I'm aware bottles should be made on demand but also very aware that alot of people don't do this. So was wondering if this way is safe ...

If i was making a few 4oz bottles -

1. Boil the kettle then fill the bottles up to 2ozs
2. Add the formula to the bottles then rapid cool
3. Store the bottles in fridge
4. Pour the remainder of the boiled water into a thermal flask
5. When LO wants a bottle fill the rest of the bottle up (2ozs) with water out of the thermal flask
6. Allow LO to drink

Is this way safe?
How long would it be before the water in the bottles needed re-doing?

I dont really understand why you would want to do it this way? If you didnt want to premake fully or wait around for bottles to heat/cool etc then maybe try this way.

-Boil a kettle full of water and leave to cool.
-When fairly cool transfer into a large jug and place in the fridge.
-When baby needs a bottle (4oz) boil kettle and fill a sterilsed bottle with 2oz just boiled water.
-Add formula scoops and shake.
-Measure 2oz of your cooled boiled fridge water into a spare bottle.
-Add cooled water to your made-up formula.
-Check temp on wrist, it should be about right.

This method takes a bit of time at the start of the day getting your jug of cooled boiled water prepared but means that you are not storing made up formula, the powder is being added to water above 70c, and there should be no need to cool or heat each bottle. xxx

I want to do it that way as it means the formula is getting added to water above 70 degrees.
I will be able to pre make them & store them so this will be convenient.
Then when LO wants a bottle i can simply take it out the fridge, add the water from the thermal flask -which will still be warm so will make the bottle a nice temp.
Then no cooling or warming will be neccessary.

Unless it wouldn't work this way?

I think if you did it this way you would also have to measure out the water from the flask into a spare sterilised bottle before adding it to the premade formula as when water and powder are mixed, the powder will displace some of the water. So adding 4 scoops of formula to 2oz of water could bring the total volume up to 2.5oz, so if you added water from your flask to make it go upto the 4oz line then you will have only added 1.5oz of water instead of the 2oz you need to add. If that makes sense lol. xx

Ah yeah i understand, i didn't think of that.
I've read that a lot of people still microwave - is it only dangerous because of the hot spots? Or can it kill the nutrients etc?
Sorry about all the questions x

I think as you would only be microwaving for a metter of seconds that it wouldnt harm the nutrition in the milk, its just the hot-spots that are the dangers. I personally choose not to microwave, but you will find loads of ladies that do and have never had any problems, you just have to be diligent. xx

Thanks for the advice :) Hopefully i'll find a way that suits me x

why dont you get one of those thermal flasks and fill it up with really hot water! and then add 2 oz of the really hot water and 2 oz cooled boiled water stored in a jug, just add 4oz to the bottles altogether and 4 scoops of formula! isnt that easier? i have a water dispenser so i just add hot and cold water from there. lo has been having a bottle a day since she was born and thats been going fine, actually now that it is summer and quite hot i dont even bother to add too much hot water.i feel like she needs a cool drink...hahaha

anyway the thermos thing worked out the most convenient for me in the beginning when i was so paranoid about the bottle being the perfect temperature...then you do learn that lo will take what you give them....atleast thats how it is for me, my nephew is 2 yrs old and still really fussy about having warm milk!

that would be easier yes but im under the impression that the formula has to be added to hot water else it doesn't kill bacteria?
to be honest ill probably just use the microwave anyway as ive read that several people do

i think you will be fine adding it to warm water from the thermos! seriously it should be fine! you have boiled it and sterilised the bottles, i think thats good enough.but obviously you should do whatever you think is best and most convenient.

I make 6oz bottles for my LO. I keep cooled boiled water in the fridge. When it is time for a feed i boil the kettle. I put 3oz of boiling water in the bottle, add 6 scoops of powder, and give it a good shake. I then add 3oz of cooled boiled water, and give a good shake. it is then ready to drink. Not had any probs with this and helps during the night as takes only 2 mns.

I used to make my bottles up by pouring the boiled water into sterilised bottles in the morning, leaving them on the side and then added the milk powder as and when needed. This was actually how I was advised to do it by the hospital staff and is how all my friends and family make up their babies bottles. None of us have ever had any problems doing it this way. But I had to switch my babies milk to comfort milk which has to be made up with boiling water to dissolve properly. So now I make my bottles up by pouring the boiled water into the bottles, add the formula powder, rapid cool and store in the fridge. Then when the time comes I pop the bottle in the microwave for 20 seconds and give it a good shake. I'm not worried about hotspots because I only put the bottle in the micro just long enough to take the chill off.

All the faffing around with flasks and jugs of water just isn't for me although I do understand why people do it that way. I really think you just have to do what works for you hun.

I've just posted a thread about all the confusion with making up bottles, it's enough to send you crazy! Tbh I've been using the flask/boiled water method but I'm starting to worry as LO seems a bit iffy past few days and using this method I'm not actually mixing the formula in water at/above 70 degrees. After reading up online for me it seems the most logical method is making up a full feed, rapid cooling it then storing it at back of fridge to make sure formula is added to right temperature water. I'm gonna start doing it this way but only making 3-4 bottles a time not for the full 24 hours. I thought about doing it the way you said but again like a PP mentioned it means the water measurments wouldn't be right and you would need another steralised bottle To measure it correctly! Sometimes it just ends up that much faf on you may as well make fresh feeds everytime!

Xxx
