermarket cares so technically I shouldn't buy or consume anything that I haven't grown/slaughtered/prepared myself then must discard the leftovers immediately afterwards.
Whether my friend is talking bollox or not, I still think its safe enough and would by no means consider myself reckless.

I think people can get too wound up about these guidelines meanwhile the stress they cause themselves is far more toxic than the myriads of hazards they are trying to avoid. But I have bigger issues to spend my worry time on while pregnant than ice-cream.

Oh ya i total agree that its probs ok. And yes in sone store they will be clean i just dont think its worth it myself for ice cream

I know what you mean though we'd do nothing for 9 minths if followed everything but ibthinks it because i know how mcds works that makes me stay well clear of it. I guess ignorance is bliss lol

Aaah I see. And I know how the meat manufacturing process and supermarket regimes work which is why I speculate anything from there must be at least as unsafe. Guess we all have to be ignorant about something or we'd go loony.

I have eaten mcd's ice cream and I have a very happy baby! It's not the ice cream it's the cleanliness of the machines, in which case I only have it when I know they are clean and have a good reputation.

Soft serve itself is not bad :dohh:

Let's all just wrap ourselfs up in cotton wool and lock the door in an air tight room for 9 months 'just incase' jeeezzz

What I dont get is that listeria is pretty serious. Is has something like a 20% mortality rate in adults so why is everyone who isn't pregnant, not freaking out over this stuff all the time anyway? If these things were so terribly hazardous we'd be advised not to eat them all the time.

I'm sure that f you wanted to, you could find a reason not to eat most stuff while you're pregnant ... Nothing with caffeine, avoid preservatives, only eat organic incase of pesticides. You'd drive yourself mad.

As long as some logic and common sense is in place i don't see the problem.
