So I've been looking through my last baby's babies birth notes and it says this:

On attempting delivery of shoulder, anterior shoulder visible but unable to deliver, in same contraction moved into McRoberts position and shoulders delivered easily.

At the time it was very scary but what do you think?

Im not sure hun, similar happened with my little boy he came out with one hand on his face and the other shoulder was still behind my pelvis, i remember her calling shoulder dystocia to the other midwife but on my notes it says no on the shoulder dystocia part

Yes McRobert's is used to rectify a Shoulder Dystocia...basically it means you are flat, your knees are bent towards your ears, and dr is trying to pull the posterior shoulder forward. (I'm an L&D nurse). Its super scary for the mommy...someone should have explained what happened to you hun.

Thank you for the information, this also happened in my first birth but its not in my notes, I'm now pregnant with my third what does is it mean for future births because I don't want to go through that again x

It wont change anything. Its just good for the midwife and dr to be aware of when you give birth. However from the notes baby was delivered with one of the first basic techniques. So it sounds a mild shoulder dystocia. So that is good. A good position to give birth in if you have had trouble in the past is on all 4s.

Well once the head is born the shoulders are usually at the narrowest part of the pelvis, so they must rotate to fit through the widest part of the pelvis before the body can be born. With SD the rotation doesn't happen (sometimes due to size, position etc) and the shoulder becomes stuck behind the symphysis pubis. Usually McRoberts position helps to dislodge the shoulder and allow the baby to be born but often there is a brachial plexus injury where the shoulder dislodges.

Nobody on here can tell you what happened at the birth, but as it's documented that they saw the shoulder it isn't likely it was SD. Is it written in your notes anywhere about SD? There is also a lot of documentation after this happens.

However it does sound like they were worried that it might be SD and prophylactic McRoberts is often used when the baby seems to become stuck, even if it isn't SD. This happened to me.

If you are unsure about anything I'd definitely recommend talking to a midwife, you can arrange a meeting to go through your notes, ask any questions etc and they will explain it to you. It can be so confusing looking back at your birth and not having the whole - picture - if you know what i mean? Especially when it's not gone to plan or something happens like this. Going through your notes with a professional who can explain it all can really help you understand.

I plan to do this before my having another baby as even over 2 years later I still get flashbacks and I kind of want closure.

Good luck xx

Yes, minor dystocia. I had this with the 2nd (the 1st had quite a severe one and we went to collarbone break as he just wouldn't come out). A bit of wonky positioning. If your 2nd was delivered fine, then I'd probably call it more of a bad position in that particular labour rather than a recurrent problem relating to your body/pelvis.

Winegums is right that sometimes midwives/doctors will assume/jump to SD and start McRoberts right away (rather than a quick tug) but that is only something that can be determined from your notes.
