Have had a really difficult night so far and its only 3am!

LO was really hungry this evening after his last feed. He was rooting manicly only about 90 minutes after his nighttime feed. I had problems BF-ing in the hospital but after speaking it over with my MW this morning, she said that I should give BF a go today if I was so inclined. Since we were in bed and he was hungry, I thought I would try. He took to it well but I couldn't provide enough to feed him completely, so had to make up a little bit of formula. Problem is I think I waaaay overestimated how long the water was in the kettle. I thought it was half an hour, but on reflection, it was more like an hour. Shit. Is this really, really bad? Will I make him sick?!!

He has literally only just settled from hours of crying, but I'm too scared to go asleep in case I've made him sick and won't hear him in the middle of the night...

:hugs:

I dont think you need to worry, it needs time to cool anyway. 1 hour isnt that long.

I leave my kettle many hours at a time (often up to about 6 hours), I BF but give gaviscon mixed with water for reflux 6x a day. Holly has never gotten ill from it. Its not like the milk itself which has many bacterias in which can breed if left at room temperature, once sterile, ie boiled, it should be good for quite some time.

Hopefully by now youve had some good sleep!!

if you gave the feed straightaway, it's probably fine. the temp of the water kills any bacteria in the (non-sterile) powder but if it's not sitting around at all once made up there'd be no time for anything left to multiply to any sort of dangerous levels.

plenty of mums make up their bottles with boiled room temperature water and I haven't read that any have said that they've made their LO sick! the instructions are very much precautionary measures on behalf of the formula companies.

Theres way too many ways of doing bottles. Exact temps of water, how long are bottles sterile for, dont store them pre made etc. I stored my 2 sons milk in the fridge made up for the day (no longer than 24 hours) as this was the recommendation then (4 years ago) and he was never sick a day in his life so im confused as to why now if i did that i wud be chastised from the health visitor! I sterilise my bottles then put cooled boiled water in them for the day and store them at room temp. I then heat them as i need them before adding the milk. I find this is quick and easy (its not the water that goes off or anything its the water should be warm to kill poossible bacteria in the milk but i read this is only a risk to baby in the first couple of weeks). Lets face it they arent gonna sell milk thats gonna hurt babies. I think they are more at risk if u dont wash ur hands, or the bottles correctly in the first place as that wud introduce more germs.

I fill up bottles before bed with water and use them when needed its been boiled its fine. My formula even says room temp water so i wouldnt worry about it

i would totally not wqorry about it all all hun, at the end of the day it is boiled water x

Thank you - I think I had second day nerves and panic-ed :)

FF is soooo confusing. I didn't think it was supposed to be so hard!
