I'm exclusively BF, but Bella will have to have a bottle on Tuesdays and I would like her to be able to have a bottle so that DH and I could go on a date. My mom tried to give her a bottle yesterday and she wanted NOTHING to do with it. I had fed her a little before so she was completely starving and freaking out about it. Any advice??

Try a different bottle...

I use the playtex drop-ins. Sharlotte had to have a bottle this last weekend and it worked great for her, she didn't like the nuk ones though...

I've been meaning to try the Adiri though, they are available at toysrus.

Marg, we need to talk to Wobbles and change the thingy under your user name from Chat Happy Bnb user to BnB Lactation Specialist!!!

Can't help I'm afraid, Kaya won't take a bottle at all. My sister says it's just a matter of persevering and getting the OH to try it.

We use the Avent Airflex bottles and haven't had any problems - they allow the baby to control the flow of milk like they would on the breast, and allow air into the bottle so that they don't need to release suction on the teat. Make sure she isn't in a place that she would normally associate with breastfeeding, being given the bottle by someone else. Get them to stay calm and persevere with it.

It might be best to try her on a small amount in a bottle not long after a feed so she's not too hungry and hopefully won't get so frustrated x

:laugh2: Totally agree!! Your advice is awesome Marg!

My son preferred the plain ole' Medela bottles that came with my pump- I mean, there is nothing special about them (which is why I was shocked he liked them). He also did okay with Dr. Brown's- and many people I have talked to preferred these (Babies R Us in the States). He would NEVER take a bottle from me- only others. And the first few times my hubby tried it, he refused. I think it took maybe 1/2 dozen attempts before he would take the bottle- so don't give up. Squirting some of the milk from the bottle nipple may also help so they figure out it's still the good stuff in there!

I use playtex nurser with the drop in liners. Do not try to give a bottle if they are really hungry because they wont be willing to try it. Hope it works out well for you! I give 1oz every night through a bottle so he could get used to it by the time I go back to work (2 weeks from now).

yeah =D> would be great, not sure if they are able to do this???

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think we just need to try some more. She won't even put the nipple in her mouth. She won't close her mouth around it, I think that's the problem. She acts like it's poison or something. She does the same thing with the pacifier.

what about trying her with cup feeding? may be worth a try

it's most likely at her age, that she still didn't loose her tongue reflex, where the tongue automatically gets rid of everything coming into the mouth in order to prevent choking!

maybe that's why?

Seth had his first bottle tonight and had no probs, although I was talking to a lady yesterday who was having problems getting her baby onto a bottle, and the HV told her that her baby would be able to drink from a bottle, but would just prefer not to so maybe to try a different bottle. We have been using Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles (I think they're called) and had no problems.

xxx

The only problem I had with the bottle was trying to stop his head turning towards the breast. Everytime i lay him in my arms the head would turn completely sideways.

I hope you come right!

That's what Sam does too. Stroking his other cheek used to work to get him to turn his head but doesn't any more! He's ok once he's started drinking from it though x

Maybe she has nipple confusion?

It's nipple confusion, but not that way, she's confused and doesn't know what to do. I went and bought the bottle somebody on here recommend, I can't remember the name of it, we are going to try it today. I finally found a paci she will take so maybe now this bottle will be the trick!
