Sorry I tried my best to be brief but it seems impossible! lol...
I funnily enough posted on here on Thursday 16th Feb (at 8 days overdue) in the evening saying how I was a bit fed up, little did I know I would be in labour a few hours later! 16th Feb is my OH's birthday and we had said how nice it would be if baby was born on his birthday, well just gone midnight so just missing the boat my waters spontaneously ruptured in bed! I'd been a bit uncomfortable that night, I kept needing a wee but that was pretty normal for me, but apart from that nothing really. No contractions that I was aware of. I was just laying there and felt a pop and then water. For a brief moment I thought I'd wet myself lol. I woke up my OH and said I think my waters have broken, he was really sleepy and confused lol. I stood up and water poured down my legs and was like... yeah they've definitely broken! I got a bit panicky and scared but phoned the hospital, they told me to come in to be assessed but warned me I might be sent home as I wasn't having contractions. I phaffed around for a bit but during this time I started getting mild contractions. On the way to hospital I was trying to time them roughly, and I was surprised because they seemed really quick, I kept saying I'm sure it's been less than 10 mins? less than 5 mins? they weren't too bad at this point. Like a bad period pain.
Got to hospital was very uncomfortable, They put me on a monitor to check baby was ok and she was, if a little sleepy. I asked to go to the loo as I had tummy pains, midwife said that was normal. When I was in the toilet it must have got bad as I was struggling to get up and had a bit of a cry lol. I had been trying to put on a front for the midwife as I didn't want her to think I was a pansy haha. But when I got back I started crying and she asked if I'd like some gas&air ... to which I said yes please lol. She also checked how dialated I was... 3cm!
Gas&Air I have to say didn't do too much for me, just made me feel a bit drunk between contractions. It probably did help but I probably don't cope with pain very well at the best of times, and my contractions came on so quick and strong I think I kept panicking every time I got one. The g&a also made me throw up all my dinner, poor OH had to hold about 3 sick bowls for me lol. It was a relief to be sick though and took my mind off contractions for a minute! lol
I asked for an epidural and they said I had to have a blood test done, so I asked for pethadine in the mean time even though I had previously said I didn't want it, I had no idea how long the results would take to come back and the gas&air wasn't enough. Pethadine again just made me feel drowsy, sleepy and drunk. Still in pain but falling asleep between contractions.
I have to say it did help me relax for the epidural though. I barely remember signing the consent form, I was falling asleep as they put it in. So it was worth it for that.
Then the epidural was great, I'd highly recommend one! I felt normal after that. Just had to wait to dialate. I was 10+1 by about 8am. They gave me an hour to start feeling the need to push. I didn't really feel much except pressure in my bum. So they didn't top up my epidural and put a drip in to elongate my contractions. This was when I got a bit upset. I had to start trying to push but didn't really know what I was doing, but it was hurting so I didn't want to push to my full potential as I was worried I'd do some sort of damage I think. This is when I panicked and started saying I can't do it, please give me a caeserean, please get forceps (even though I said I really didn't want forceps!) to which the midwife stricty said NO lol. She had to be quite strict with me at this point. I kept shaking my head and saying I want to go home. lol. They topped up my epidural eventually as this plan clearly wasn't working! I was crying and in a bit of a state lol. Once that kicked in I started to push properly, was pushing for about an hour properly (and half an hour before that but not properly lol) it didn't seem that long at the time. Pushing the baby round the pubic bone was the hardest part of it all, it was tiring and painful, the epidural doesn't take all the pain away just your contractions. Then when they said they could see her head it was a massive incentive and I really tried hard after that.
My biggest fear pre-birth was the 'ring of fire', burning, crowing, tearing etc, and I have to say that was not really a big deal. I don't know if the epi affected that much but it was all pretty quick and by then I just didn't care anymore. I was surprised when she came out, and it was the biggest relief ever. They laid her on my tummy and she was all warm and slimy but she felt lovely! she didn't cry but her eyes were open and she was looking at me. I looked at my OH and he was wiping a tear away which I loved
he never cries. I didn't cry though because I was just so happy and relieved she had been born.
As soon as she was born the pain was gone, I was laughing and saying it doesn't hurt anymore! lol. I had a 1st degree tear but apparently it was long. She put some numbing stuff on there while she did the stitches so I didn't feel them, just a bit of pulling every now and again.
I had my little girl, Hollie, at 10.43am on Friday 17th February 2012, she weighed 6lbs 13oz, I was 9 days over due and my labour was about 10 and a half hours from start to finish
... I think my birth was quite positive so hope it doesn't put anyone off. I'm a complete wuss when it comes to pain and I would do it all again, I had a lot of pain relief but I don't regret that, it did the job and I still managed to deliver her naturally. So my advice would be if you are in pain don't be afraid to ask for pain relief and mention it early on. Noone will judge you! That's what it's there for.
