Hi girls hope someone can help. I've been offered a new position with a new company so have to provide two references. It only states that one must be a business not that it must be your current employer. Would it therefore be ok to give a previous employer (rather than current) and a character referee? Will they be weird that I haven't given my current boss? I haven't handed my notice in yet and won't be for a couple of weeks so I don't want them to ask in the meantime!

I think it would be ok, but they may find it a bit odd that you're not providing your current boss so I'd explain why.

New job, how exciting :)

I think they will understand that.

Thanks girls. Do you think they will want to contact my current work when they know I've handed my notice in? I don't have the best working relationship with my manager so I'm worried about it a bit. There seems to be so many rules with regard to references nowadays! Can they contact her without my say so?

No they can't contact without say so, but your boss cannot give you a bad reference just because its sour grapes. It's about your performance and work, not your relationship with him/her.

Normally they don't check references until you have been offered the job so if you know you are going to take it and references won't be a problem it doesn't really matter, you can normally stipulate on an application though that you don't want referees contacted until a post is offered.
