I had my doctors appointment today. The nurse said she found ketones in my urine. She did not seem that worried about it. She just asked me how I've been feeling lately and if I've been eating okay. I have been feeling fine and I've also been eating. I even gained 5 pounds in the last month! I don't know what is going on or how to make it better. Any suggestions?

first off sometimes we have a trace of this or that...so if your doctor really isnt concerned You shouldnt be....a trace doesnt really mean anything but if its more....

ketones occur in the absence of carbs, when your body starts to use fat for calories. You will see ketones when you are eating very low calorie, very low carb, or have impaired insulin function. Ketones are concentrated in a state of dehydration. Excess glucose in urine indicates eating too many carbs (if you're diabetic) and/or impaired insulin function. Both are hallmarked by sweet smelling urine. Make sure you eat small meals during the day and add a night time snack, with a protein, to prevent ketosis while sleeping. If you think you have diabetes see a physician.

General rule I go on, is if the doctors/nurses don't seem worried, then it's best not you worry either. If you want more information or not sure what something means, then ask them :) I recently got told I had leukozites (sp?) in my urine, despite the midwife not seeming worried, I asked her what it meant exactly, and felt at ease after it being explained to me. Don't stress if they don't look stressed :)

That's what i think as well, if they don't seem worried then don't stress about it :) You're in good hands!

I had Ketones in my urine once, just because I hadn't eaten lunch yet! Got told to go eat!
