Infantile hemangioma

Thanks ladies. It only seems to bother her when we apply the cream, otherwise she's totally fine, thank goodness.

I wouldn't put any creams on it I think they might make it worse. The dr should give you that gel that Jessica is talking about. I started it yesterday.

I haven't read all the replies but my daughter has one on her face near her mouth which ulcerated. She was given propranolol from 3 months until 30 months. There weren't any side affects and it did help to repair and shrink the strawberry mark. However she does still have it and she will be 3 in march. People told us it would be gone by the time she was 3 but this is obviously not the case even with propranolol! We took her off it as it had stopped working on the highest dose.

Trying to upload pictures! This is Madeleine at 2 and a half after treatment stopped

Her doctor told us to keep applying the cream in conjunction with the propranolol. It's just a zinc oxide cream to create a barrier between the hemangioma and her excretions.

I'm definitely going to ask about the stuff Jessica was talking about, though she seemed to LIKE the propranolol this morning.

And this one is at 6 months ish after treatment started.

The healing of the ulceration was almost immediate and then it was gradual. Every time the dose got upped as she got bigger there would be a marked difference and then it would settle down again.

Hi ladies

Just wanted to offer some reassurance and give you my experiences.

My dd was born with a strawberry birthmark on her eyelid. It grew significantly and my partner and I took her to the GP out of concern 5 times an was told to stop worrying, leave it to grow out etc. it then pushed her eyelid down and outbf concern for her vision, we refused to leave the surgery until a referral was made to a specialist. I won't detail the fight we had to get to that point but by the time the appt with the paediatric consultant, we felt as though we would be frowned upon and pushed aside yet again...how wrong we were!

The consultant was fantastic and agreed my dd should have been under her care when we first requested it at approx 4 weeks old (she was 7 months when we 1st seen consultant). Anyway, we commenced her on the propranolol the following day. She was admitted to hospital for the day to ensure there were no adverse reactions etc. everything went fine so she was prescribed 7mls propranolol twice a day.

She started the treatment in April 2012 and finished it in January 2013 an her birthmark has all but disappeared and we are over the moon with the results. Prior to treatment, it was the size of a 5p coin and very raised. It stopped growing immediately and regressed very quickly until totally disappearing!

We obviously had lots of concerns with the treatment given its a beta blocker and it was a new medication for this purpose so no long term studies into children etc but due to the location an impact it was having in terms of causing eyelid to droop, we trusted out consultant and went with if, and I'm so glad we did.

The only side affect occurred after around 7 months of treatment when she developed terrible insomnia. A real nightmare but has corrected itself very quickly now the treatment has stopped.

Beta blockers for small children sound very severe and intense but I would agree to it again in a heartbeat if I had other babies with the same issue. It's been great for us and our dd. good luck with whatever treatment you go with :flower:

Hi ladies. My little girl has had a 'strawberry mark' on the side of her head that first appeared at about 6-7weeks. It was flat and small but is now getting bigger and redder. I've read that it should shrink by time she's 3 but I'm just wondering now if I should see a dr? It doesn't bother her in anyway. She also has a little one on her bottom lip but that hasn't changed size much.

Here's a pic

:haha:

Don't you know I use Tylenol for everything? Hemangiomas, bonked heads, cutting her nails...

My little boy has in under his toe of all places hasn't grown or gotten darker in weeks and when his feet are cold it turns pink/White his cousin has one on her face was quiet large when she was a baby but not it's almost gone all by itself and she's 4 now try not to worry Hun just keep an eye in it n watch how it grows

C1403-are you in the uk? My daughteris 9 weeks and hers is a similar size to yours. I've seen 2 paeds ( 1 a dermatologist the other we are seeing for her reflux) both will do nothing for her mark as it's cuurently cosmetic and not near eyes or airways etc.
If you do decide to see someone please let me know how you go? I worry about the risksof treatment ( as my girl isn't in as great a need like some babes on this thread) but also worry aboutjust doing nothing tbh.

Hi, yes I am in the UK..My LO also has reflux....I've not mentioned the marks to my dr but I will at an appointment next week. I doubt they'd do anything tbh as its on her head and her lip one is tiny. I'll let you know what they say x

Hey ladies, just a quick update for those of you looking into the propranolol...

We had a doctor's appointment today to just see if there was any progress being made since she's been put on the propranolol (2 weeks ago). My OH and I have been thinking that we've noticed it getting lighter and smaller but kind of convinced ourselves it was wishful thinking.

But her doctor took a look and confirmed that it is DEFINITELY looking better and inverting already which is a great sign!! In just 2 weeks for there to be a noticeable difference it's pretty exciting. :D

So in my opinion it's definitely worth giving the propranolol a shot. :)
