How do you know when to go to the next level of teat size?

I use Dr Brown bottles and as LO is only 7 weeks have been using level 1. Do I just go up to level 2 when he's 3 months or might he want them sooner and how would I know?

my daughter is nearly 4 months and we have only gone onto using teat no. 2. We did try when she turned 3 months but she was spilling the milk everywhere and taking in too much air as she was trying to gulp too quick so we returned to no. 1's. she then soon started getting frustrated with her bottle at feeding times and turning her head side to side so we tried the no.2's a week ago and she has been fine.

hope this helps. x

The usual signs you should go up a teat size can include baby taking longer to feed (feeds should take about 10-20 mins) and falling asleep half way through feeding. xx

Good advice from skunkpixie and remember the ages listed are just guidelines, not set in stone.

Yes, I agree there. DD2 went up to medium flow (2m+) at 5 weeks old and has never needed a faster flow, still uses mediums now! xx

i recently switched because Ari was getting frustrated.

Is this true even for a 6 week old? Because my 6 week old takes 30-45 minutes to eat a 3 oz bottle in the night and usually the last 2 oz is a "dream feed" because he is pretty much sleeping.
I wonder if going up to the medium nipple will get him to eat more and in return sleep longer? (He currently wakes every 1-3 hours).

I dont know whether it would help with the sleeping longer etc, but give the medium size teat a go to help him drink more efficiantly. Sometimes when moving up a teat size they can dribble milk slighlty but aslong as baby isnt choaking, spluttering and getting bad wind, persevere. xxx

Louie went from size 1 to 2 within a day and then to size 3 within a week.
You know when its time to change when;

a) They're sucking too hard
b) lots of wind
c) falling asleep before finishing a bottle from the exhaustion of sucking

he's only 6 weeks and already on size 3. Sizes by ages are just a guideline- as with clothing and milestones!

My little one just went up a size and he's 7 weeks. They noticed at daycare (I don't use bottles at home) that he seemed to eat a few oz then get bored/lazy and then want more a little while later. He seemed confused at first (drooling it out instead of swallowing) when we went to the next size but then he realized that he could eat more with ease and he's getting through twice as much in a sitting now.

I have a 5 week old baby who has reflux and has a floppy larynxs. I a using Dr brown bottles which so far have been fab but i am finding that the level 1 is to slow for him it takes and 20 mins to have 2oz, and then stops sucking or falls asleep. I have today put him on level 2 but it seems a tiny bit to fast. Will he get used to it and keep him on level 2 or should i change him back to level 1? I a hoping he wil get used to it cause it does go down alot quicker than the level 1!
