Junk food?? & don't take prenatal pills?

Thank you all for your kind and reassuring words! :)
Going to start my new healthy food diet today *right after this chocolate milk*
Time for a trip to the supermarket! he he he..

My bloods have been fine so far EXCEPT Dr says my vitamin D is very low and was also quite low at the beginning of my pregnancy.. I have been in the sun as much as possible though? Also, She said somethng about my haemoglobin being a little low too..which I think has to do with iron? Though she told me I didn't need to take iron pills for it.

All the best with everyones pregnancies! :)

I follow the "most of the time" rule. I eat healthy foods most of the time and then whatever I want the rest of the time. I don't drink alcohol while pregnant, I've never smoked, and I hate sushi so avoiding it isn't a concern.

I eat a healthy breakfast because usually I have no unhealthy cravings in the morning. It is usually peanut butter on whole wheat toast, fruit, yogurt, water and coffee. I take my prenatal vitamin and omega supplement and dinner becasue that's when it makes me the least nauseated.

But I am not a spartan and have a treat most days: chocolate, ice cream, french fries, chips, pizza....mmm. To be truthful, lots of days I have more than one treat, but I feel like it is balanced by the healthy foods I eat most of the time.

Thank you all ladies :flower: You've made me feel a little better already.
Here in Australia we don't have Flinstones vitamins I don't think... so I will try the option of eating a meal and taking my prenatal vitamins straight after.
*Fingers crossed* ! Would possibly eating them before I go to sleep be alright?
Or is it best in the morning?

I'm going to try my best with sticking to a good diet these last 12 weeks and hopefully after birth too! :winkwink:

hey I'm in Australia  maybe try kids chewable vitamins?. I had issues taking my vitamins at first. so I changed brands I'm now on elevit with iodine. plus always take it half way through my breakfast. not on an empty stomach but not at the end either. my diet is shit too don't worry. sweets are my down fall. just make sure to get some fruit and veg in ya. babys will take what they need from your stores. so baby will be fine, it's you who may need the extra goodies.

Just wanted to add: be careful if taking vitamins which aren't designed for pregnancy, normal every day vitamins tend to contain vitamin A which isn't recommended in excessive amounts during pregnancy as it can cause birth defects:flower:

My obygn (baby dr) doesnt believe in vitamins too much he believes you should be taking your vitamins by eating food so having proper diet.... but i have a horrible diet right now cause of my gallbladder (low fat diet) mind you i cave a little bit and have junk food but i agree with what you said back in the day there was lots of healthy babies try not to worry to much!

i was told by my midwife to take them before i go bed. so if i am having snack take it then or after dinner. i tried to take them in first tri and it would make me more sick than i already was. i have blackmores pregnancy ones. she said they mainly like u to keep taking them so ur haemoglobbin levels stay normal to high to aid in a speedy recovery for yourself after delivery. she even showed blood test results where my levels were still normal but had dropped.

I tested low for vitamin D too and I live in Dubai... the country of eternal sunshine. I think it's a very common problem so don't worry too much about it. I take a vitamin D supplement and it is TINY! and never bothers my stomach. It is important to supplement if you are low though, as vitamin D deficiencies have been linked to language development issues. Lucky for you you've found out at the begining of the last tri when baby's brain is doing most of its growing :) xxx

:hugs:

ive never taken the pregnancy vitamins past 12wks as was told you dont need to and i wouldnt worry too much about your diet the baby only takes all the good stuff frrom it anyway and its not making you pile on the weight id be more concerned if you werent eating anything or was restricting your diet too much a varied diet is a healthy diet so just try and mix in some of the good stuff with the junk lol if your gonna have a big chocolate bar have a banana or yoghurt after keep your energy up x

Hey hun, for your vitD, drink some orange juice with your vit tablet, as the OJ helps you to synthesise your calcium which turns to vitD. Thats what I have read anyway! It might help!!

I'm in Australia too. Why don't you get yourself some elevit prenatal vitamins, they have iodine in them which is really beneficial. I have 1 tablet with a meal once a day and it doesn't make me sick.
As for your diet it's never too late to make changes like the other ladies said.
If you want to give you and the baby's brain a extra boost get some high concentrated fish oil (I get ethical nutrients brand). They reckon it helps your mood too. I take 5 mls a day.
And maybe drink some more water, you will find the more you drink it, the more addictive it becomes.
All the best! :)

Hi - I can totally empathise, I feel guilt over all of my junk food cravings.....
I would never preach to you, because I know what cravings and nausea are like. But just to share some of my tactics to try to minimise the bad foods.....

I totally take the prenatal vitamins, I really do believe in them. My diet is far from perfect on a day-to-day basis, so taking the vits ensures that I get what's needed for my baby and me. Sure women had healthy babies before prenatal vits were invented, but maybe they ate more nutrient-dense food and didn't have access to all the empty calories we do. I see the vits as progress, just like any other advancement in baby care that we are privileged to have access to now. (Make sure to take ones that are specially formulated for prenatal, as regular mulitivits may contain too much vit A. Also if you have any issues with excess blood clotting, choose one that does not contain vit K.)

Re junk food - I try to stock up my fridge, pantry and freezer with healthy things (fruits, veg, tofu, brown rice, healthy soups etc), and try to have these before any junk, and try to treat the junk food as 'treats' only, not something to have several times a day (unless unavoidable due to cravings/aversions). Also I try to have slightly healthier versions of junk food, where possible. Eg wholewheat pretzels, pizza with wholewheat crust, veggie burgers, homemade cakes with less sugar than recipe calls for, cakes with fruit or veg (eg banana, carrot), water (or carbonated water + juice) instead of pop etc.

It's not easy, but any positive changes you make will be beneficial! x
