Hello all x

Am wondering whether my baby girl may have a touch of colic/wind?

She is always uncomfortable after a feed for a good hour - sometimes more, sometimes a little less. She will scream out and her little body goes rigid - also she will wave her arms around and stretch out/pull up her legs whilst yelling out.

I was told it is only colic if she cries for hours continuously without stopping - she doesn't do that, but will cry out in short bursts on and off. It is alot worse during the evenings - typically 6 onwards and can last well into the early hours, which is affecting how well she sleeps - very restless and fidgety. Even when it begins to ware off, she will experience discomfort straight after next feed for a while.

Problem is it often puts her off of her milk - she will start squirming halfway through and won't take anymore - i can actually here her little tummy churning/bubbling when this happens. She can be very difficult to wind and strangely this gets worse as the day goes on....? even when she does bring some wind up, she still seems to suffer.

Have tried infacol but it didn't really help too much.

Any suggestions? She is 3 weeks old. Do you think it could be a touch of colic even though she isn't screaming continuously for hours - just short bursts over a period of a few hours?

I'm not certain, but I'd say it sounds more like bad trapped wind - as far as I know, colic generally effects baby's in the evenings only, so if your LO gets this during the day it's probably wind.
Once she gets to 1 month, I'd advise trying gripe water (they can't have it til 1 month old). we've started using it with our LO, and it works brilliantly. We found that infacol made her constipated. For now, try winding her half way through her feed - this also helps Olivia. You can also try lying her across your knees on her tummy and rubbing & patting her back, that gives Olivia some comfort too.

Good luck xxx

Thanks welshgirl - she does mainly get it late evening and in the night - though she does suffer some discomfort during the day too x

Is she bottle fed? Maybe you could see what your health visitor says about changing the milk she has.....or you could try different bottles?
We were using Avent, but have been trying the Mam bottles, and they seem to give Olivia less wind. I've also heard Dr Browns are really good for wind/colic.

I stop half way through a feed and wind and we normally get a good burp then wind again after and get a ginormous burp then. Sometimes we get a bit of sick but normally just burps. Only get a huge vomit when she has had too much but thats rare. Tommee tippee do an anti colic bottle which we use at night and this seems to help with night time wind/colic/sickness.

rhys is doing the exact same and was going to post the same thread as you. he's only been doing it 2 days, he's 4 weeks on monday so i've given him half teaspoon of ripe water. rhys doesnt really cry proper tears more like a forced cry out. if you find a cure let me know and vice versa.

I saw a doctor today and luckily she was due a feed in there, so i fed her, he watched her and diagnosed silent reflux - even sent me to see a ped at local children's hospital! They said the same! And they gave me infant gaviscon to put in her bottles and some anti -acid drops........now, i don't want to count my chickens before they hatch, but, usually after her 5 o clock feed, she is sooo irritable and obviously in pain/discomfort - she wont settle enough to be put down and will keep crying out and i have to find humpteen different ways/positions to hold her in to comfort her, but, after just one dose of both meds, she sat contentendly for 20 mins in her chair and then fell asleep laid on me without a whimper - put her in her basket and she is still sleeping now, so.....? Hope it continues!

Good to hear you got everything sorted out! Hunter had colic for a few months as an infant. Every day he would start crying around 1 pm for 3 hours. Then he would start crying at 6:30 or 7 pm for another 3 hours. It was exhausting, and glad he finally got over it.
