Hi

My baby is currently a footling breech and has practically no chance of turning by himself now due to being big and my placenta being anterior (his head is up against it so he's stuck) and i'm having an ECV on wednesday but if this fails i'll need a c-section so im trying to get as much info on it as possible. I have a few questions:

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section?

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?

- How long did you have to stay in hospital?

- What pain relief was you given?

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?

- What time of the day was your c-section at?

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?

- How long after was you up and about?

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?

sorry there's so many questions but i just want to get as much information as i can to make it a nicer experience as i am terrified of surgery!!

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section?
I was 37 weeks along
- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?
I took 4 body suits and 2 sleepers I didnt take diapers(nsppies)

- How long did you have to stay in hospital?
I stayed in the hospital 2 days
- What pain relief was you given?
I was given a 24 hour morphine shot during the section and a spinal tap before the surgery

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it
I think it was only about 30 minutes

- What time of the day was your c-section at?
153pm
- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?
no not really

- How long after was you up and about?
I had my section around 2pm and I was up that night moving
- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly? About an hour. YOu have to lay flat for a while and they slowly incline your bed... Takes about an hour

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section?
On due date. but mine was emergency CS

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?
All were offered by the hospital here. SO I didnt bother about clothes. I only had 2 of each for discharge day.

- How long did you have to stay in hospital?
4 nights but I left after the 3rd night

- What pain relief was you given?
I had an epidural. After the CS, at the hospital, all my medications were given through the drip. They gave me voltarin (sp?) to use at home when necessary.

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?
Between 20-30 mins, but my baby was in distress, this is why it took some time.

- What time of the day was your c-section at?
Mine was at midnight

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?
I was able to BF 30 mins after delivery, I held him & fed him 3 times in 8 hrs, but had feeding issues later as I didnt have milk & LO couldnt latch on. My mom changed his nappies when we were at the hospital, but once we went back home I didnt have problems with nappy change. I used to change sitting on my bed using a
changing mat.

- How long after was you up and about?
Immediately after leaving the hospital. But I felt pain, but it wasnt bad.

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?
When we went to recovery, so after around 45 mins.

The CS it self wasnt bad, & recovery went great. Good luck hun xx

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section?
29 weeks

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?
None, we had no idea she was coming! I ahven't even got round to buying my hospital bag let alone packing it!

- How long did you have to stay in hospital?
6 days

- What pain relief was you given?
Morphine pump for the first two days then ibruprofen and paracetamol.

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?
I think about 30 minutes

- What time of the day was your c-section at?
8pm

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?
Didn't have to as Abby was in NNICU. Just moving and coughing were hard enough though!

- How long after was you up and about?
About 3 days, but it was a full month before I was moving normally with no pain.

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?
About 24 hours til I saw her, 3 days til I got a cuddle

My situation is different as I had a premature birth. And my section was under general anaesthetic. But even allowing for that, some people recover much quicker than others.

How far gone were you when you had your c-section?

38+3 with Harrison, 38+1 with Dominic

How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?

I took about 6 sets of babygrows/vests - my children poo a lot! Think I also got dp to bring in a few extra ones as well. I took a whole packet of nappies with me.

How long did you have to stay in hospital?

I was in 2 nights each time

What pain relief was you given?

Both my sections were done with Spinal anaesethic, with Harrison they put a suppository in after numbing me, but they didnt do it with Dom. I think different aneathatisists have different ways of doing things.

How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?

With Harrison, I went to theatre at 9am and he was born at 9.44am. With Dom it took longer as I had a lot of scar tissue, I think I went down to theatre at 1.30pm and he was born at 2.36pm. With both boys I think I was in recovery for about an hour after my section just so they could make sure we were both completley ok

What time of the day was your c-section at?

Harrison was morning, Dom was afternoon. My hospital do sections 2 days a week. Monday - pm and Friday - am.

Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?

After having Harrison I felt really well and although I struggled for the first 24 hours or so, I managed ok. With Dom it was more sore, but I was able to pick him up after about the same amount of time.

How long after was you up and about?

I was kept in bed for the rest of the day after my surgery, but the next morning they removed my catheter and encouraged me to get out of bed. I didn't need telling twice, I don't like staying in bed! Dp came to the shower room with me and sat there just to make sure I didn't faint or anything!

How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly? With Harrison, they quickly dried and wrapped him then put him on my chest so I could see him. He was kept with me all the way through and in recovery he was put skin on skin with me :) With Dom they dried and wrapped him and put him next to my head - I couldnt see him very well and got neckache! They did skin on skin in recovery though.

- How long after was you up and about?
I was up at about 9am the next day (a nurse walked me to the bathroom and back)
- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?
Daniel was given to me in theatre. I held him the whole time they were sewing me up. (My hubby didn't come in with me, as he is hospital phobic. He stayed with me for my whole 24hr labour, I couldn't make him come into theatre with me. He would have feinted)

About 2 hours.

- What time of the day was your c-section at?
Very early morning. LO was born at 04:34am.

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?
Yes, as i had a spinal i wasn't allowed out of bed for 24hours after, the midwives / DH changed nappies and i was handed LO to breastfeed.

- How long after was you up and about?
24 hours.

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?
Held and fed her about 30mins after (once stitched up) she was then with me all the time next to the bed.

Hope this helps x

- How long after was you up and about? The next day

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly? Straight away

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section?
38+1. I had an elective section because my LO was breech too. They would not attempt an ECV as I had oligohydraminos (low fluid) and LO was stuck.
- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?
One pack of nappies (27), 6 vests and 6 sleepsuits.
- How long did you have to stay in hospital?
2 nights. Section was on Wednesday morning, and we were home on Friday afternoon.
- What pain relief was you given?
I had a spinal block for the section, and regular painkillers, diclofenic and morphine
- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?
About one hour, although it felt like minutes once LO had been born and I couldn't believe it was over so fast!
- What time of the day was your c-section at?
LO was born at 10:52am

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?
Yes for the first day because I was still numb and couldn't get out the bed because of the catheter etc.. But by the second day it was fine, just sore!
- How long after was you up and about?
The following morning, so about 20 hours after the section, I had a shower and was able to walk about.
- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?
Right away. Daddy held her next to me whilst I was stitched up so I could see her perfectly. Then I was able to hold her and feed her myself as soon as we got into recovery.

Good luck for your ECV! I can say that my section was such a positive experience, it was nothing like I imagined. I'm the type of person who is terrified of needles and surgery etc and *I had never been so scared in my life. I was devastated my LO was breech, but I loved it and recovered really quickly xxx

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section?
42+1

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?
4 vests, 4 sleepsuits and a pack of nappies. People had to go and get extra things for me as I hadn't planned to be in long.

- How long did you have to stay in hospital?
After the section I was in for 2 nights

- What pain relief was you given?
No idea during the section, but paracetamol after.

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?
I was rushed to theater around half 2 or quater to 3 and they tried forceps first then had a section and baby was born at 3:15pm so no longer than half an hour before getting her out and then another 30/45 mins to fix me up

- What time of the day was your c-section at?
LO was born at 3:15

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?
I was allowed to hold LO but not pick her up for the first night, but after that it was fine, you just get on with it

- How long after was you up and about?
I had my catheter removed at 6am the following morning and go straight up to go the toilet, but it was painful. A month later and I can still get tired and feel a bit painful from it

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?
I didnt hold her straight away as I was so drugged up, but in recovery I was given skin to skin and she was breast feeding within 2 hours

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section?
5 Day's before my due date - for some reason I can't remember how many weeks this was :dohh:

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?
3 vests, 3 sleepsuits, bag of newborn nappies.

- How long did you have to stay in hospital?
24 hours. Had my section on Saturday at 11 and was released on the Sunday at 11.

- What pain relief was you given?
Spinal then paracetamol and diclefenac - I had to take these for a week after too

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?
They took me down at 11, Poppy was born at 11.29 then took another 45mins to stitch me up and stuff.

- What time of the day was your c-section at?
11.29

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?
It was a bit difficult because of the cannula they they put into your hand so I asked for it to be taken out. Apart from that I thought it was fine

- How long after was you up and about?
I was up and about at 7pm as they took me for a shower so 6-7 hours later.

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?
My hubby held her while I was being stitched up then I held her and breastfed while I was being taken down to recovery.

To be honest I didn't find it a big deal, Poppy was an undiagnosed breech and I just went with the flow as long as baby arrived happy and healthy I was fine. My recovery was fine although I did develop a small infection (from swinging my legs to get off the bed) but try not to stress out too much x x

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section?
42+2

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?
I think I took 1 small pack of nappies, 3 vests, 3 babygrows - but I got my mum to bring some extras in after he was born

- How long did you have to stay in hospital?
I had been in 5 days beforehand (induction wouldn't start labour at all),
planned c-section (only planned the night before) was Weds morn and we went home Fri teatime - so 2.5 days afterwards

- What pain relief was you given?
Spinal for the op, only paracetamol afterwards, was not allowed anything else due to my blood pressure being too high, just had paracetamol to take home.

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?
Went down to recovery room to wait at 9am, got weighed and waited, walked to theatre down the corridor about 9.45am, loads pf people there, got introduced to everyone, had spinal done about 10, they then made sure it had worked, put sheet up so couldn't see down below, nurse put catheter in when I couldn't see or feel anything, started cutting about 10.35, DS born at 10.38 that part is sooo quick, DS was checked over, dressed by nurse, then given to DH. DS was held near my face but I wouldn't lie still as I wanted to touch him so they sent DS with DH down to recovery. Took about 40 mins to stitch me up and then wheeled me down to recovery to join them. Was over an hour before I could hold him after I had had some toast because I was shaking badly (common side effect of spinal)

- What time of the day was your c-section at?
As above I was first on the list in in the morning, he was born at 10.38. Another lady was there when I got there but I was given priority so she had to wait for me to be done first.

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?
All that day and night DH or midwives had to pass him to me to bf. I wasn't allowed to get out of bed and still had the catheter and drip attached. It was agony to turn over in bed that night, just tried to lie still. After the first night I was allowed up and down to pick him up to bf and change him and the pain got easier every day. Was back to normal in 2 weeks. I did rest a lot, spent that 2 weeks sat on the sofa.

- How long after was you up and about?
I did persuade them to let me transfer to a chair the same evening for an hour while I had visitors but it hurt a lot. I was just sick of being in bed. The next morning I had to beg them to remove my catheter as I was desperate for a shower, they removed it 24 hours after the op.

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?
Midwife and DH held him next to my face straight away as soon as he had been checked over, then sent him out to recovery and I joined them after 40 mins once stitched up, then once I was in a fit state I got to hold him but I had to demand him and wolf some toast down to prove I was okay, because I wanted to try and bf as soon as possible. The overwhelming feeling of love kicked in the minute I held him, not before. Until I held him it was all a bit dream like.

Good luck, planned c-sections are great, I would definitely want another one next time, I had wanted a home birth so had been looking forward to a natural birth and was so disappointed when I knew I was having a c-section but it was really brilliant in the end.

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section? 41 weeks and 1 day

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)? Around 10 nappies, 4 vests/bodysuits/sleepsuits etc. Any extra we needed OH would bring in and take the dirty ones home iykwim. We thought that be better that humphing a load of stuff in when we didnt know what we'd need

- How long did you have to stay in hospital? I was in thursday morning til sunday night but requested to leave so should have been monday

- What pain relief was you given? lots  The pain relief is very good and managed so that you are constantly under some kind of pain relief. Like I was given paracetamol (which you can only take every 4 hours) so inbetween times I was given diclofenic (think thats what its called)

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it? all in, around 20 mins - flys in! baby was with us in about 3 mins.

- What time of the day was your c-section at? Just before 11 am

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them? Yes. I will be honest, this was for me worse than the physical pain. Hearing bubbi cry and not be able to get to him but thats what the midwives are there for and you are allowed your partner or mum in with you from morning till night (was from 9am til 9pm in my hospital). I just buzzed the MW's straight away if Adam stirred and they'd come and hand Adam over to me. The next day once the catheter was out, I could get out of bed although it took a while to get up, once your up your fine. Changing was fine, again, once your on your feet things are a lot easier.

- How long after was you up and about? I stayed in bed till the following day, I think thats standard as you will be fitted with a catheter. The more you get up the easier it gets

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly? I saw him straight away and could hold him straight away too although you feel a tad funny at first from the spinal. Your arms work fine. I just made sure I fullly supported him with my arms and didnt rest him on my tummy. Which resulted in achy arms after a while seen as he was 9lb 13! Wee chubber.

If you have any question feel free to pm me. It can be daunting but try not to worry yourself too much :hugs::hugs:

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section? I was 39+5

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)? I just took a couple outfits. The hospital supplied everything else.

- How long did you have to stay in hospital? 3 days

- What pain relief was you given? During the procedure they gave me Morphone, but not sure what they gave afterwards. I didn't need pain medication once I got home. I think I may have taken tylenol once.

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it? I believe I was in there a total of 25 minutes

- What time of the day was your c-section at? My c-section was scheduled for noon, but they weren't able to get to me until 1pm.

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them? The first day was really tough. By the 3rd day things got a little easier.

- How long after was you up and about? My surgery was at 1pm and the next morning around 8am I was up and took a shower. Later that evening I was walking up and down the hallways of the hospital.

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly? I actually wasn't able to hold LO until an hour after my surgery because I was so shaky. The morphine and spinal made me really shaky and cold feeling. The next day I felt much better and was able to cuddle with him properly.

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section?39+1

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?I took 1 packet of nappies that had 27 in it,i brought 3 vest,3 babygrows but I needed more so had to get OH to bring some to the hospital. So maybe you should pack abit more babygrows etc.

- How long did you have to stay in hospital?I stayed in 2 days

- What pain relief was you given?I had a spinal block for the section and diclofenic, paracetemol and morphine

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?45 mins but only took about 5 to get LO out.

- What time of the day was your c-section at?5.00pm(I was the last on the list!)Boo lol.

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?Yeah I found it very hard.I could barely move for the first few days but it does get easyier.

- How long after was you up and about?About 12 hours, which they made me have a shower.I could barely walk.I was in agnoy and was walking like a snail but they encourage you to try and get up and walk.

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?Straight after it,it was the most amazing feeling in the whole
world.

Good luck with everything hun and hope that has helped you :) xxx

- How far gone were you when you had your c-section?

42+1. Emergency section as LO has a heart rate of nearly 200.

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?

1 vest, 1 baby grow, 1 packet of nappies. I had a very small bag as the plan was to deliver at home and i put very little effort into my hospital bag.

- How long did you have to stay in hospital?

4 days. I could hae gone home at 3 days but feeding wasn't established.

- What pain relief was you given?

I had an epidural within an hour of transfer to hospital, which was topped up when I had the section. Post operatively I had paracetamol, diclofenac and codeine.

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?

About 45mins?

- What time of the day was your c-section at?

Abigail was born at 00:45.

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?

I found it hard to get her out of the cot. I didn't change her until she was about 3 days old and missed all her meconion poo. I found it difficult to get a good position to feed her and ended up getting a U shaped nursing pillow which was vital.

- How long after was you up and about?

Out of bed the next day and walking to the toilet. Within a week was able to walk 20mins into town but felt crap afterwards.

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?

I asked for skin to skin. And I saw her as soon as she was born. Unfortunately I couldn't hold her as they had positioned the screen too high up my body. My mum held her for the time they stitched me up and was right next to me.

How far gone were you when you had your c-section?
34+6. Was induced due to a bleed and baby got distressed etc so needed an emergency section

- How many of each item for baby did you take (eg nappies, vests etc)?
I had nothing with me at all as came in with a bleed and didnt expect baby for 6 weeks. Ended up with loads as was in hospital for over a week.

- How long did you have to stay in hospital?
1 week. Mainly due to Lucas in SCBU though not as I struggled with recovery.

- What pain relief was you given?
In labour, G+A, morphine, Spinal for the c section and a pain relief suppository. Recovery was given injections of morphine at beginning (my request as low pain threshold it turned out), mainly diclofenac and paracetamol 2 days after the op.

- How long did the operation take from entering theatre to leaving it?
About 45 mins. Dont look up at the theatre lights though!

- What time of the day was your c-section at?
4:40am

- Did you struggle with picking up baby and changing their nappy/feeding them?
He was in SCBU for 5 days. They brought him to me as soon as I was stitched up and back on ward and he managed to breastfeed. Then didnt take enough and sugars dropped so was tube fed. I struggled for first 2 days, then slowly got easier.

- How long after was you up and about?
Got me up the morning after. I'll be honest I was scared to death as I thought if I stood up I'd split in two! Felt so much better for it though. Stiff and a bit woozy but slowly got easier. Up and about with ease was about 4-5 days after. Everyone's pain threshold is subjective though.

- How long after the surgery was you able to hold your baby and see them properly?
