hey just wondering is there a quicker way to feed baby than having to make them up fresh and waiting on water to cool, i just feel terrible when baby is screaming like mad for ages....... i had pre boiled water and put em into diff bottles then fridge em without formula in them think my midwife said to do that but i dunno if its right???

I think a lot of people make up the day's bottles, quick cool them under the tap and then store them in the fridge. That's what I do anyway!
Oh and if you're going to put the water in the bottles without formula, you can leave them on the side in the kitchen and just add the powder when you need it, that'd be quicker too!

I have always made them up fresh.

Plenty folk make them and chill in fridge til needed.

Here is a wee trick......:winkwink:

Sterilise bottles and put boiled water in them.

When LO is looking to be fed, boil a tiny amount in kettle. Put 1oz of this fresh just boiled water into an empty sterilised bottle and add your (4oz? feed) powder and mix. If you have added 4oz powder then you need to add another 3 of your cooled boiled water- take one of them and pour 3 oz from it into your feed.

That means your formula has gone into freshly boiled hot water (to kill off any bugs) and then it is chilled super quick so ready to feed!:flower:

thats a really good idea!! thank you :)

This is the easiest and quickest way coming straight from a mom of 2 bottle obsessed girls.

I don't know why you need to boil your water...unless your water is dirty there isn't really a need...but since you do, boil it then store it in a gallon or whatever size pitcher or container. Refrigerate or store it however in the container, it'll save space in your fridge (instead of having X amount of bottles throughout your fridge).

When it comes time to make the bottle, pour the water and microwave it. Mess around with the time until you figure our the right cooking time. If it's too hot, pour out a little and add some of the cold water to cool it down. Pour in the formula powder, shake and serve. You will need to mess around with your microwave to see what time warms up the water to the desired temperature. For ours it's 20 seconds to make an 8 oz bottle but that's with room temp water, for refridgerated I think it's about 35 seconds.

Eventually you will be able to tell the temperature of the formula by feeling the outside of the bottle. It comes as second nature. But always shake the bottle after microwaving to even out any hot spots. You're not supposed to microwave the mixed formula, you can, but supposedly it can ruin some of the vitamins (as in make them disappear or become inactive or something). But it won't RUIN the formula so that it's undrinkable and it won't make her sick if you do (unless you burn it, in that case it's like regular milk and too much heat will make it spoil). And obviously don't microwave the bottle with the nipple & top attached, I know it's common sense but you'd be surprised...

OR

Get a bottle warmer, put a WATER BOTTLE (with your already pre-boiled water or just the water bottle water) in the warmer and leave it on to warm. When it comes time to prepare a bottle, get out the pre-warmed water, mix in formula, shake & serve. Since you boil your own water, it would be a good idea to get a few extra backup water bottles prepared. That way when you use water bottle number 1, you can just pop in number 2 as needed. That way you won't be scrambling in the middle of the night to refill your water bottle and can just do it in the morning when you are more awake. Or of course you can pre pour each baby bottle and after warming & removing the first, just stick the next one in. So when the next feeding comes, the bottle will be warm & ready. And you don't need to use a water bottle, you can use anything really as long as it fits. I've just found that a standard water bottle fits perfectly into almost all bottle warmers.

The same principles apply if you are not a mom who gives your babies warm milk. Only differences would be not using a microwave or bottle warmer. I would suggest leaving the water out of the fridge though so it can be more room temperature...nothing more shocking than getting a cold drink in the middle of the night when all you want is a warm, soothing drink... Just saying, I've always taken the extra 20 seconds to give my girls warm milk. I think it's kind of mean to give them cold ones. Yeah, babies will drink it cold but probably not by choice. That would be like you drinking a warm soda, a lukewarm coffee or cold Hot chocolate. All these drinks are drinkable when at the wrong temperature but definitely not as good as they would be if they were served the way they were meant to...you know?

Both of these techniques have worked very well for us and are very quick. The only time spent is setting everything up (as in plugging in the bottle warmer, making sure water bottles are near by and putting a can of formula & a bottle next to it). In your case since you boil it'll take a little longer since you'll want your water to cool down first.

^ In the UK everyone boils their water before making bottles, do you not?

I boil the water and leave it in the kettle for the recommended half an hour and then fill a thermos flask up. This lasts all day then and is the recommended temp to kill the bugs off from the powdered milk. I then just have to stick it in a jug of cold water for a few mins. This was advised to me by a mw when i was tearing my hair out!

Nope, we don't boil the water. I'm sure some people do but it's not a common practice.

We are advised to boil new bottles, cups & pacifiers...but to be honest I think it's a new mom/newborn thing. After the first 6 months or so I didn't do this, I'd just run them through the dishwasher.

In the US moms typically use bottled water or tap water or filtered water from the tap (tap=sink). But again, I'm sure there are some that do their own boiling but I've never met any :)

OK, here is what I did with Thomas - he was exclusively bottle fed and we are UK so were advised to boil the water.

Boil the kettle with fresh water in it, and leave it for about 20 minutes to cool. Then take your sterilised bottles and put the required amount of water into each one, put the teat/lid on a leave to cool until they are OK to put in the fridge. Then put them in the fridge and use them all up that day - if you do this each morning, then you just take one out of the fridge when you need it, put the powder in and warm it in a bottle warmer (i confess I used the microwave when he was a bit older though). This works really well as you can take them out and about (I got a couple of insulated bottle cooler/warmers) and take the powder out in a measured tub. Then you just need to heat (I also got one of those thermos things for bottle warming when out and about). Failing that, take empty sterile bottles out and use cartons of ready made formula.
At night, I would do a couple of bottles with fresh water (i.e. 20 minutes from boiled) and put them into the bottle warmer jackets and take the powder up in ready measured tubs, then in the night I could just add the powder and shake it up - the water would be still warm/tepid into the early hours.
Hope that helps!

That's exactly what I do with Evie  She has her bottles warm tho, so I heat up the water in the bottle, then add the powder (it always seems to dissolve better in warm water) and away we go. Takes a couple of minutes to heat up the bottle and that's it :) If your LO will take it at room temp, even better. There's no need to store the water in the fridge, put it somewhere out of the sunlight and away from heat sources and it'll keep for up to 24 hours
