Hello,

Last week I noticed a lot of discharge so I made an appt. with a nurse practioner and she found BV (bacterial vaginois). She gave me some gel to insert every night for 5 nights. So I did just that. Then today I had my 2nd prenatal appt. with My doctor. And I told her how I was concerned about this infection and wanted to make sure I could could get rid of it. (I read online that it can cause MC and early delivery) I have also been getting white clumpy discharege lately too so informed her which she said was a yeast infection. She said that these are both normal in pregnancy and they were just something that I had to deal with and that they will just keep coming back. She did recommend some types of yogurt for the yeast. But I am just concerned, I feel like I should try and treat these infections with medication and get rid of them. ...Im just confused and worried! Anyone have any input/advice. thanks!

Did she tell you not to take meds? I would be taking them ASAP, if it were me. I hate the itches. You can also take acidofollis. It's a supplement to help prevent them in the future.

I am no doctor, but that sounds suspect to me. I thought you needed to be extra careful about any kind of infection during pregnancy.

yea i don't know..I'm so confused! The nurse practioner gave me the treatment for the BV. but I want to know it is gone for sure! But the doctor says it will just keep on coming back.? And for the yeast infection she just told me to eat certain yogurts to treat it..I wish I knew what the right thing to do was.

Sounds right to me, you can take meds for yeast infection, but because you are pregnanct they may react differently then if you weren't pregnant for example itching gets worse or you start to burn.

U can't take the meds when pregnant.
I have it to and was just told take probiotics daily

I had thrush (yeast infection) almost constantly throughout my last pregnancy. As soon as I got rid of it it would come back again. It is essentially harmless to you and your baby. Your baby could catch it during labour but even if it does it isn't harmful. It's also not really an infection, just an overflow of the yeast that is naturally in your body.

It does flare up if you eat too much sugar and fat, so maybe check your diet. Also you can use canesten cream to ease the itchiness.

Don't know about the bv, sorry.

If you have taken a treatment and still expereincing symptoms then have them do another swab, insist on it.

The nurse was right in saying that if you get thrush or an infection when pregnant you may well be more susceptible to it throughout pregnancy - you may just have to 'deal with it' in that sense. But UTIs, BV, thrush are still treatable during pregnancy, you just have to check labels or check with the pharmacist for over the counter stuff, & check with GP first for prescription stuff. You shouldn't have to sit & suffer with it. The yogurts are more of an at home natural remedy that a lot of people use, pregnant or not.

I've had thrush almost constantly this pregnancy, and I have been using a pessery weekly, it is totally safe in pregnancy, however the oral tablet isn't safe.
I was advised by a member on here to try Multi-Gyn Actigel, and as its totally safe in pregnancy I have to say so far it's been great!!!

If you had BV, it's not surprising you got a yeast infection, as the treatments for BV can often flip your vaginal pH over the other way and cause a yeast infection. But that's absolutely no reason why you can't treat them! You can't take the pill for a yeast infection during pregnancy, but you can treat it with over the counter creams. It's also a good idea to start taking some probiotics if you keep getting these, as both are caused by an imbalance of healthy bacteria in your vagina. The probiotics alone may not treat it (though they do in some people), but it would be a good thing for a month or two just to get your body back on track. Yogurt is also good. I've actually treated a yeast infection entirely using yogurt before, but you really might want to try the creams (like Monistat) just to get on top of it. But definitely don't leave it untreated!

NO it is definitely not ok to have untreated BV or yeast infections during pregnancy. BV can possibly cause pre term labor. Both of these are very treatable in pregnancy as long as you are not in first trimester. during my first ob appt, my doc noticed discharge, my results came back as bv, i was given antibiotics. The antibiotics did the trick, but because antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria, it gave room for yeast to grow. so then i had a nasty yeast infection. I was then given terazol. it went away but came back. I have never been able to FULLY get rid of my yeast infection. it goes away and comes back, but i always treat it when i feel its there. my doctor trusted my instincts and when i said i had a yeast infection, she just wrote me a prescription for it. Never had to swab me again. im now on weekly 'waist down' appts. i told her i think i may have another one. so she swabbed me real quick, took a look under the microscope, and this time its actually BV again. so she gave me the antibiotics again (flagyl) and the terazol to use as soon as im done jjust in case it gives me another yeast infection.
so needless to say, ive had all types of messyness in and out of my cooch this pregnancy but I will never let it sit. its annoying, but hey it gotta be done. treat it as much as needed!

^ I agree - it needs to be treated in pregnancy, there was a member on here who had a preemie as the result of it. x

I'm just being treated for thrush, it was so bad a winced every time I sat down or walked very far. I'm the end I spoke to my GP over the phone (2 week wait for an appt) and he told me to use a pessery and cream and of it didn't get rid of it or it came back really soon to go and see him to try something that is prescription only. He told me just to stay away from the tablet versions. There is no way I could live with it for another 2 weeks never mind for the rest of my pregnancy! As soon as it comes back (I know it will as I have it a lot even when I'm not pregnant) I'm back to my GP to get it sorted! Xxx

Thank you all for the helpful advice! I am going to try the yogurts she recommonded first and see how that goes. I am almost positive that the yeast infection started when I was using the treatment gel for the BV. I am going to just call and make an appt. with a different doctor to get checked again to make sure the BV is gone. It is weird my doctor said that it cannot cause preterm labor! But I am extra worried about this because I am already at risk for preterm labor with my arcuate uterus.

I dont think a yeast infection can cause ptl, but i believe BV can and you should absolutely be treated for that.

Charlottes story - its not widely known but it is very important. I dont wish to scare people, just let others know the importance of treatment

I had the worst Yest Infection of my life till a week ago. 21 days of constant terconazole (Terazole) worked, finally. sometimes the 7 day cream just is not enough. It may come back and I will go right back to my OB for another Rx. No need to be miserable.

Monistat and Micronazole burn me bad. Ouchie! Terconazole is WAY better IMO.
