Jobseekers allowance query

Ok I am not returning to my full time job after my maternity leave ends because the pay was rubbish and wouldn't cover child care and I have no family who could do it, I can't ask them for part time hours as I am going to have to give up my car as I won't be able to afford it and it is two bus rides away from my house so I am going to be looking for another job (part time) closer to home.

My question is how long will I have to wait to be able to claim job seekers allowance if I don't find a job straight away? I have read 26 weeks but that seems like a long time?

I claimed from the day my mat allowance stopped, you may only be entitled to it for 182 days- thats the max for contributions based.

wont you get income support? the best thing to do would be to just call up and see what your entitled too xx

you only get income support if you are single- sorry I don't know the OP circumstances

You should be able to claim straight away,though you wont get paid for the first 4 days.Donna.x
