I posted this in the 2nd trimester forum but so far no one has heard of it! Just wondered if anyone over here may have, thank you!

I had my 20 week scan yesterday and the u/s lady said I have 20% placental lakes and has advised I need to go back for another scan at 28 weeks to check on the babys growth as if they are worried I would have to have another scan at 32 weeks and perhaps early delivery!

Has anyone else had this? I have looked on line and all it tells me is that they are fairly common so they dont usually mention them, which leads me to believe they must be worried to insist on another scan.

I have an appointment with my midwife on Monday but would love to hear from anyone who has had the same thing!

Thanks! xx

I have no idea sweetie. I didnt want to read and run. Im suprised that they did not explain what this meant??? Hope someone can give you an answer.:hugs:

Hi hun. Don't have any advice I'm afraid.

I've not been through it or heard of it? Didn't want to read and run though :hugs:

Thank you girls, the u/s lady was really useless! I asked if there was something I could do to give the baby more nutrition and she said she didnt think so and just to speak to my midwife so I now have the agonising wait until Monday! xxx

Im suprised they didnt get someone to speak to you to tell you about it, or explain it more themselves. I have never heard of this so cant offer any help im afraid. Hope you find out what it is soon.

lakes are dark areas on the scan arent they. I am sure thats how they described my placental abruption with my son, there were lakes of blood basically that they kept an eye on to make sure they healed and didnt affect babies growth. I believe its active areas of bleeding. At my 28 week scan the lakes were much better and by 36 weeks they were gone.

Hi hun,
I had placental lakes which were really obvious and quite large on my 20week scan (if you want to add me as a friend on facebook you can see my scan pic on there and see them, pm if you want to)....they didnt seem too concerned at the time and I had a scan at 33 weeks and they didnt mention them. I also have low amniotic fluid and my bubs is growing well so i wouldnt worry...sounds like a bit of a useless sonographer whose caused you worry by not having a great deal of knowledge about them xxx

i dont have any advice sorry, but if you are worried dont wait until monday call your community midwife office and get your midwiffe to call you, nothing worse than having to sit and worry. she can put your mind at ease and tell you honestly what they are xxx

I haven't a clue, but i think some ladies here may have helped a wee bit, but i'd be inclined to phone the hospital up r your mw and get them to explain.

Hugs

yes I had them with my DD2..they were spotted at 12 weeks and 20 weeks..the sonographer just casually said I had some placental lakes and never elaborated..it wasnt mentioned on further scans..DD2 was born at 38 weeks weighing 8lb 3...
when I reasearched it, the description was areas of maternal blood in the placenta..but when I had them no one seemed particularly worried

i have heaps of them in my placenta. the sonographer wasn't worried at all she told me this is normal
