Hi, ladies --

I just wanted to let you know that at age 44 (!), my LO arrived healthy and happy two months ago today, so it IS possible to have a successful outcome, regardless of what the so-called statistics, doctors, etc., say and that you don't have to be Carla Bruni as well!!!!

A quick bit of background: As I have POCS, I had been told in my 20s that it would be very difficult for me to get pregnant, so I went on to do other things, but once I got married at age 40, my husband and I decided to throw away the contraception and see what happened -- I got pregnant the second month trying, but sadly had an mc -- but ultimately, it was a good thing (NOT at the time), but it made me realise that I could get pregnant and that I very much wanted children -- I had two chemicals in the subsequent year, but my OH was willing to do IVF and my GP was supportive as well -- I lost weight, finally quit smoking, ate healthily and did acunpunture, and was prescribed metformin -- in the pre-IVF bloodwork, it was discovered that I had an underactive thyroid and began taking medication for that. We went to an IVF clinic and saw a fertility specialist elsewhere, and as my cycles were erratic (21 to 44 days), we started dtd from day 7 to 30, and after all that, the month we were going to start out first cycle of IVF, I got pregnant naturally (last June) -- yes, it was hard as I was worried about another mc or problems with LO given my age, but it did work out -- my pregnancy at age 43-44 was routine/normal until wk 32 when I developed high BP, and then, suddenly at wk 36, pre-eclampsia and LO was born that day -- but he was absolutely perfect and I am great now. He made all the developmental milestones a few weeks early at his 6wk check-up and is an absolute delight (90% of the time!) and I look at him and am so incredibly happy.

It CAN happen to us over 40s -- so go to your GP for the basic tests (e.g. iron, thyroid) just to make sure YOU are in perfect condition so that you hopefully will feel confident about yourself. We were told that the chances of a successful pregnancy naturally at age 43/44 was about 2%, but I think it depends on the individual NOT the statistics. Please pm me if you want any advice or support, but it CAN be done -- don't give up hope!

best wishes

Sabrina what supplements if any did you use? did you use softcups and pre seed as well?

Nope - no supplements aside from omega3, folic acid, multi-vitamin and extra iron -- I was on metformin and eltroxin (for an underactive thyroid) and strongly recommend to all ladies trying to conceive to check their thyroid just in case as it may have been a factor in my long term trying to conceive (the month after the medication was correctly adjusted, I got pregnant with a sticky!)....

best wishes

wow sabrina, love hearing this, but hate seeing that 2% satistic tho,i have had that rammed in my face too many times too, can i ask, why was you put on metaform? ive heard that this is helping people to get pregnant, wish i could just ask my gp to put me on it, but i believe you have to have a condtion to be prescribed it. Can I just go in and ask my GP to do all those blood test without a reason except telling them Im TTC?, as I dont want to, because i get all the negatives again put to me i;e. " my age, its some many % chance blah blah" dont want to hear that again xxx

Congratulations Sabrinakat and thank you for giving us some hope! I conceived my first at 40 after many years of trying (gave birth at 41).

We're hoping to try again (I'm 42 now) so it's lovely to know that at 44 you've just had your little person!

Well done and enjoy enjoy enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fantastic news, I'm 37 (38 in June) so I love hearing when women my age & older achieve their BFP's & their little bundles of joy!:baby:

Just wanted to respond to a previous poster -- apologies for NOT responding (but just sent you a private message!) ! I was put on metformin as I was diagnosed with PCOS and some studies (not all) have suggested it helps lower the risk of mc (also, is supposed to help with insulin tolerance, but my GP gave it to me for trying to conceive) and I continued it until wk20-24 (told the ob/gyn week 20, continued until wk 24)....

again, it only takes one good egg and one good sperm (and my husband acts like it was all HIM, naturally!) and good luck....

best wishes

Can I ask about the age of the men involved in these pregnancies? I'm 33, but DH is 44 (45 this summer) and we've had 2 back to back m/c this year and I am starting to get discouraged and worried about his age.

Hi hun,my OH is 40, 41 in the summer.
Maybe get his sperm checked out and get him on wellman multivitamins, I've seen other girls on here get the men to take them..

Wishing you all the luck in the world, sending you loads :dust:

Did you know what your amh or fsh was? Was there any endo issues or blockages? Your post makes me hopeful, however I have one blockage and adenomyosis with low amh and 39y/o, so my percentage even with ivf is 5%. Its freaking ridiculous.

My OH was 42 (me 43) when we conceived LO....

My AMH was originally 4 in Jan 2011 and then 10 in May 2011 (got pregnant naturally in June 2011); my FSH was under 10, my LH under 10 as well in May 2011 (I think both were around 7 or 8, and almost equal). I had done acunpunture from early February to early May (twice a week) in preparation for IVF (our first cycle was to be in June or July as I needed to lose another 10 lbs (had lost about 50lbs in 2010) to have a BMI under 30. I had a private gynae consultation in January 2011 where everything was clear, but it appeared that my right ovary was not producing anymore and told that it meant that every other month, might not ovulate, but that didn't make sense as I did ovulate in January and one would expect then in May, not June, but got pregnant in June? However, my ob/gyn when I was later pregnant said that the weight loss may have acted like clomid, e.g. increased egg production and ovulation.

best wishes to everyone....

That's interesting. There's a woman on the FF over 40s board who is 9 weeks pregnant and just saw a good heartbeat. It is natural, her own egg, and she's due at at age of 50; her husband is 29....

Congrtulations and thank you for sharing. You give me hope. I had 3 failed IUIs this year and we can't afford IVF so we are back to trying naturally. I've been taking Q10 this month, 200mg/day b/c 400 was causing me problems. What dose did you take? I hope it works for me too!

Hi ya Casper 72,Thank you..:hugs:

I took 600mg a day,no side effects whatsoever..

My two best friends are TTC both 42 and both had two miscarriages early on.
IVF Doctor told one of them at start she only had 5% chance of getting pregnant naturally, then she fell pregnant twice naturally,so it just shows you can't go by doctors, they just need to have sticky beans now, they have just started talking coq10 after I got my BFP..

Wishing you loads of luck and sending you :dust:..xxxxx
