Hi girls!
I'm finally getting round to posting my birth story... My gorgeous boy Jason is 9 weeks old!! It's hard to get to the computer with three kids, what can I say!
I hope I haven't forgotten anything, but here goes...
I stopped work on the 10th of February and was more than ready to do so; Im not sure if it was my age or the fact that I have two young ones at home already, but I found this pregnancy quite a bit harder (and longer!!) than my other two... I was actually physically more than fine, apart from having long stretches of being awake at night for no particular reason... I gained 14kg, most of it belly and am well on my way back to my pre-preg weight now... Bit slower than with the last two, but apparently that's normal.
Anyway!!! Due date (Valetine's Day) came and went with NO sign of anything even remotely happening. Started with the every 3-day ob/gyn visits, and everything was looking fine in there, apart from one at 40+5 where it seemed I didn't hv much water left. I went home with instructions to guzzle as much fluid as I could, which I did, and came back two days later with normal fluid levels!! I was thrilled b/c I was pretty adamant I didn't want to be induced. At the 41 week (Friday, 22nd Feb) check-up, there was FINALLY something happening on the monitor; lots of contractions and tightenings, most of which I could feel I went home with an appointment on the following Monday, which both the nurse and the ob/gyn assured me I wouldn't 'make it' to
Saturday morning rolled around and I was feeling decidedly 'off'. We had planned on taking the kids up skiing again but Kilian decided he didn't want to go... Thank goodness! I really wasn't feeling up to it, but would have gone if both wanted to. Reto decided to go with Lindsey alone, and off they went around 9.30am. I stuck Kilian in front of the tv for a bit and mopped the floors for the millionth time in an effort to keep upright. At lunchtime, I wasn't feeling very hungry at all, so we just had some pineapple. I started on the giant pile of ironing shortly after lunch, despite having a 'twingy' sore back... Those twinges started to get to be more and more like (very bearable) contractions around 3/3.30pm, at which point Lindsey and Reto got home. I told him I was 90% sure that things were getting started, but that it would probably be a while yet...
Reto had planned on going to watch a handball game, and we had invited Kilian's God-dad, Bruno, for dinner. I was making sticky pork tenderloin, snow peas and rice. Reto took off after a quick shower and I finished the ironing. It was around 4.30pm, at which point the contractions (they were definitely contractions by then) kicked up a notch. I had to stand and hold onto the counter during them... I started timing them with my phone and they were coming every 5mins and lasting 45 seconds or so, but not regularly; like, they'd suddenly stop for 10mins sometimes, or they'd be every 2 mins for 20 minutes and then nothing... Very strange. I continued cooking dinner but called Reto to say I thought he'd better come home, and I wasn't sure it was a great idea to have Bruno over anymore. What does Reto say? "Ok, but... what am I gonna eat?!? I'm HUNGRY!!!"...
I said, never mind, I'll cook but there's no way I can eat with you guys. I had started having the 'clear out' by then and was a bit nauseous.
Bruno arrived just after Reto got back, around 5.30 or 6pm I think. Reto had already called to warn him that we may have to kick him out earlier than usual, and I had called my mil to tell her that things had got going and we'd need her to come over at some point that evening. I was still clearing out, and I thought MAYBE my waters were leaking as my undies were wet with a bit of brown blood in.
I explained to the kids that the baby was coming, and that mummy was having tummy cramps to help get the baby out, so I wouldn't eat dinner with them.
Once dinner was ready, the contractions were starting to get more uncomfortable; I literally threw the dinner on the table and told everyone to serve themselves (I wasn't even up to plating it by that time ), I was going for a bath. I called the midwife first to see if she thought we should come in; she said if I was still comfortable staying home, I should ring again when my waters had definitely gone or the contractions were much stronger...
So I ran myself a nice hot bath and ended up in it with Lindsey, who came up to see how I was doing. The contractions stopped almost as soon as I got in but picked up again after about 15mins break, still quite irregular.
Kilian got jealous that I'd had a bath with Lindsey, so I ran another one for us two, except that there was no hot water left!! Poor kid had a lukewarm bath and got out after about 5mins...
I got the kids into there pj's and explained that 'grosi' (my mil) would be over shortly to stay with them while mama went to the hospital to have the baby. By this time it was about 8pm and I was starting to have to lean on something and moan a bit through the contractions. Mil arrived around 8.30pm and we got the kids settled in bed ready for a story. Lindsey declared she didn't want to have a baby EVER because she didn't want the silly tummy cramps..!! Poor thing!!
I shoved a few last minute things into my hospital bag, and we left for the hospital about 9.15pm or so. At this point there was NO WAY I could sit down; the contractions were coming pretty fast and stronger, so I kneeled in the front, holding on to the back of the seat. I was still feeling a bit green, despite not having had anything since the pineapple at lunch.
We got to the hospital and I was thrilled to have the door to the birthing unit opened by the midwife that had delivered Lindsey AND Kilian!! Unfortunately her shift was ending, but I ended up with another older lady who was just as lovely. They did all the usual sticking poking and prodding and then she checked me. Only 3cm!!!! I was deflated But she was very reassuring saying that since this was my third baby, things would progress quickly. Which they did! I walked around and chatted with Reto and the midwife between contractions, during which I had to kneel over the birthing ball and moan. I must have looked a sight!! Smiling, joking, chatting the one minute and on my knees moaning the next! Labour, what can I say!?
By about 11pm the midwife was sure things were moving along nicely, and I was starting to feel some pressure and grunting through contractions. She checked and I was 9cm and a bit, with a little 'lip'. So she called my ob/gyn, who arrived about 1/2 hr later. I was at 10cm by then and already starting to push. I was pushing for maybe 1/2hr when the contractions seemed to die out again... Great... just like with Kilian!! The ob/gyn checked me and my cervix had closed up a bit again- just like with Kilian!!! I was pretty frustrated, to say the least...
The ob told the mw to feel for my waters: after some mega painful prodding with me on my back (the WORST position EVER for me!), she found that my hind ones were still intact. They decided to break them; out came a flood of GREEN water!!! Major panic on my part but they assured me baby was fine (from the fetal heart monitor) and that that could happen sometimes...
With the broken waters the contractions were much stronger but the lip in my cervix wouldn't move. The mw did some more stretching and prodding - it was all i could do not to kick her!! - and the finally let me back into my kneeling position around 12:45 or so. The ob ordered some pitocin to help strengthen the contractions: for some reason my uterus can't find enough power on its own but told Reto that it would be another while before the baby would come...
Poor man was desperate for the toilet so looked at me with hound eyes asking if it'd be ok if he went to the loo... Of course!! Off he went with the reassurance of both doc and midwife that baby wasn't coming anytime soon... uh huh...No sooner had he left than, for the first time in three deliveries, I felt the baby slide down the birth canal with a whoosh! I practically screamed to the midwife "this baby is COMING!"
She says "Yes, this baby is coming! But your husband isn't here!" at which I promptly start crying and yelling "NO! I don't want it to! Not yet!" Cue ginormous contraction and I can feel the head...!!! I think I managed 1/2 a contraction without pushing, but not more. Geez your body really does take over at that point!
And just then, in walked Reto going "EH!?! What's going on!?!" at which the midwife profusely apologized saying she had no way of knowing it would go so quickly and that the baby was coming NOW.
Two more pushes and Jason Reto Kissling was born at 1.17am on Sunday, Feb 23rd 2014 weighing 3.256kg and 49cm.
I must admit, I was shocked when the doc said "Its a boy!" !! I literally said "Really!?!?"... My whole pregnancy I was SURE he was a girl! Of course, I'd not trade him for ANYTHING, he is GORGEOUS and so EASY! He breastfeeds like a champion, only feeds twice a night (I am SO well rested in comparison to during my pregnancy where I was up half the night!! ) and is already smiling and cooing and talking to me and everyone around him He's PERFECT! Im SO in love, as is the rest of the family of course
Had a bit of drama afterward, unfortunately... My placenta didn't come out on its own so I ended up with an emergency D&C and a spinal despite having done the whole birth with no pain relief at all... DOHH!!! The advantage being, I didn't bleed nearly as much as I normally would hv! Think it scared Reto a bit though... The staff were amazing though and Im not traumatized enough to not want to do it again!! :wink wink: The ob said the placenta was very small though, and if Jason had been any smaller weight wise, he would hv sent it for analysis...
Jase has sure made up for being my smallest now though!!! At 9 weeks he's 58cm and 6.5kg!!!! We are loving being a family of five!!
Will post pics once I've transferred them to the computer... Thanx for reading to those who got this far!!!
