Hi,
My little cutie pie Andrew was born at 08:58 on Saturday 14th April. He was breech and I had been in for an ECV to manually turn him on Thursday 12th. The ECV didn't work as his bottom was firmly wedged in my pelvis. I was admitted to hospital for the night due to some diabetes related problems but was discharged on the Friday with an appointment to return on the Saturday morning to book a date for my elective c-section. They said to go straight back if my waters broke or my braxton hicks became regular and painful.
As I'm diabetic we were always going to be induced so we never imagined we'd do the middle of the night dash to the hospital. It was therefore a bit surreal when my membranes ruptured in the early hours of Saturday morning and contractions started. We live an hour or so from the hospital but given we were driving at 4am we made it in 50 mins. Good job too as by the time we got to the labour ward I was really starting to feel like I was in labour.
Lots of other ladies were too that night and we ended up spending over 3 hours in a triage room as there were no labour rooms free. They were also doing back to back emergency c-sections. The night team left at 7am handing over to the day team. I was first on the list for the c-section and that couldn't come fast enough for me. I had a trace on baby's heartrate and only gas and air to help the pain as I couldn't move around.
Needless to say the epidural was most welcome even though I was apprehensive about the whole procedure. There weren't as many people in theatre as I was expecting - somewhere between 6 and 10 people I think. We decided not to have the screen lowered as Andrew was born as DH is squeamish so we didn't see him until the second APGAR test had been done (the results of both were good - 9 and 10). By then he was beautifully pink and looking gorgeous. After spending some time with him, DH then went off with him to recovery while they stitched me up. He had some skin to skin time until I was wheeled through.
We were kept in hospital until early evening on Tuesday by which time I was climbing the walls. We had a few hairy moments over those few days as Andrew's sugar levels kept dropping - often a problem when the mother is diabetic - and he spent his first night in SCBU. We're having to top up my breast milk with formula to make sure he's keeping his levels up but we're starting to wean that out now that my milk's coming in.
On the whole the experience was a good one although we were very frustrated with some of the conflicting messages from the midwives and one or two of them could do with improving their bedside manner as they were very brusque.
Home now and starting life as a family. I'll put a couple of pics up once they're on my laptop.
