Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of being induced with their 2nd child after having a c-section for their 1st child? My first was born by emergency section due to fetal distress, I was fully dialated and pushing for 45 minutes when they decided to do the section.

This time, we are hoping for a vbac, i was booked for a section at 38 weeks as baby was breech but she turned! my due date is tomorrow, I have had a sweep on Saturday and another today. They have booked me in for induction next week but I've heard its risky to induce when you have had a section before, in terms of rupture.

I'm seeing the consultant Thursday but wondered if anyone on here had experienced it themselves? I realise that once I start the induction process there's no turning back, and it could end up in an emergency section, so not sure whether I should ask for an elective or not?

Any advise greatly receieved :)

i saw a consultant when i was pregnant with my second. He said that induction after c section wasnt great and he didnt want me to go through it, he wrote no induction all over my notes. I only had a section the first time to get baby out so was an ideal candidate for a vbac. They were worried about baby number2 not growing so one consultant said he would induce me but there was a 30 percent sucess rate...when he examined me i wasnt favourable for induction at all so had another c section, ( v glad i did- it was right for me, i couldnt have gone through another emergency section)

If i were in that position, i would probably want to avoid both.
Is there a reason why they want to induce? Surely if they think induction is okay, then awaiting labor on it's own would be too?
I would probably have a fear over getting induced after previous CS for the reason you stated. ...though i have read that the old fashioned foleybulb is actually pretty good at getting things going, but obviously the drip is more popular. If the foley bulb was an option, that would have extremly minimual risk (only im comparison to pitocin)

hope your consultation brings some good words of wisdom. best of luck in whichever route you decide to take :dust:

I had an emergency c section with ds1 due to fetal distress and I was induced at 40+8 with ds2. They tried two pessaries and then broke my waters but I was not making any progress so was put on a syntocinon drip but ds2 didn't like it and his heart rate was dropping and I still wasn't making any progress so I ended up with a second emergency c section. It wasn't a terrible experience (not as bad as my first) and I wanted to give my body the chance to deliver naturally.

A midwife at my hospital told me its not very safe to induce using the drip after having a section, so she said next time I would probably have to hope to go into labour naturally or have an elective c section. To be honest I wouldn't want to be induced again as my birth experience wasn't pleasant and baby really didn't like it and heartrate was all over the place so that's why I had an EMCS. I wouldn't personally want the worry that comes with induction again so would opt for an elective c section. But that's just me personally.

And I've just realised that my point is probably moot as this thread was started a month ago lol, sorry! Hope everything went ok whatever you decided in the end!

I was induced at 36+4 weeks due to my son stopping growing at 32 weeks. My contractions were happening to often and my son was getting stressed because of it so also had to have an emergency C-section I have read that once you have section you can't be induced again because its too much of a risk to the mother and baby.

This is a old post so my answer won't help the OP but it is a topic that comes up a bit so I'll share my personal experience of induction after c-section.

I had DS1 by planned c-section and then I went overdue with DS2 and my waters broke and his head was very low but the contraction were not strong or regular and not much was happening. I had a sweep and things picked up a little but not enough so due to risk of infection from my waters going I was induced. Long story short is after 4 hours of labour on the drip I was in agony and the epidural wasn't working at all and my bladder hurt so much and I could feel myself dying and the doctor agreed to an EMCS in part because I knew something was very wrong even though there was no outward sign of rupture or anything, getting me into theatre was sped up when DS2 showed major signs of distress. When the surgeon opened me up he found DS2 outside of my uterus; my uterus, vagina and bladder had ruptured, I had lost a fair bit of blood, organs were in places they shouldn't be and DS2 was pulling at them, my urethra was crushed, and me and DS2 were apparently minutes away from dying. Recovery is slower than with a average c-section and involves me wearing a catheter for a month. I can't say if it happened by chance or because DS2 was a big baby or due to induction or even a mix of those things.

With or without induction the chance of even minor rupturing is rare although induction statistically a slightly increases the risk. In most cases things run much smoother than they did for me. If I knew this would happen to me I would have had a repeat section but I based my decision to attempt a VBAC on the statistics which the majority of people fit into.
