Just intrested to find out who is giving there babies water?

The hot weather doesnt make a difference. BM is a drink and food. It adapts. The foremilk is the 'drink'. They just take a small amount when they only need a drink. You definitely do not need to give water to a BF baby before 6 months unless you are weaning early then you can give cooled boiled water if you want to.

It depends who you are talking to. If you speak to someone with up to date BFing training ( a have done 2 lots this year ) they will tell you it's not necessary. HVs do not get training in BFing over the basics and it doesnt seem to get updated either.

There is no harm in giving babies cool boiled water. Many people do so to help with constipation for FF babies. But in hot weather do you want to be taking your boob out every 10 mins to ensure your baby is hydrated!

I dont give a flying fig about taking my boob out in the snow if necessary!

You need to calm yourself down!

I've been coming under pressure to give Aisling drinks of water in this weather and she's only only 11 weeks! :dohh: Have to say, I'm getting tired of people making out like I'm denying my baby by not giving her water when she's happy and thriving (if a bit grumpy!) and feeding fine in this weather :)

Well I dont give a toss what the weather's like when my baby wants a drink!!

A lot of people are doing the same to me, trying to push me to give him water and wont listen when I explain about foremilk.

He's doing lots of wet and dirty nappies so I'm not worried, I'm giving him cool baths and having a fan pointed over him to cool the air around him, he's fine!

Feel like shouting at people "I AM NOT DENYING MY CHILD DONT WORRY!!"

And maybe you need to stop giving advice out that you know nothing about:dohh:. You have no experience with breastfeeding advisory nor have you done the breastfeeding councilling couse as Mervs Mum (and I) have.

You are wrong, wrong, wrong in this particular case I'm afraid and what Mervs Mum has posted is completely accurate. Breastfed babies need no other liquid apart from breastmilk as it adapts from a drink at 1st to "food" after the initial thirstquenching drink. Think magic gobstopper from Willy Wonka's:rofl:

Breastfeeding meets all your baby's needs. Give breast milk only, avoiding soothers and supplementary bottles. Bottles and soothers can cause breastfeeding problems. Healthy breastfed babies do not need bottles of water or formula. The less often your baby nurses, because he is meeting some of his sucking needs with a soother or because he is full from a bottle, the less breast milk you will make. The more formula he gets one day, the less milk your body will make the following day. Studies have shown that when breastfed babies are given supplementary bottles in the early days they loose more weight and become more jaundiced than babies who get colostrum alone.

I offer Brenn water sometimes he will drink a lot but others he won't . We also live in a very hot climate. It has been over 100 almost every day of June. If we are out and about, I try to make sure he has water. But he is also older than a lot of other babies.

I can't believe how misinformed a few people are! I don't blame Lisa for getting her heckles up, I feel the same. It drives me bonkers when people dish out advice that is either irrelevant to the topic or out and out WRONG.

Jack has been thirsty in this heat and feeding more often, but certainly NOT every ten minutes, for goodness sake! But even if he did want feeding that often I wouldn't care, breast milk is all he needs and water can do more harm than good so I will continue to do what is best for him.

No one has suggested I give Jack water. My mum just asked at what age he could have it out of interest.

Here here....Erin has fed 4/5 times since 7am....much the same as a bottlefed baby, not exactly demanding or every 10mins:dohh:

yep same Fred just had 2 extra feeds yesterday as he seemed a bit unsettled so he had a little drink, so 7 feeds through the whole day including the two bottles he has xx

i seriously doubt you would need to give any baby, child or adult a drink every 10 mins whatever the heat?!!!!!

I have always been told B/F babies dont need water coz breast milk is a food and drink in one. Some advice ive been given that i should be giving my daughter who is nearly 7 months old water coz its hot weather because Boobie milk wont be enough and the fact she is over 6 months. Just wondered what other people have been doing?

As long as you are nursing your baby on demand there is absolutely no reason for her to need water. If you are going to be away from your baby then expressed breast milk is also all that's necessary. People assume BF babies need water because formula fed babies do....

I just offer Poppy water from her sippy cup with meals and occasionally, in this heat she will also have some later on in the day. But I also tend to offer her an additional breastfeed just to make sure she is getting plenty of fluid in her while it's so hot. Like she's ever going to refuse it :dohh:

I'd just like to add that I'm also getting pressure from various places (mum, mil, friends) to give her water! Why do people feel the need to try and tell you you are a bad mother for 'dehydrating' your child!

Sounds familar lol xx

OH keeps mentioning that I should give DS water. I think unless you understand how breastfeeding works, and breastmilk composition, it would seem like babies would need water in heat. After explaining to him how it all works, he hasn't mentioned it. I don't think we can expect 'normal' folk to know what to do, when a lot of trained people don't. My HV told me to give water, not just to keep him hydrated, but to fill him up so he goes longer between feeds!

Jacks a little older and has drinks of water during the day but saying that he still has his booby milk more in the hot weather and i dont care at all :D Lisa and Hevz are spot on with thier advice IMO. :D

I know that foremilk is the 'drink' bit of the feed but if a baby is having purely EBM how do you know they are getting enough foremilk to quench their thirst? as the foremilk is all mixed in with the rest of the milk in the bags.
