Is my doctor right, should I not investigate why I'm not getting pregnant?

I'm 32 years old and I started TTC in late 2013 and tried for 6 months but then took a 6 month break and started TTC again in January this year. I have been trying every month since then with no luck. I have been using OPKs, taking my temperature and timing intercourse correctly but still nothing.

I went to the doctor to see if I should do something different or investigate why, because as far as I know if you don't get pregnant after 12 months, you should see if there's a reason. The doctor said that it only counts if it's 12 months in a row, so I have to wait until the end of the year before they'll investigate why.

Is that really how you count how long you have been TTC?

I'm pretty annoyed, because in addition to that I have Hashimoto's but I am not taking anything for it because doctors say I do not have to because my TSH is within "normal" range. That's something else that has been bothering me because recently my TSH has gone up from a little over 2 in January to 4.5 earlier this month, which from what I read, is double what is should be for the first trimester if I do finally end up getting pregnant.

Should I just wait until the end of the year like the doctor told me to and hope for the best?

I'm in the Netherlands, by the way, if that matters.

I would have just said that you have been trying since 2013, so they would start testing , maybe find a new doctor. I would also order a semen analysis for your partner. its normal for doctors to want patients to try for a year before ordering testing because sometimes even if there is nothing wrong it can take a while, but on the other hand if there may be something preventing conception I see no reason in wasting time. I would keep trying out new doctors till you find one who will order the tests, a blood hormone panel and HSG to start and SA for your partner.

I agree with lisap2008.

If you feel like there may be something wrong and just want to know for sure- go for it. Find a doctor who is willing to help you. Trying to conceive is a delicate and emotional time and being stressed out about the unknown will make it feel even more difficult.

Your feelings are more important than your doctor's in this case.

I made a poll many years ago when I first started ttc and asked if women ( who were on an infertility board ) had a " feeling" something was wrong, and most of the women said they had a feeling. I too just had a feeling, but it was mostly because I had sex at the right times off and on and never gotten pregnant. I found out I had unterine polyps, endometriosis and an immune system issue that was causing my infertility. Most insurance ( in the USA) covers diagnosis testing. If it turns out somenthing is wrong, you're going to regret not going in sooner. I am only pregnant now because I was my own advocate and did not give up. Go get some peace of mind. The truth is, most people actually have to try to NOT get pregnant.

I was lucky my doctor ran some basic tests before I even started to ttc she scanned my ovaries and womb and did hormone tests. To be honest I got even luckier I was told to prepare to have problems conceiving and to only try for 6 months before she would refer me to specialised I got pregnant in month 2.
