Birth story
Our beautiful girl Imogen was due on the 21st May and she was born on the 4th June. Right from the start I was keen on having a home birth but after talking about it, we decided it was best to have my first labour in hospital but as calmly as possible. We decided on a water birth with as little pain relief as possible. I ended up having a c section and the birth was very traumatic for me.
Tuesday 8th May 38+1
Went to see the midwife as usual, Id been having pains across my tummy, back and hips and the BH were getting quite painful. The midwife said she thought things were happening and shed be surprised to see me the following week! We got excited but stayed calm. We ended up going to full term, made us laugh because we said that Imogen must take after both of us with being awkward!
Tuesday 22nd May 40+1
Saw the midwife again, I was still getting all the pains but by this point I was convinced it was going to come to induction. The midwife offered me a sweep but I turned it down, Imogen was still back to back and I really wanted her to turn before we tried anything.
Tuesday 29th May 41+1
Another midwife appointment. The midwife did an internal, I was 1.5cm dilated and soft but my cervix was too far back for her to do a sweep. I was a little disappointed but I just hoped it would give Imogen time to turn. It was the last appointment with the midwife as the next appointment would be the induction! We were booked in for the induction on 1st June which gave us a few days to get things going naturally.
Friday 1st June 41+4 - Induction booked for 9pm
I didnt sleep well on the Thursday because of nerves, I woke up at 8ish and woke Mike up, had breakfast and then we went through everything we had to do in the day to be ready for the induction. My main worry was Mike leaving me at the hospital, he could stay while I was having the induction done but then hed be leaving until 10am, Mike was doing his best to keep me calm but I was getting really upset at the thought of being without Mike.
We were sat doing the list of things to do and the labour ward rang to say theyd postponed the induction for 24 hours due to the labour ward being busy, typical! The way I saw it was thats 24 hours to go into labour naturally so we tried all the old wives tales.
Saturday 2nd June 41+5 Induction booked for 9pm (again!)
Had another rubbish night of sleep, woke up at 6ish and Mike made me breakfast for 7.30, again he was doing his best to keep me calm but I was getting really upset and I was hoping the labour ward was going to ring to change the time of the induction. I started thinking that maybe I shouldnt have the induction and I should just let things happen naturally.
Labour ward rang at 9.45, this time to see if I could get in asap to start the induction. I didnt even have time to be nervous! Mike rang his parents to see if they could drive us to the hospital, rang my parents to let them know what was going on and he got everything ready while I had a quick shower and got dressed. I was nervous but happy as at least Mike could stay with me until 8pm and I hoped by then the induction would be working
10.15am We got to the hospital and straight away I was given an internal and the propess was put in. I had to lie down for half hour and then we sat on the ward, went for some food and a walk around the hospital. The midwife we had was absolutely lovely.
2pm I was starting to have pains and the BH were getting more painful. Id had paracetamol so all I could do to help with the pain was walk around and chat to Mike to take my mind off it. I had 2 baths where Mike sat with me to see if the water helped.
5pm I was in quite a lot of pain, starting to get stressed over Mike leaving me and all I wanted to do was go home.
7pm I spoke to the midwife and said I wanted to stop the induction, I was crying and getting quite stressed that Mike would be leaving me at 8.
7.40pm Had an internal and was told my cervix hadnt changed at all but since I was having painful contractions I could go onto labour ward where Mike would be staying with me. We were both so happy about Mike staying that I didnt really care about not making any progress.
8.20pm Met the two midwives who were going to be looking after me, again they were lovely and I felt full of confidence that I would be okay. We went into the delivery room and then got in the bath to help with the pains. Stayed in the bath for over an hour and had Mike pouring water over my back where the pain was worse. When I got out the bath, one of the midwives sat with us for a while and we had a nice chat. She showed us techniques of natural pain relief and showed Mike how he can help me, I think he felt a bit lost before because he hated seeing me in pain when he couldnt help. The midwives were there constantly throughout the night when we needed them.
11pm The pain was getting very bad and I was struggling so I was given codeine and I used the birthing ball.
Sunday 3rd June
12.45am Got back in the bath and again Mike poured water and my back and hips to help.
2.15am I was still in the bath and having intense pain, I dont know why but I told Mike to get the midwife now, something felt different. Midwife came to see me, I was lying in the bath crying in agony begging her to help. She told me I needed to get out the bath so she could do something, took them a few minutes but between Mike and the midwife, they got me standing so they could dry me. I felt a funny feeling and then water started coming out of me. I knew what it was but I was still really scared.
The midwife told Mike later that she had a feeling I was getting close so they advised me to have a bath because I coped well in there. They knew as soon as I was losing it in there, then things were getting close.
2.30am I was examined and told I was only 4-5cm dilated, the amount of pain I was in I was convinced I was close to pushing! I asked what sort of pain relief I could have and they told me the options, I went for pethidine and gas & air.
4.45am The pain was far too much, so I asked for an epidural
6am I was given the test dose
6.30am I was much more relaxed, the epidural had worked fantastic. I was on a monitor to make sure both Immy and I were okay and everything was fine. Imogen was very active!
8.30am The midwives had finished their shift, they did an internal to see if I was close because theyd stay if I was but still there wasnt much change.
I had a catheter in and I was being given loads of fluids through the drip but for some reason the catheter bag wasnt filling. I went the whole day not having a pee but no one seemed worried!
We spent the Sunday in the delivery room, eating and chatting. I was starting to get a lot of pain in my hips so I used g&a to help with that. The Midwife found that my front waters had not broken, so did it with an in and out. The day flew by, its only when reading my journal notes that a midwife did for me that Ive realised it was nearly 24 hours until anything else happened! I felt like a few hours to me. By this point Mike still hadnt slept, he didnt want to leave me.
8.30pm The new shift of midwives started and I was examined again, I had made good progress but sadly I dont have it written down anywhere. The catheter was changed and the new one was filling very quickly. They think the old one had moved from where it should be.
The pain was still really bad so I spent the night using g&a.
Monday 4th June
12am I had an internal and was told I was fully dilated but we were giving it 2 hours for Imogen to move down.
2am Time to push! I couldnt really feel the contraction so Mike and the midwife told me when to push. They were both shocked at how well I did with pushing, no one had to advise me on what to do and I was definitely pushing hard!
2.30am A consultant came to check and checked when I was pushing. Imogen hadnt moved an inch. I was gutted.
3am I was checked again and Imogen still hadnt moved so they said we have to get to theatre.
I dont know the times of everything from now but they got me into theatre and I was given a spinal. It was awful, I was more scared than I ever have been in my life and I was shaking a lot. I remember having trouble breathing and being given oxygen and then an injection.
They tried to find her position but she was so far stuck so couldnt get her with forceps so they said we have to go to c section. Whilst preparing me they thought Imogen had turned at the last minute, and told me that they would use forceps, I relaxed a bit, but only briefly as after a second opinion they found out she hadnt moved. They went ahead with the c section.
4.47am Our little girl was born
I lost a litre of blood and it was the scariest experience thats ever happened. In recovery Mike said I was yellow and shaking enough to make him think I could be fitting. I dont remember much as I was in and out of sleep.
Although it was awful at the end, it was still amazing as I now have the most beautiful, perfect little girl lying in my arms.
First picture of us together, I'd just done the first feed and was quite proud
