I have a 2 week old on SMA gold, he has never been good at burping after each feed, I can be there for ages before he burps and not on each feed. Since yesterday evening he has been doing really smelly farts, will not settle after a feed, will only sleep if upright or lying upright against my chest. He cries out in pain when placed in his cot, pulling his legs up to his chest.

Is this trapped wind?, I never expereinced this with my little girl so really unsure. I have started giving him infacol before each feed today, as he seems really uncomfortable and cries out in pain when placed in his cot after a feed. He has been doing quite explosive and smelly poos too. Could it be the milk? MW said it's best not to keep changing his milk (he's been on SMA since he was a few days old).

Anything else I can do to make him more comfortable or ease his discomfort?

If it is just wind and not the milk affecting him, then you could try a bottle with a more advanced anti-colic system such as dr browns or tommee tippee with the anti-colic tube. Also keeping him upright on your shoulder for 10-15 mins before laying him down to make sure the milk has settled in his stomach should help. xxx

I am currently using the MAM anti colic ones, but will get some Dr Brown ones, been giving him the infacol today but so far still the same.

There is no harm in changing his milk. You could try a comfort milk, which are specially designed to help babies suffering with wind, colic and/or constipation. SMA, Aptamil and Cow and Gate all do comfort milks. If changing bottles doesnt work, I would defo try a comfort milk. xxx

I don't know about changing bottles or formulas, but I think it can take infacol a good few days to work even when giving it every feed. I found Infacol didn't work for my LO but I know a few people who swear by Dentinox instead so I'm trying that now.

I'd be inclined to try infacol or dentinox first before changing bottles or formula. They're meant to take a few days to kick in but I've always noticed a difference very quickly. Dd was an infacol girl but ds didn't get on and is a dentinox boy, though he can't handle a full dose so he gets half of one. There's also gripe water for a quick and very effective fix.

We had really bad experiences with gripe water. Made my DD2 throw up really violently. Also it can only be used from 1 month old. Ive heard great things about dentinox though. Used infacol with DD2 when she was young, but didnt really notice a great difference, saying that though her wind wasnt too bad. xx

My little girl had bad wind from about 2 weeks, tried infacol and it did help a bit to get burps out but she would still arch her back & wriggle in pain especially during the evenings. I tried colief & from the first feed she's like a different baby. The only problem is that you have to add it to the milk 30 minutes before the feed as it contains enzymes that reduce the lactose content of the milk which is what sometimes causes the gas. So it can be tricky to get the timings right but it's amazing stuff.

Good luck, it's horrible when they are so little & in pain :sad2:

xx

Colief is really expensive though, so unless you can get it on prescription, I would rather use the comfort milk, which has reduced lactose also. xxx

Ohh I didn't know that about the comfort milk... Might try that instead then as during the night it's hard to make sure the colief is in the bottle for 30 minutes before feeding.

I agree the colief is expensive, £11 for 7ml  but I'd pay ten times that for a non crying baby haha!

Thanks

Yeah comfort milk has less than half the lactose of regular formula. It is a couple of quid more expensive per tub than first milk, but you make it up the same way and will definatly work out cheaper than using colief. xx

hi everyone,

I have been trying the infacol since my first post, its made a little differrence, he is still taking ages to burp, still really unsettled of evening but is passing wind more frequently, still seems to be in some discomfort. Discussed with HVwho said I could chaange him to comfort milk but to not keep changing his milk.

Bought infamil comfort today and he's had one feed from it, not noticed any difference tbh (so far). Also got some dr brown bottles. At this point I am willing to try anything that may result in a more settled baby and perhaps a tad more sleep for me too!

Hi ruby, I've put our LO on comfort milk as of last night, last nights feeds were still bad but the HV told me that it's a build up of gas throughout the day that causes the problems in the evening, so she's been on the comfort milk all day today & the 5.30pm feed was also ok... No crying after it so far & she's back asleep, the 9pm feed will be the test though lol.

Good luck!
xx
