I am currently using cartons at night but was wondering if it's ok to put boiled water in the bottle a few hours before the feed and then add powder to the cooled water and give straight to baby at room temperature as that's what she is used to? will the milk be ok added to cooled water?

Thanks x

Formula powder isn't sterile and should ideally be added to water that is no less than 70 degrees to kill the bacteria.

But as long as you use it straight away and don't save any that's left it should be fine to do it the way you are suggesting.

I've always pre-made Fran's bottles for day and night by making as fresh, rapid cooling and storing in the fridge for up to 24hrs then just reheating as needed - I used to keep a bottle warmer upstairs for convenience and popped the bottles in a cool bag with ice packs, but when the bottles got bigger and took ages to warm I just went downstairs and popped one in the microwave the same as during the day (this is fine as long as you shake well to mix in any hotspots).

I did it the way you've suggested for ages, but am finding that as the nights are getting colder, Freya's beginning to object a bit. She's not overly fussy about the temp, but I think it has been a bit too cold for her! I now pre-make before she goes to bed like bigbetty above, fill a flask with hot water before bed, and when she needs it, just stick the hot water in a jug, pop the bottle in from the fridge, and in a few mins it's just warm enough. I've also got a bottle warmer - waste of space if you ask me! I think the bottle's warm, but when I shake it, it quickly cools down, so I have to put it back in - takes too long!

I put 3/4 of the amount of cooled water in the bottles, then top them up to full amount with hot water, either via kettle if were in or during the day and by flask if were out or during the night. This seems to get it at the right temp without making LO wait!

At the mo im filling bottles to 4ozs storing them in the fridge (although the night one i take up with us so gets to room temp i guess) then top up to 6ozs for his feed, add powder and wa la.

In the US most people use sterile nursery water ( Apparently they don't have this in the uK ). So they keep the water at room temp and then add the formula and powder as needed. Some people make the bottles once a day and keep them in the fridge, heating them as needed. I have never heard of having to heat the powder to a certain temp. But I know the guidelines are different. I think the way you are doing it is fine!

This is what I do. Having to boil a kettle, wait around and then add powder and then cool it is far too much effort! Especially with a hungry baby! I boil kettle, fill several bottles and then serve it room temp.

Shortie I think your ticker from the bump is a little off! Wrong year maybe? :winkwink:

I do it that way too, fill a few bottles with boiling water and leave to cool and use as and when needed at room temp. I dont store it in the fridge though, just leave them out in the kitchen so i dont have to heat them up.

That is exactly what I do - and then when we go somewhere i premeasure the powder and i just have to add it to the water right before she eats, so i dont need to worry about fridges or heating when im out and about....although someone commented that as its getting colder the baby seems to fuss about at night and not take the bottle...and mine is too, so im going to try and heat her night time bottles i think...

Bigbetty do you assrmle the bottle with teats n store in fridge or add the teat just before feeding straight from a sterilizer....thanks

I assemble everything - put the teats and lids on then store in the fridge xx
