I'm not really sure where to start with this. We had planned a homebirth and after lots of arguing with our midwifery team about the risks of birthing a baby with cleft lip and palate at home they finally agreed to let me have a go. Yay! Unfortunately baby had other plans and induction day arrived.
So off we went to the hospital at 8.30am, got the hormone pessary around 10 and waited...and waited some more...and then more. By evening I was getting pretty annoyed and bored so my sister came up to the hospital, DH went home to the toddlers and I went for a sneaky trip around Tesco after telling the midwives I was just off for a walk. First contractions happened in Tesco (good old Tesco) so I told my sister she'd probably better drop me back at the hospital. They were pretty regular from the start but not too strong so I said to DH to stay at home and try and get some sleep and I'd call him when I needed him. This was about 8.30pm. The midwife on the ward was great, said she'd check and monitor me whenever and just let her know when I thought it was progressing.
At about midnight I called DH in as contractions were getting too strong to breathe through, midwife checked me and said about 4cm dilated. At 1 we decided I'd go on down to labour ward. So lovely helpful midwife handed me over to another midwife down on that ward...
The next midwife I HATED. She took her time doing my blood pressure, reading my notes and asking STUPID questions 'oh, I see you have a history of eating disorder, all ok now?' I'm sorry, I'm in labour, that's relevant how?! I asked her to check me as the contractions were getting pretty intense and was told it was too early. By 2 o clock I was getting fairly distressed, in a lot of pain and said that she REALLY needed to check as I wanted to push.. so she finally agreed to check.. And very swiftly ran off to get another midwife as I was fully dilated. Surprise surprise. She also called a neo natal doctor and a member of the transitional care team to be in the room despite the fact my previous midwife had told her we had full go ahead from the consultant to keep it as natural and as few people as possible due to their being absolutely no need for anyone else to be present :sigh:
Anyway, by this point I was stressed with the midwife and pretty exhausted. From when she acknowledged I was in the final stages of labour to delivery was 19 minutes. Baby turned during delivery (from face up he swivelled round) and he was born not breathing and pretty lifeless but was completely fine, pink and screaming by 5 minutes old.
Barnaby weighed 8lb 1oz and is a noisy hungry boy
Healthy in every way except his cleft which we were expecting. He is feeding fantastically from special squeeze bottles, so much so that the transitional care ward have let us come home today after 36 hours which neither us or they expected.
We have a long journey ahead of us but he's making a good start. Ok I'll leave you some pictures and finish there
