Inflammation, food sensitivities, etc

A year ago, I don't think I would have gone to a naturopath and written a post about food sensitivities. Am I one of those people so desperate for an answer that I'll grasp at anything? Maybe. But anyway, this is what I've been up to, and I think it's interesting, and maybe promising.

Basically, I've had some kind of undiagnosed inflammation for as long as I can remember. My skin is always red and I break into a rash at ANY stimulus - dust, my purse strap, etc. Doctors in the past have tried to identify the stimuli (too many to pinpoint) or just treat the problem topically, and I've always wanted to get to the root of why my body does this. And lately, of course, I've become convinced that the same inflammation would probably be a problem in getting pregnant. So I made an appointment with a naturopath.

She did a food sensitivities test which came back to show sensitivities to basically everything I eat, which indicated not that I should stop eating, but that my body is in a reactive state - leaky gut syndrome (which coincidentally I just saw on Dr. Oz). It stems from some kind of intestinal imbalance, maybe from a parasite (we're testing), or maybe just because.

To treat it, I've been taking a probiotic for a few weeks and I already see a difference in my skin. There are a few other things I'm going to take to help heal the leaky gut thing, too, and she's confident that once we fix that, I'll see improvements in my skin, energy, aches and pains, and perhaps it'll also let me get pregnant. She said what I'd suspected, which is that if my body is constantly in this reactive state where it'll attack whatever I eat or touch, then it would attack an embryo as well. My immune system needs to be in balance before it would be able to support a pregnancy.

So, in the quest to control the uncontrollable, I feel like I'm doing something positive for my body. It'll be great to get my skin under control, even if it doesn't help me get pregnant, but I feel hopeful that it will.

Has anyone else explored this?

I've never seen a natropath yet but I've been thinking about it. Diet is so critical. I have a child that I believe has leaky gut. Food makes all difference in quality of life.

I think you are definitely on the right track! This can't hurt might help! I bet it will help!

I have inflammation in my body (confirmed by blood tests), and I'm 100% sure it's in my gut somewhere. Wheat and gluten are BY FAR the biggest causes of leaky gut. I would definitely suggest cutting gluten out completely. I did not quite a month ago and I can already see a difference. I wish you tons of luck!

Thank you for sharing! What blood tests did you have? I have food sensitivities that I've noticed (sugar, dairy) but I haven't had any bloodwork done. Maybe I can request a few tests.

The one that showed inflammation was called "C reactive protein". My TSH was also a little high which can be affected by gluten if you have a sensitivity. I'd request some just to see what's going on inside.

Oh wow, I didn't realize that could affect TSH levels. Mine used to be high, and then I modified my diet (more protein, less carbs) and now it's in normal range. My doctor chalked it up to "TSH levels can change, we'll keep watching it." But I wonder if reducing gluten in my diet had anything to do with it.

I'll (sadly) see what happens with less wheat and gluten in my life.

Thanks for weighing in, ladies!

I have stage 4 endo which is an inflammation problem. Most who have endo have a intolerance to wheat & dairy. I started trying to follow the endo diet which eliminates inflamitory foods. I have to say it was hard because there was not a lot of info/recepies. I needed something easier so I started researching ways of eating.

The short end if the story I found the Paleo diet which has been fantastic! It is an antinflammatory way of eating. Although the diet is popular with those wanting to loose weight and extreme exercise enthusiast it also has a huge following of those who have healed their bodies from various inflammatory / autoimmune conditions.

There is a great forum that talks about many of these issues. Here is a link to it.

I never saw a neuropath but did agree to attend a yoga detox class early last year with a friend. Basically it cut out all caffeine, processed foods, refined sugars and other toxins (like nicotine, alcohol etc). The first week all we were allowed to eat was a dish called kitcheri to reduce inflammation in the body as the body detoxed out all the garbage that was in it. The following week was all smoothies avoiding certain fruit and veg. Following week weeks added back in certain foods. I drank a lot of water, infused and plain as well as tea and I took a supplement called Triphala to aid in the detox process.

I too suffered from many skin issues (was always just blamed on my fair skin) as well as chronic fatigue, hormonal imbalances and IBS.

The first week was H*LL. I had terrible headaches above all else and it was really hard not to cheat. By the second though I was feeling better than I had in more than a decade. Transitioning from the detox back to regular eating I still avoid processed foods and refined anything as much as possible and my body is functioning so much better. As someone else mentioned I eat largely paleo. Although much of what I buy still comes from a grocery store, I try to follow the rule that if I couldn't grow or harvest it at home I don't eat it. Fruit and veg (fresh, frozen or dried - no canned unless I can it myself), only whole proteins (poultry, fish, venison, limited pork and beef) very very little dairy (we are the only species that consumes lactation products from other species...I believe there's something to that) and even less in the way of carbs (save for things like steel cut oats, flax, quinoa and beans).

Save for when I'm pumping myself full of infertility hormones my skin and body don't break out anymore. My IBS has completely disappeared and my belly isn't painfully bloated up anymore. I used to get pains in my liver area when I slept at night and that's gone. I have loads more energy too.

I can only imagine it would help everyone with their ttc efforts as well as with health in general!

There's lots of "cheats" if you're looking to cut out refined carbs - that was really hard for me too! Making pasta out of veg is my favorite one :)
