Who used gas and air as their method of pain reduction in labour?

I was looking at this (I'm definitely against epidurals) and would just like to know how well it worked out

I had a spinal block but I've heard of many people who only had gas so it seemed to work for them?

I used gas and air and I bloody loved the stuff! Got me as high as a kite when I first started puffing on it :haha: Towards the end though I obviously wasn't still laughing lol but had dome more for my stitches and started giggling again! :haha: it doesn't take away all of the pain but it sure does help!

I only used gas and air and to be honest I didn't think it helped much with the pain, everybody is different though. It made me feel drunk between contractions, so that in a way helped because it kept me calm (not meaning I get drunk to be calm! :haha:) which was a help. It was also something to focus on doing, so to begin with it took your mind off the pain a little bit.. I'd have it again. At the hospital here there are no epidurals, just gas and air or a pethidine injection so you don't have many options!

i was in labour for almost 4 days and spent it all in hospital, i used a little gas and air and it was horrible i felt so out of it, and it didnt help with the pain so i tried pethedine which didnt work, i ended up having an epidural an hour before i started pushing which was amazing  but the rest of the time walking round listening to music and going on facebook kept me entertained and kept my mind off the pain

I'm really good with pain so I had just gas and air, and honestly it's not really pain relief it more just distracts you from it for a little. It's good to bite it when you have a really bad contraction :haha:

At one point I refused it but the midwife told me just to take it because it's a distraction

I opted for gas and air and a water birth, but i was in so much pain when i was in labour i didnt even think to ask for the gas and air, or the water!!! i couldnt concentrate, all i remember doing was begging for the epidural! i did get morphine though, it didnt do a bloody thing! it just made me more worn out and tired it didnt take ANY pain away! x

Everybody seems to be completely different when it comes to labour pain relief.

I know a lot of women who said that gas and air was fine for them and they didn't need anything else.

I, however, found that it did nothing for the pain. But I didn't get to hospital until half hour after my waters broke and I was already 8cm so I was already in so much pain so I think the gas and air may have been good for me in early labour, I have also heard that with the gas and air you have to get the 'hang of it' for it to really work and since I was already so far along I was puffing away on it, probably not doing it how you're supposed to!

After going through most of my labour with no pain relief, I know for sure that I want an epidural next time, very early on! Unlike some, I feel as though being in so much agony worsened the experience for me. Definitely go to hospital with an open mind about pain relief etc. to avoid any disappointment and you will be fine. But, as I was saying, a lot of girls seem to say gas and air was enough so it seems to work for a lot. xx

I had a bit of g&a, i hated it, it gave me pins and needles everywhere, i ended up throwing it at the midwife because it was so crap :haha: getting my mum in a headlock was apparently my most effective mode of pain relief

Thanks :) yeah I read you had to do it right at the beginning of each contraction for it to have a noticeable difference on the pain :) x

I used gas and air and loved it. I was high as a kite :haha:

i had gas and air for the last 6 hours. it didn't make me high or giggly and didn't really take the pain away, it took the edge off. It worked more for me as a distraction really x

I had it for about 15 hours, it was pretty good! Makes you dosey so you don't pay attention to the pain, I also had two shots of morphine and and epidural which didn't work.. I'm sure they gave it at 6cm :dohh:
