Hi girls
I was just wondering if any one could shed any light on polycystic ovaries?
I just went to the doctors because I've been having strange bleeding and she said I have polycystic ovaries... I had a blood test to check for my thyroid or something and she will call me back at 5-6 with the results.
But I'm confused to what it is? If I don't have the thyroid problem how will the cysts affect me? Will they effect my fertility? As she said my body is trying to ovulate which then forms a cyst explaining the bleeding...

Anyone have any info for me?xx

i had bleeding between periods, and was examined downstairs and told i had a cervical something (cant remember the name) and a part of it looked abnormal, i was sent to see a consultant who did a smear which thankfully came back normal....i went back to the consultant who then sent me for a scan for my womb and ovaries, i was told i had polycystic ovaries and had a blood test .....and they also checked my thyroid............the test came back negative for polycystic ovaries but it turns out i have an underactive thyroid.

apparently although i have ovaries which are chunky and with cysts i dont have any symptoms and the blood test confirming came back negative, however a thyroid inbalance can cause bleeding and makes your body out of sorts.

if its thyroid you would be put on medication and once on it your levels will eventually return to normal.

I know you can still fall pregnant with pcos or tyroid problems but with pcos it does increase risks of certain things as it does if you have a thyroid problem it needs to be managed well as the hormone your lacking helps develop the babies brain, it also highers your risk of complications and development to your baby if it isnt well managed throughout your whole pregnancy.

I know there things you can do to help pcos such as diet and excercise however with thyroids there is nothing you can do.

how did she come to the conclusion u have PCOS did u have a scan or a blood test?

Hi all,

I started experiencing chronic abdominal pain on and off since the age of 16. I would admit myself to hospital (the pain was excruciating) and every time i went i was told it was probably stress and to go home and rest. I was never offered an ultrasound scan and nothing abnormal was picked up in my blood. After two years of this, i eventually got admitted to hospital and was offered an ultrasound after a particularly nasty episode where the pain made me pass out. I was told the ultrasound had picked up images of multiple cysts in both ovaries, but unfortunately one of these "corpus Luteum" cysts had gotten so big (nearly and 1.5inches) that it had ruptured and caused a lot of bleeding into the cavity around my stomach. The pain had been caused by the rupture and the blood irritating my abdomen. With PCOS, the cysts are normally small and plentiful, found on the outside of the ovary. Mine, however, are inside them. I have not had a lot of help or information, and doctors are not even sure if my right ovary will/is still working. In my case, the only symptom was the pain, i didn’t experience any weight gain or abnormal hair growth. I have since read up on PCOS and the information i have found states women suffering the condition (and a very high percentage of women do) also have fertility problems due to the irregularity of the release of the egg. Concieving is very "hit and miss". In my case, the age i become infertile may well be brought dramatically forward if my right ovary is not functioning. I have been advised if i want children, to do so sooner rather than later. I have not been offered any IVF treatment on the NHS and upon asking if i could was told i still have one definite working ovary, and provided i continually take the contraceptive pill (which will regulate my hormones) the cysts that still remain in my left ovary will not grow any bigger.

3 years later and i have not experienced any more pains and the pill keeps my periods regular...until today. i had a blast of pain on the left side of my lower tummy and am now terrified that i may have a rupture in my left ovary too. I’m seeing a doctor and am asking to be referred to a specialist so i can receive the information i need to make an informed decision concerning my fertility. I will post up anything i am told and hope this will be of some use, as i am also very very confused and the information i have been given has been basic at best.
