We've been struggling with names for our baby girl for a while now. A lot of the names i like have been used by family/friends already or are associated with things/people we'd rather not be reminded of. We eventually settled on Isabelle (nn Belle) but it's so popular at the moment its put me off. One of the names we keep coming back to is Iris, as it has a special meaning for us being the name of our wedding song and also its connection to the rainbow, etc. BUT...

Is it too old-ladyish? Can you think of any bad nicknames or connotations?

Also, can you help us think of a good nickname for Iris, and suggest some middle names? :flower:

Thanks in advance.

I like the name and the song. It is slightly old ladyish but isn't that coming back in now?

I know a little girl called Iris. I think all the flower names are lovely!

Thanks everyone. Has anyone got any suggestions for middle names?

My nan was called Iris and id love to use it, I think it's beautiful 💕.

My nans nickname from her younger sister was ris/rissie, but her youngest sister used to pronounce it Rick/ricky, so that became her nickname 😀.
Suggestions for middle names: Iris Grace, Iris Amelia, Iris Olivia, Iris May, Iris Joy.

I love it. It was on my top three names for this baby if a girl until I heard a newborn with it in my GPS so I downgraded it.

But it's such a lovely pretty name.

I don't think it's old ladyish, it's actually quite modern IMO! Gorgeous name, prefer it to Isabelle.

My SIL considered Iris too, bc it means "rainbow" and she is having her rainbow baby. I think it's pretty and I imagine it will be well received since flower names and "old lady" names are currently popular. Older generations may think it's an out-dated name tho - i'm pretty sure my mom would hate it.

I don't think it really has nicknames - maybe "Rissy"?

My little girl is Isabelle. Her middle name is Iris.
After her great great grandma iris who was 91 last week.
its a lovely name but I wouldn't use it as a first as lazy eyes run in the family and I was setting hwr up to be bullied if she had one.
ive heard a few Iris since she was born but I dont hear that many Isabelles tbh. X

I love the name Iris, but my hubby doesn't so it's not on our list. I quite like older, simple girl names (Iris, Hazel, Rosa). As far as middle names, I like Iris Anne, Iris Annabelle, Iris Amelia, Iris Olivia, or another name that starts with an A or O. I think it flows together nicely.
