To go in a hot tub in early pregnancy? I have this photo shoot thing tomorrow where I will be in the water.. 97-102 or 4 degrees..

My doc told me no hot tubs and no baths with temp 100 or higher.

i really love my hot baths... wonder what they call 100 degree???

My doc said if your skin turns red or you have to ease into it, it's too hot. She said it could interfere with spinal cord development.

I don't know if five minute intervals would be okay or not. If its just legs it should be fine. I don't know about full body though.

I wouldn't get in. Maybe you could do a shoot next to the water?

Hon, it's just not worth it.

This is from Dr. Roman at thebump.com--

"Hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms all have the potential to raise your core body temperature. Early in pregnancy (around five to six weeks of gestation), increased core body temperature has been associated with fetal neural tube defects like spina bifida. Hyperthermia (temperature greater than 102 degrees Fahrenheit) has also been associated with miscarriage, fetal growth restriction and brain damage. If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, I generally recommend that you avoid immersing yourself in a hot tub."

Its not worth the risk, its not just the temp of the water its also somthing to do with the bubbles in hot tubs they can greatly change your blood preasure, even a minute or two can make you feel realy light headed and sick and faint.

even a room temp jacuzzi can make you light headed because it can lower your blood pressure very quickly and when pregnant even early stages that can be very dangerous.

It's also the bacteria that thrive in warm conditions in hottubs hon but the biggest thing is heat. It's not worth the risk.

I kinda sympathize- I'm a plus size model and know my corsets and uber heels days are numbered. I am looking forward to my pregnancy pics though heh xx

They say that your body will tell you when it's not ok. You'll probably be in for a few minutes then feel uncomfortable, which will be your body's way of telling you to get out. You will just have to do it in very small intervals I think.

Eeeek! I've never heard any of that before!!! I have been having a hot bath everyday - now I am freaking out! Surely my midwife would have told me about this??? Surely it can't be that dangerous otherwise they would have said something

Hot baths are fine, docs & midwifes say they're ok for about 20 mins, and that usually you will feel uncomfortable by the time you need to get out.

Normaly they do inform you about it.
Generaly as long as you can sit straight in it then its not too hot and will cool down quickly anyway, if you have to ease into it bit at a time then its too hot.
Hot tubs are worse then generaly taking a back because the heat is maintaned and doesnt give the water chance to cool taking the body temp back down with it.
Its the constant temp, raising the body temp that causes the problem.

Hot bottles can have a bad effect as well even though they dont raise the core temp they raise a localised area temp ie your stomach and stay hot for a long time so keeping heat in that one area too long can do just as much damage as a hot bath or hotub

Ahhh - thankyou ladies!! I feel better now! I do always make them a little too hot though I think but you're right, they do cool down quick and I've never felt uncomfortable so hopefully it's been ok. It's a good thing to know about though - I did know about not going in to sauna's etc but though it was just because of over heating and passing out, didn't realise it could actually harm the baby!
